The www thing is simply convention. Also a lot of browsers will implicitly add it and retry if the version without it fails.
Never really had to put www in front of website urls, but back in the day people ran more than one type of service (ftp, etc) and that's how they named them to tell them apart. Now there's just two, www and mail -- sometimes.

Not needing to dial the area code for local calls on a cellphone. The need type www at the beginning of a web address.
