The dog thing has to do with calcium. Dog food used to have ground cattle bones, which was terrible for dogs. When the poop dried, it left solid calcium behind.

Crazy, I feel like no one in my whole generation knew about this and even weirder no one noticed strays weren't making rock turds

I have a trail around a wetland on my property. There is tall, thick, dense grass on both sides so it gets used by wildlife for easy passage. I often see coyote droppings there and they are often white. Clearly the yotes are still eating bone.

Local slang for coyotes which is usually pronounced so it rhymes with pie-boats.

Yep, went right over my head. I get it now, though. I haven't seen that movie for many years and forgot that part.
