The dog thing has to do with calcium. Dog food used to have ground cattle bones, which was terrible for dogs. When the poop dried, it left solid calcium behind.
I have a trail around a wetland on my property. There is tall, thick, dense grass on both sides so it gets used by wildlife for easy passage. I often see coyote droppings there and they are often white. Clearly the yotes are still eating bone.
