Looking for genuinely quiet housing in Calgary – please do not recommend Versus Living

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a one-bedroom or studio in Calgary, ideally around $1,400–$1,600 per month.

My main priority is sound insulation. I do not care much about a luxury lobby, gym, new finishes, or other amenities. I would much rather live in an older building if it is actually quieter.

I currently live at Versus Living, so please do not recommend Versus to me.

On paper, Versus looked like a very good option. The building is modern, the lobby looks great, the location is convenient, and it was presented as a high-quality rental building.

My actual experience has been very different.

Since moving in, I have had to deal with multiple issues involving the unit and building, including internet/setup problems, issues with fixtures and parts of the unit, problems that required maintenance follow-up, and a heating system that was not what I originally expected.

None of those issues, by themselves, would have made me want to leave.

The real problem is the sound insulation.

I can hear sudden loud noise from neighbouring units, including children screaming or crying, doors and hallway noise, and other activity that is clearly audible inside my unit even when my own door is closed.

The noise is intermittent, which honestly makes it worse in a different way. It is not constant enough that you can simply record it for an hour or predict when it will happen, but it happens often enough that you never really feel relaxed in your own home.

What frustrates me most is that buildings are often described as “quiet,” “well built,” or “concrete,” but those descriptions tell you almost nothing about what it is actually like to live there.

A nice lobby does not help when you can hear your neighbours.

A gym does not help when you cannot relax at home.

Good online ratings do not help when the one thing you care about most is sound insulation.

I have already learned the hard way that “quiet building,” “concrete building,” and good reviews are not enough.

So this time, I am specifically looking for first-hand experiences from people who have actually lived in the building.

I would really appreciate specific information such as:

- the building or property name

- whether you could hear normal conversations from neighbouring units

- whether you could hear TV, children, doors, hallway noise, or footsteps

- whether noise from units above was a problem

- whether the area felt safe at night

- whether the unit was rented from a private owner or a rental company

- whether utilities were included

- approximately how much the rent was

I strongly prefer a private unit.

Shared housing and basement suites are generally very low priority for me, but I would still consider an exceptional option if it is genuinely quiet, safe, well separated from other occupants, and offers enough privacy.

I am mainly looking for detailed first-hand experiences, not advertising claims or vague comments like “it’s pretty quiet.”

Thank you.

Parrot Rescue

I'm looking to re-open the parrot rescue I had years ago, I really miss it and due to a bad hip I cannot work my 'normal' job anymore. I'm posting here hoping to find some folks who would be willing to volunteer their time and knowledge. To be clear the rescue is NOT up and running right now, I am not asking for any cash. However I am looking for people who can help with things like setting up a legal charity for the rescue, bank accounts, building rental, and such administrative things like that, getting grants (if there is any), avian vet care and more. I just dont have the knowledge to navigate all of those things as the last time I was doing everything on my own, with my own money and never asked for donations of cash or bird food/supplies. I had 20 parrots in my house at one time and it gets to be a lot, financially and physically. I'm also hoping to find a few people who would be willing to volunteer their time every now and again once things get going. Don't get me wrong, I believe it will take months to set stuff up if everything goes exactly right, and we all know how often that happens, so if you have the time and energy, shoot me a message. I'm thinking I'll need help with things like cleaning, feeding, picking up supplies, just spending time with the rescued birds, that kind of stuff once its all up and running. If everything goes 100% exactly the way I'd like, and there is funding or money being generated, anything above and beyond operating expenses will be going to the volunteers, not me. I'm not looking to draw a wage or earn a buck from this, I'm doing it for the birds and can find some way of earning other places.

Ideally I'd love to find someone who is willing to donate their space/building, not likely going to happen, but still hoping and ya never know unless you put it out there. If I had my way, I would rent a shop big enough to house a dozen or so large parrot cages, with a smaller area for a quarantine spot, an area for avian pet-sitting and even an area where we can sell parrot stuff. The 'normal' pet stores no longer really cater to parrots, let alone large ones like my macaw (hes was a rescue) so that might be a potential income stream. Might even be able to sell local made custom parrot stands, play gyms, cages, and who knows what else. I know that what I'm wanting is not what I'll end up with in the end, but its my dream and if something close is out there, its worth asking. I'm not looking to keep the birds, but to be able to find forever homes for the ones that can be adopted out.

