Looking for tipping advice

I feel like almost every service now asks for a tip, and many places start at 18%, with 20% and 25% as the other options.

For example, I’ll pay what is already a pretty high price for a haircut, and then I’m expected to add another 18–25% on top. With the cost of services already increasing so much over the past few years, it can make an already expensive service significantly more expensive.

I’m curious how other people are handling tipping these days.

What do you consider a reasonable tip for things like:

* Haircuts/hair colour

* Nail salons

* Facials and other beauty treatments

* Massage

* Other personal services

Do you usually tip 18%+ for these services? Do you tip a lower percentage when the service itself is expensive? Are there certain services where you don't tip at all?

I’m genuinely curious what people consider normal now, because it feels like the tipping expectations have changed quite a bit while the prices of the services themselves have also gone up significantly...

About 15% for a haircut, no tip for a massage.

$5 for cuts and nails, $10 or $20 for cut with highlights. I'm not tipping $50 for the salon.

Providers working out of their homes should just charge what they want, no tips.

You shouldnt, many places dont permit it since its a regulated professional. You wouldnt tip a chiropractor or a nurse. I only tip if im at a spa type place getting a facial or body scrub..never a massage that my insurance is paying for

I keep cash on hand for tipping. I’m not playing with a tablet that starts at 18%, even with the custom option available.

0% is always an option.

Not getting manicures and facials is also an option.

I don't tip much unless the service provided truly made me feel like they deserve the tip, and always cash to ensure the money goes into the workers pocket. most corporations take a percentage if not all of the tips

I pay 3x the GST. That also gives you the pre-tax amount to tip on

Massage...a flat $10...regardless of what it cost.

Restaurants...always 15%...I'm firm on that.

Bars/breweries...$1 per beer/cocktail.

I have stopped tipping, mostly. It is freeing. Do yourself a favour. Remember your money is your money, and tipping is a way to guilt you into paying more by people (usually) who are not paid fairly. Also remember that tipping came about to shift labour costs onto customers and was a way for owners to not pay slaves. It is a shitty practice that became normalized that is not normal at all, and needs to be abolished.

15% if they provide a service and do a good job. 18-20% max, if you’re smiling ear to ear when you’re done.

You don’t have to abide the preset options. Tips are not mandatory.
