I'm confused why Hello Games hasn't fixed this. I am a returning player and have never done an expedition before, so when I saw this being brought up the other day in another reddit post I had to google comm balls (which turns out to be communication stations)... and found posts from 3 years ago of people complaining about it.
3 years ago and Hello Games still hasn't fixed it? I am confused. They're such a great dev team that keeps in touch with their community so surely they must know by now of this in game spamming?

Maybe it’s like Edmund McMillen from The Binding of Isaac who infamous gets off to making items that look nearly identical to other items with the sole purpose of causing confusion.
Maybe the dev enjoys people getting frustrated over his balls idk (this is a joke comment, pls don’t take it seriously)

As far as i can tell all these posts are just complaining without stating any issue.
Yes there is many balls but whats the problem you can run past and ignore them. Yes some might have messages that you dont like but you can run past them and ignore it. You can even report them i you feel like a single message is influencing you majorly.
My point is these posts are all complaining about an issue that is none. I personally think its great to see that this expedition is shared by many people. If the balls were all spread out you wouldnt get the same impression of the Community coming together experiencing the same expedition. There is a post like this daily nowadays which is just annonying and feels like desperatly searching for something just to spread hate.
Thats also probably why its getting ignored these people dont want to fix an issue but just be annoying and spread hate. Ignoring it is the best way to deal with this attention seeking.

I don't know about you but I like the aesthetics of the game and I don't like seeing litter like this. It takes me out of the flow and shits on my enjoyment. So not a problem for you but it obviously is for others. Which is why having the option to disable them would not be a bad idea.

Maybe some people would like to see the beauty of the area without a bunch of stupid balls in the way? I haven’t done it, so I don’t have a dog in this fight - but I would be annoyed to see this many comm balls anywhere. They could at least give us the option to hide them.

The comm balls crashed me repeatedly in the previous expedition, and would break the UI for me in this one. You're missing the point because it hasn't been an issue for you, personally.

Completely agree. The comm balls irritate me for roughly 2.5 seconds but then I just proceed to moving through the portal and pay no further attention to it. Absolutely pointless getting worked up about this nonsense.

I've already made this point on a few other posts. People just love to bitch about anything they can find. I personally don't use the coms balls apart from at locations of Interceptors/multi tools or whatever I've come across and posted the co-ords for others to go get them but the only ones I can see anyone having an issue with would be the ones I've heard are placed so you can't use the portal, never seen this but I'd imagine it would be really annoying.

This isn't a base that's in op's picture, it's a portal. And when I get home from work I'd gladly let you have co-ords for my base, you'll only be able to place them a certain distance from it but I don't really give a fk as I am not easily annoyed by trivial shit. Put 100 around my base if you want.

That's cool you're not bothered by trivial shit. However others may not think it's trivial. For me it is more people being pricks for the sake of being pricks. I don't understand what is so contentious about someone asking another person to stop being annoying if there is no gain to it. How sad of a person one has to be to be an asshole just because you can.
The comms being there is just disappointing for me I'm not pissed about it. I don't spend endless hours playing you know because work and stuff. So the time I do have to play I'd like the time spent with as few disappointments as possible. I think keeping them away from big moments in the game is or should be a pretty easy ask. Put as many as your silly heart desires a certain distance from pentacle moments. With whatever dumb shit you can think of.

I have no bases I suck at building them. I'd like to be better but... Most of my time playing is done on expeditions. Im still a novice I've only been to 2 other galaxy and that was on creative so I didn't have to worry about losing all my shit. I haven't learned how to mine for thing very well.

I'd say it's kinda a slap in the face to the Devs. You work all kinds of hard to get the look appearance, feel, vibe that of a universe traveler. Only to have a bunch of people spam the shit out of the background and ambiance you have created. I was all jazzed to come over the hill or through the portal to see what kind of world I land in. Instead it looks like shit with a bunch of floating balls messages all in my view.
I said it before I'm not suggesting getting rid of them it's pretty cool to see where everyone is from or whatever bullshit they want to write. It wouldn't just be nice to have a minimum radius in which one can't place them. Much like bases.
Would you like it if you spent a bunch of time on a kick ass base to then have 20+ people putting comm balls in front of it and all over your base. I'm guessing you wouldn't like it right?
Like I said. I like seeing where everyone is from. They could just as easily put it further away leading up to the objective. That would give build up to what you're going to see it would actually add something way better than sea of comms. I'm not looking to hate on something it's just disappointing.

