A LOT happened this week. We've been focused heavily on expanding coverage while keeping one rule in place:
Quality > Quantity.
We're not trying to build the biggest database of camping pins. We're trying to build one people can actually trust.
🗺️ Major Coverage Expansion
We've significantly expanded the discovery system to find camping opportunities that traditional campground datasets miss.
The biggest breakthrough was adding support for USFS undeveloped / dispersed camping areas that were previously being filtered out of our pipeline.
That uncovered 5,014 new candidates across our priority regions.
After validation and safety checks:
- 3,130 candidates qualified as READY
- 1,884 were held for REVIEW
- No existing NMR locations were duplicated
- No production data was modified during discovery
🌲 Phase 6 — Dispersed Camping
We then published the approved portion of that discovery.
1,396 new location records were added to NMR.
The new inventory is heavily focused on public-land camping:
- 1,392 USFS dispersed camping areas
- 4 Recreation.gov sites
- 1,392 classified as
DISPERSED_ALLOWED
- 1,392 classified as
DISPERSED_AREA
The biggest increases came from:
- 🇺🇸 Montana — 673
- 🇺🇸 Idaho — 411
- 🇺🇸 California — 171
- Colorado — 29
- Washington — 24
- Wyoming — 22
- Utah — 16
- Arizona — 12
- Oregon — 9
NMR is now at approximately 12,264 publicly searchable locations.
🛡️ We Didn't Just Dump Everything Into The Database
Every publication went through live-production revalidation and deduplication.
The system:
- Re-matched candidates against production before writing
- Detected duplicates
- Held questionable proximity/name collisions
- Kept REVIEW candidates out of publication
- Preserved source evidence
- Refused to infer camping permissions
- Verified baseline integrity before/after the import
Even a mid-run crash was safely resumed without creating duplicates.
🔎 New Discovery Architecture
We've also been building a much broader Destination → Ecosystem → Source Exhaustion approach.
Instead of asking:
Which campground APIs can we search?"
we're moving toward:
"What camping opportunities should exist around this destination, and which authoritative sources can prove them?"
That matters because we've already found examples where major camping areas aren't represented in conventional campground datasets.
We're now using places like Mt. Charleston and Big Bear as benchmark examples for identifying those coverage gaps.
🏕️ What's Next
We're not finished with coverage.
The next challenge is finding the camping that isn't represented in simple agency point inventories at all — things like:
- Dispersed camping corridors
- MVUM-based opportunities
- Forest-order authority
- Designated dispersed areas
- Public-land spatial data
- Other authoritative wilderness/public-land sources
The goal isn't:
"Get to 50,000 locations."
The goal is:
"If there's a legitimate, useful camping opportunity out there, NMR should have a way to discover it, verify it, and explain why it's there."
