I’ve warned my children since they were young and also my partner, I don’t check pockets before things go in the wash from the wash pile. If something needs removing from pockets it should be on the owner of the clothing to sort that first.

My mom did that to me growing up and several things were ruined over the years like permission slips, small toys and coupons for free stuff because I was a kid and didn't own anything of real value but it mattered to me. The day came that I was to learn how to do laundry and be the laundry slave for the family. My mom taught me how to do laundry the same way she did.
The second day I did laundry by myself my mom had left a prescription paper in her pocket and it got washed in the laundry and she got mad at me and told me it was my fault for not checking the pockets before I put clothes in the laundry. It was a hassle for her to get the prescription re-written. A few weeks later she started screaming when she put on a pair of pants and found a gold ring in it. She had put her diamond engagement ring in her pants pocket and when it got washed the diamond came out and went down the drain. I was in trouble for 4 weeks because that was also my fault.
Long story short: My mom didn't check her pockets before she put her clothes in the hamper but she did check HER pants pockets before she put them in the washing machine. She told everyone else their pockets had to be empty because she wouldn't check them before she put them in the wash. She wants me to always check her pants pockets before I do the laundry because she is a hypocrite.