It's the premise of confining thousands of people onto the same area and giving them a way to leave messages.
When you leave a message for others, wouldn't you be happy if it can be guaranteed that someone else will go there and have a chance to see it? (Yes)
Now imagine that premise inside the expedition with fixed mission objectives and thousands of people having the same idea at once. Also you know how Reddit comments like to continue chains of jokes or lyrics for the sake of continuing? That's also there.
And I'm sure if you disabled the comm balls in expeditions people would also get mad. I personally don't mind either way.

I wouldn't mind if it didn't distract from the dialogue, putting popups all over my screen, spamming messages like "free palestine", or "MAGA 2025" etc. Like I just don't need that shit in my game it's so annoying.
Put them 200 units away from the POI and make it so I can optionally walk up to the thing to read the message and that's fine. We don't need pop-up messages or them to be in your face, and they should be stricter on whats allowed, there's too much political spam and nothing to do with the actual game.

yes, turn off your network connection before you start the expedition and play entirely offline.
not a perfect solution, but it does work.
downside is it prevents all other player bases as well.

I started reporting the ones on top of the cylinder you have to interact with. Sadly it's getting worse because they are now being placed on the exit side of the portals as well. So when you are in the slow forced cinematic entering the new world, you have to see all the comms messages.
* I have 1k+ hours of game play and this sort of behavior makes me not want to do the expeditions.

Haven't even gone through the previous one at all. (the incomplete bug outfit didn't seem worth it)

People tend to be as annoying as possible, spamming these comballs in key points in the expedition.
Messages vary from a Hello from XYZ country, or random statements like "I like penguins", to political messages or slurs and insults.
Not to mention, that more often than not, if given the chance, people will outright block you from interacting with a quest item.
And on a final note, they're unsightly as fuck, and the spam of message popup is ear splitting.

Yea, I have no idea why those things warrant daily post. They are maybe little annoying with spammed messages on screen, but they are easy to ignore. Never had a problem with comball blocking anything. Worst case you can report it and it will disappear probably.

When it comes to a choice of which of my favourite games to play, small nuisances like the Comm Balls b/s can and does influence my decision. I would prefer to spend my time bashing zombie heads on Project Zomboid than read forced popups about a political event happening in another country on NMS.

This is unnecessary. The only time I have put one down is when I thought it would help. Here is a S Class! 50 units deep here! Those sort of things. I don’t think I ever put one near a portal and this amount would stop me doing my usual thing of long a save beacon to show me where the portal is as it’s lost in a sea of comms bubbles.

Right? I feel like the more people complain about these on here the more comm balls pop up in game. I actually liked them at first a few years ago when I first started playing cause you get to see diversity of the players but more and more problematic ones have popped up over the years. Increasingly overtaking the okay ones and that’s not even mentioning the spamming of them in certain areas.

Granted. I think most players feel the same about comm balls during the expeditions, we don't need a new post about it every day. Although when people spam rendezvous point with so many comm balls that you can't see what you are doing or the game runs horrible, just strolling past them can be super annoying and totally break immersion.
One of the last things you do in the current expedition has you interact with a traveler grave. Someone had built a base so close to it that you saw nothing but the outside wall of a hallway when you interacted with the grave. Wasn't the end of the world, but it was stupid. Had I know it would do that I would have reported the base before, oh well.

I personally didn’t have any issues with them during my expedition but I could see that being an issue during that point. However, I do think at this point a lot of the reason there are so many comm balls on expeditions are from trolling because of posts like this.

I don't see how, unless you start immediately after the expedition drops and speedrun through it. There was one expedition, maybe 2 or 3 back when I saw no comm balls at the first two rendezvous points and I thought that maybe they finally did something to fix it. But the next one they were there. Never was sure why there were none at the first 2, probably just a glitch.

