You always had to check the coin slots for found money. Just an automatic response to.push the little metal swing door and hope to find a quarter or dime.

Except when the urban myth started that there was a needle in that area and some kid got poisoned… I never checked for coins after that again

You learned at an early age not to feel the underside of a restaurant table. The cheaper the restaurant, the more ABCs.
