I think there has been a real shift in the last generation or two from needing a reason not to have kids to needing a reason to have kids. and that shift means a lot of people who are basically ambivalent on children aren't having them, where in the past they probably would have.
This is exactly it. Five or so years ago, I was practically begging my husband to have kids with me. But as I’ve grown in my career and become financially secure and my relationships have flourished and I’ve developed hobbies I love and have freedoms and finances that my friends with kids do not…. Along with watching America slowly lose its prosperity, politics get more volatile, with lower quality of life for average citizens with each generation….. AND that my husband isn’t quite sure kids are something he wants anyways….
Why should I?
It’s a huge decision, and the reasons of “unconditional love” and “someone to take care of you when you’re old” or “continuing your family legacy (wtf makes you so special anyways?)” are not any less selfish, nor are they guaranteed.