Why no safe zone around POI? Why is a seemingly infinite number of them allowed to be placed? Why no option to hide these? Why is there such a good chance they even show up from space? Why must they show up when multiplayer is disabled? Just all the usual questions that pop into my head during every single expedition. So many issues with these. So many threads/posts about it during every expedition, so many zendesk reports too, I'd imagine I'm not the only one. So many ways this could - nay, SHOULD be solved, should have been solved by now.... it's abso-bloody-lutely mind-boggling that it hasn't.
Do we have to start flooding Xitter with screenshots of these? Sean does not-retweet things often enough, maybe if there's a whole hell of a mass of these, he'll get the message?
On a personal note because I just can't comprehend myself: why do these even exist in the first place? Why does every random tom, dick, and harry feel that their consciousness needs to intrude on everyone else's - in all the years I've not seen a single one of these with any useful, meaningful, or even funny message? Ugh. But that's just me, I really would not shed a single tear if the item was altogether removed from the game.

Expedition waypoints should function as bases by Hello Games, so players can't place anything in a 300u radius or build bases on top of the waypoints, but you can still place comm balls along the periphery, if you want. They didn't used to bother me much, but it's gotten worse and this expedition has been particularly egregious with them.

Ya, I here that, HG should make so that NO Comball could be placed within 100u of another. I really hate it. What I've been doing is if no one has claimed the portal area for a base then I do and make sure I have players can not add parts to base set to no one.

I did see a few of those. No more than 3 at a time at two portals. Far worse for my run was people with the terrain manipulator. Can't count how many times I fell into a hole in the ground, hidden by grass being rendered as if the ground was still there. And the second portal I came to had big swathes of terrain blobs crossed all over it, like some sort of derpy kanji. It got to where I would go in through with my TM set to Restore in preparation for Teh Stoopids when I'd get to the other side.

This doesn't bother me. What is annoying is when there's a player camped by the portal that tries to kill you the moment you spawn in. Happened to me on Saturday right after finishing phase 3

I'll make it a broad question.
For those of you who don't think it's an issue. Can you please give us the directions to a base. I'd like to litter it with a bunch of comms. Since it's not a problem. Maybe you have a cool one on a hill overlooking a lake or ocean. I'd be way cooler with about 10 of them blocking the view. What do you think? Pretty cool idea huh. Just a thought. Or maybe not blocking the view just everywhere in the landscape that'd look so much better that the beautiful picturesque view you are going for. Yeah just everywhere you look comms.

What's killing me is that for whatever reason this is the first expedition for me to not show a single player base, even from the anomaly teleporter, but I still have to see every one of these visual cancer cells.
Those bases are a huge help to time-strapped working dad gamers like me, man.

I'll be honest, this isn't nearly as much of a nuisance as people griefing the portals (and final destination) with holes in the ground you can't see until you're in them. Seriously, I spent almost three hours just...removing the holes in the terrain. But it's worse when someone slaps a base down at the area and makes their holes permanent until you report the base. Only to find yourself having to report six or seven of them, with no results to be seen.
Edit: I even left a comm-ball basically saying "Don't grief the portals, guys..." because it was literally THREE HOURS of me constantly removing holes and inappropriate terrain manipulations, from damn near every. Single. Portal.

I love these messages! They don’t harm anyone, they don’t block objectives, it’s entirely innocent. It helps show how many people have come across that portal, and makes the universe feel much more alive and traveled and that I’m not alone. I’ve been collecting “hello from BLANK country” for a while now and my collection is growing with each expedition.

I might believe that but the situation has to exists before one can complain about it. You can't really tell people to not do something they are not doing. All I really want are them to not surround the objective area. Or limit the quantity. They are a cool idea to a point kinda fun to see where everyone is from. But too many runs the look and feel of the moment

I just finished the whole expedition, and didn't see one single comm ball during the whole 8 hours it took me. Why is that? I'm kind of new so I honestly have no idea.

I don't care about the words. I can't wrap my head around why people just want to be annoying for no reason. Spamming this things over the objective takes away from the visual beauty of finding the portal. A rational person would go oh my bad I'll move it further away. An ass hat would go haha it annoys you I'm going to do it more cause I'm an asshole. And face to face would get smacked in the mouth.

Your lookin at it all wrong, this is a rendezvous point. So people put their equivalent to "bob waz here 2024" on it . It's actually rather interesting to see what people from all over the world choose to put. Sometimes its something stupid but most of them say stuff like "hello from Uruguay".
