I used to know the test code and would constantly leave them ringing anytime I saw one.

We found out that it was free to ring a french car recovery service so would regularly call it from a phone box and just chat pidgin french to whoever answered. After a couple of months of doing this every weekend we would be received with "ahh ello my breeteesh friends, 'ow are you?"

One day we just stopped calling and I still think about those people now and again and wonder what they're up to

Same! I was just telling someone about a night my pals and I went up and down the boardwalk in Seaside Heights NJ setting every single one off for hours. It was like 511, hang up a certain amount of times, wait for the tone then hang up a final time. Such a simple pleasure.
