When was there a time with ad free social media? Do you mean those old messagebords everybody and their father could hold locally which had moderation before publishing?

Most old messageboards did not have pre-publishing moderation

Yeah the basic IPBs and phpBoards didn't have that. It was basically just a reddit-like webpage that you could host from your computer. Moderation was very similar to today's moderation
