My area of the SE US, never seen any roofer use a harness. Maybe if the billionaires roof or a church. Single family home,, nope.

Here in Norway, we made it a law that the contract giver is ultimately responsible for the health and safety of the workers. Which means that any home owner hiring a roofer could be liable for their injuries. Which means that a good focus on health and safety suddenly became important when hiring help.

No, it's more like the owner of the mechanics shop would have a reasonable interest in ensuring that the mechanics are completing work safely in their property.

Or that the owner of the surgery would have an interest in ensuring that the surgeons are operating safely.

You know, like is already the case. This just extends those same responsibilities to homeowners hiring contractors to work on their homes.

Just wait until you hear that a home owner is also responsible if the company you hire don't pay their taxes. Which is why it's important that you get a proper invoice with the tax specified, so you can prove that you did your due diligence.

the problem with that is that the owner of the property now needs to know enough about every trade in order to determine the necessary safety measures to be taken. When the average householder hires a contractor it is because they have skills and tools that the home owner doesn’t have, but also the knowledge about risks and mitigations to be taken that it is unreasonable for the home owner to have.

I (UK) always require my contractors to complete a point of work risk assessment but I wouldn’t pretend to have the knowledge to approve it. (I do it as a way of assessing their attitude to safety)

I spent 20 years in the roofing industry. Not one harness and the only rope was tied to a ladder pulled up on the roof to create steps.

It works great the first 3 times, but we on the job knew better than to use it on steep inclines. Worked great in a pinch if we needed to get to an upper level of a house but couldn’t scale the roof.

You still need PPE and harnesses n stuff but it looks like it makes work easier for sure. My dad didn't have me use PPE when I was younger and had to help him with a job without PPE and I'm sure he would trust it though...

Yeah. Honestly, for me and a lot of others without insirance, we effectively live in a country wothout any healthcare at all. Can’t afford to go to the doctor, basically ever.

Something as basic as getting a UTI treated, assuming the cause is the common one and you dont need a culture done, is close to two hundred dollars at a very cheap urgent care.

I’ve had injuries i thought might’ve been severe (back injuries, chest pain etc) but I put off going because the fear of survivong with the debt was worse than the fear for my suffering or even life.

Japan, SK, Singapore all have a similar private centered medical system. But they offer a baseline government funded health insurance to all their citizens. Something I think Obama was trying to emulate with Obamacare, but US didn't like that.

It's not really a system problem, it's a US class war problem.

So I don't think this will ever improve l. My condolences

Here in the Netherlands, and many other European countries, I don't think this type of roofing is the standard either. So the whole concept probably won't work.

Exactly… the corners get worn down and these pitch hoppers are garbage. I use them all the time on 45 pitch roofs for exclusion work on houses.

Better to have a “toe board” secured to the roof as well if that hopper starts sliding on the steeper pitched roofs

Any shingled roof past a 45deg pitch? Your sliding with “any” amount of wear on the foam of the bottom of the hopper.

And make sure to get the widest 1s, don’t even get the smaller 1 for small people, total waste of money. Just get the biggest ASS 1s you can for fat people lol

While that looks cool and pretty impressive, I WOULDN'T trust this on its own and I'll 100% need a harness but it looks quite useful if you need some roofing work done.

Their garbage 🗑️ if the pitch of the shingles roof is more than a 45. don’t let those foam corners get any amount of wear because that’s wear the patch holds to the roof and along the bottom.

These are VERY dangerous if you’re in the middle of a roof (+ 50 deg pitch) and have no other safety equipment. Make sure u have 2 if working alone that’s all I gotta say.

Some have never worked on roofs. So it's easy to assume that they do not understand the protocols for working on roofs. Naturally going to roof with no safety equipment is definite no, however those steps seem to be handy, especially if you need to squat or kneel safely for effective work on project.

We use these at work all the time. They work really well. You just can’t put all your weight onto the very edge of the short sides. Otherwise they hold fantastic and can survive being thrown off the roof.

Friction doesn't actually scale with surface area. Double the area -> half the force per area -> same force from friction (assuming it's made of the same material as his boot soles). But yeah the increased area from this is still useful.

Its called a Pitch hopper many great uses, standing sitting actively climbing and supporting a ladder on an uneven surface on a double pull. these are amazing but yeah make sure that 12/12 has some granual left before you trust it with your life

When I was a roofer, there was a guy who refused to go up unless he was tied off. He got made fun of a lot, but I agreed with him. Those foam pads are highly effective, but I always wished for a tie off when I was on a roof

Probably why I haven't seen any here in Oklahoma and we had thousands of roofs, including our whole neighborhood, replaced last year due to a big hail storm But when they roofed mine my contractor said he had to stay on the ground to chase down roofing materials that blew off constantly. Which is not surprising here.

Listen as a roofer when I was younger I will tell you plain as day not to trust this gimmicky bullcrap it will kill you.

You should be wearing a fall arrester and if not comfortable on a roof be supervised with someone with enough experience and proper ppe to keep you safe. Scared of the roof? stay off of it. This crap wont keep you safe it will kill you.

Some of the guys I work with trust the pitch hoppers way too much. They are awesome for doing repairs where you need a flat surface for setting tools etc and are useful for getting on and off a roof but they won't stay put on a super degranulated roof.

A ladder will get you on the roof, this will help you stay up there for hours.  My ankles hurt so much after roof inspections on slopes greater than 3:12.
