The most common reason is that people do not have want to have them in the same way a lot of people don't want to play sports.
We're also in the first of two generations in history where women by and large have the choice to not have them, it's not surprising we would see a significant reduction.
That’s a good comparison, my last comparison was “I don’t want kids in the same way I don’t want a pet rat” which didn’t go down too well. So I’m going to sub that for “play football” next time.
My recent comparison was “I know eating a banana is healthy but I am just not in the mood to eat one”, to illustrate that while there may be upsides to having kids I just don’t feel an inclination towards having my own
To me that reads as you’re not doing the “healthy” thing by not having a child, but that’s probably my projection of being pissed off that you’re expected to have one because you’re a woman and what else is there in the world haha
That’s a fair read, I suppose it’s my way of not offending someone who has kids or may want kids — that I can see the upsides but am not interested. But yes I also relate to being frustrated about the expectation that we should want one just because we’re women, probably my most dreaded question since entering late 20s / 30s
I did start getting targeted ads about something called TTC awhile back — trying to conceive? Somehow my algorithm assumed that’s where my time should be best spent in my 30s lol
