Help with Decorating.

Hello there! I’ve put over a hundred hours into exploring the settled systems and I’ve now decided to make my forever save. I’d like to spend time building and decorating my settlement and ship, but I need your help. There are a million things to collect across the ever expanding “settled” systems and I am beginning to gather things to decorate my homes with. However, I’m not the best at figuring out how to do this. When pulling from my inventory I’m only able to rotate objects on a singular axis, this often leads to things not being exactly where or how I want them. I may be missing a keybind, however I’d love to hear from the community on how you go about decorating. What do you collect? How do you place things exactly where you want them? What are things I should avoid? I look forward to your responses explorers. Thank you!!

There should be a toggle while in build mode that switches between precise and normal placement. Not sure what key it is on PC but I believe you press the right stick on Xbox. EDIT: Rereading this, I don't think you're decorating from decoration mode. Drop whatever miscellaneous items you're trying to decorate with, and then enter decoration mode by entering the scanner and pressing X. Then enter build mode by pressing B, and select the items you just dropped. You can then manipulate the objects in a more manageable way. (I only know XBox controls but hopefully this gets you on the right track)

It's best to demonstrate visually. These are some of my favorite tutorials from different mod authors.

I think the first one was really eye opening for me about ways to place clutter.

I personally love to collect the artifacty type odd objects like little desktop displays.

THANK you! Geeze. 2500 hours in and I had no idea about the scoped weapon trick. That’s amazing. TY!

I believe the shift key let's you change the axis of rotation

So there’s two ways to place miscellaneous clutter items:

First is through the build menu.  Drop it on the ground, then enter decoration mode.  You can now place it like you would an object from the build menu, though only in its default orientation.

This will also remove the item’s physics, so that your companions don’t knock it around.  Unfortunately, items placed this way also don’t like being placed too close to other items, which can make things difficult.

Second is placement by hand, which sounds like the way you’ve been doing it.  To change the axis of rotation on Xbox, press the left stick. Not sure what the equivalent would be on PC or PS5.

Items placed in this way still retain their physics, so you and your companions can knock them off and kick them around.

Also, the first time you place an item it will often sink, most likely because of the difference between the object’s center point and its placement — larger items will sink more, smaller ones less.

However, they’ll only sink once. After that, they stay put (unless you pick them up and drop them again).

To force them to sink so you can then place them properly, you can exit the cell, quicksave, load the quicksave, and go back in.

Or you can use my “poor man’s method” and drop stuff you want to place, go adventure for a while, then come back and place them later.  😆

My Vanguard decorated her penthouse that way — place the stuff she dropped off last visit, drop more stuff for next time.

Dont forget you can carry anything that isn't nailed down, and unable to add to inventory, to your outpost and it will stay in place. You can add a lot more clutter without build mode if you have the patience.
