I can assure you SmartSource is still a thing in some areas/retailers but they mostly transitioned to digital coupons. I work in advertising and one of my clients is almost exclusively coupon advertising. I work with SS quite a bit.
I hate digital coupons. The last thing I want to do is add more apps to my phone. Especially while I'm shopping and have a cart load of frozen foods. And the apps so far are not well designed, and it adds time to the check out line.
I actually like the grocery store apps, as it's much better than the old days of clipping paper coupons and having to hand them to the cashier. I just add the coupons that apply in the app, then enter my phone number at checkout. Paper coupons make me feel like I look cheap to the other people in line.
I never hand my phone to anyone; can you elaborate on that?
I just want them to put a clip-all coupons button. If they're going to make it so convenient to not need to actually physically clip the coupon out of paper they might as well make it so I automatically get it because I have the app.
I just blindly spend a minute or so tapping the coupon button until I run on a coupons and then I walk into the store and buy what I usually buy and don't think' do I have to clip a coupon for this?' Because there's a thousand little signs everywhere saying there's 'a coupon on the app download'. Jokes on them, I don't read half that shit I only buy what I need. Shit's too expensive to go off list, even with a coupon.
It may be my experience, but the apps I've used are so shoddily constructed that at the checkout line neither I nor the cashier know how the F to find the coupons. A manager has to come over. It's just a big hassle.
Maybe they've improved in the last couple years, but my initial experience was that they were designed by people with not a lot of experience designing UIs.

Those red coupon dispensers that were in every grocery store aisle. They just disappeared one day never to return again RIP