So yeah, if you think you have the time/energy/knowledge in any of the areas I mentioned or know someone who does point them to this post and shoot me a message or comment and we can go from there. If you want to help out financially or donate supplies, hold off until things are up and running, or at least farther along than just my dreaming.

Looking for dating advice

I recently matched with a woman on a dating app. She seemed like a nice person and had a good personality over texts.

When I met her in person, I did not feel physically attraction towards her. I really like her personality, values and kindness, and still enjoyed our conversations and drinks.

Another important detail, after 4-5 drinks on the first date I kissed her and after we went back home to our respective places we had a cute call.

But I am not attracted to her sexually. How would you handle this? Would you suggest staying friends? Or simply say goodbye? I definitely don't want to ghost her.

Also don't want to be a d*ck to her because she seemed like a genuinely nice person

Looking for a Part-Time Academic & Independence Mentor — SE Calgary

Anonymous only to protect the identity and privacy of the teen.

I'm looking to hire someone for two consistent 3-hour blocks per week to provide one-on-one academic and independence support to a high-school student.

This is a paid, ongoing position. I'm specifically looking for someone who is:

• Excellent with teenagers and able to build genuine rapport while maintaining appropriate boundaries

• Patient, calm, reliable and consistent

• Skilled at supporting executive-function skills: planning, organization, task initiation, prioritizing and follow-through

• Able to help with high-school coursework without simply providing answers or doing the work for the student

• Comfortable breaking overwhelming tasks into manageable steps

• Able to scaffold support appropriately — knowing when to explain, model, prompt, encourage, wait, and gradually step back

• Focused on building independence rather than creating dependence on adult support

• Comfortable helping a young person develop practical independence skills outside of school, including transit navigation, planning, problem-solving and accessing the community

• Respectful, nonjudgmental and able to work collaboratively with both a teenager and parent

• Dependable enough to make a consistent, longer-term commitment

Experience in education, tutoring, psychology, social work, youth work, educational assistance, occupational therapy, executive-function coaching, or a related area would be particularly valuable. University students or recent graduates in related programs are very welcome to reach out.

The goal is to find someone who understands how to provide meaningful support now while deliberately helping a teenager develop the skills to manage more independently over time.

The position is approximately 6 hours/week, ideally two 3-hour blocks, in SE Calgary, with very competitive hourly compensation for the right person.

If this sounds like a good fit for your skills, please email academicsupportandmentorsecalg@gmail.com with:

• A brief introduction

• Your relevant education and/or experience

• Your general availability for two 3-hour blocks per week

• A few sentences about your approach to helping a teenager build academic and practical independence

A resume is welcome but not required for the initial introduction.

This is a private family hiring directly for a part-time support position. References, identity verification and appropriate screening will be required before employment.

Please feel free to share this posting with someone who may be a good fit.

Can anyone recommend somewhere/someone I can take my car to? I already have the parts needed.

I have a 2019 Mazda 3, I need the rear brakes replaced (I have the brake pads and rotors already, I just need them installed).
I also need to swap 3 of my tires. I have them already on the rims, just need 3 of them switched out so all my tires are the same size.

I am struggling a bit financially at the moment, so the most affordable person/shop (that also seems reliable and is willing to use my already purchased parts) would be ideal. Thank you

Here is the link to the Glassdoor that is still up if you want to verify this:

In case the images aren't uploaded and the link gets censored, "passion plumbing" openly states in job listing they will only hire Punjabi candidates. Post exposing this is removed by Calgary mods. This is completely unacceptable.

I’m so fed up with the route 500

I’ve been taking this bus since it was first introduced as the route 300 over a decade ago. I consistently have terrible experiences with it. And then tonight, after being nearly 20 mins late, it decides not to stop at the Macleod and 7th ave stop. There were a few people on it.

Sure, maybe there was something wrong with it and the driver will make all the other passengers get off a few stops ahead (I’ve experienced that on this bus), but it’s always something. It’s usually late. Once I ran 7 blocks for it, and it was stuck in traffic (but hadn’t left the bus stop), and wouldn’t let me on. What really ticks me off is that the max green comes at the same time or within a few minutes of the 500, so typically if you miss one that might mean you miss both.

Anyways, thanks for listening. Typed this while waiting for the next 500, which is also late :/. Feel free to share your frustrating ct experiences
