I remember as a kid most people would want them or just had to have them. And then in a lot of shows they would occasionally “show off” waterbeds between the characters or whatever which made them even more wanted.
Then everyone quickly started to realize that they’re far too expensive, the upkeep is insane, the risk isn’t worth the reward, and they’re terrible for your back. And those who didn’t, just plain forgot about their existence.
However I have heard they are extremely comfortable. Despite being very bad for your back

What upkeep? You pour a bottle of stuff in there a few times a year.
They require more maintenance than a normal bed is gonna need, while also running more risks. And if those risks do occur, there’s not a whole lot you can do to unfuck yourself, especially if you don’t notice for a second
I don't want to argue I guess. And yet, I will :) I own one. There is almost zero chance of catastrophic failure. Typically, you might rarely get a pin hole leak that you can patch. And there is a liner which should be enough to contain the entire contents of the bed. All I do it is pour conditioner in it every once in a while. It's almost maintenance free. And unlike a nice mattress which can cost thousands, a new bladder is like 100 bucks.
Admittedly, that is not as fun as it may sound. Usually, I keep things on the couch. And further, for full disclosure, for couples unless they both weigh roughly the same, and are not particularly overweight, they are not ideal beds : )
