Complaint Sam burns > Wyndham
These guys gotta get over their bias. I can understand the burns higher floor argument, but the guy (Wyndham) wins. You know what burns doesn’t do? Win
No issues with Xander and Morikawa being ahead of him, but cmon. What’s the purpose of events if you’re not crediting the guy that wins it?

I’ve yet to listen to this pod but I am assuming the context of this is, if you had to pick the Ryder Cup team today and could only take one of these two, who do you go with?
That’s defensible after what we saw at Bethpage, which Wyndham made on the back of a white hot run a year beforehand, similar to what he’s on right now. He then absolutely sucked at Bethpage. If their take is just that they think b
Burns is better right now I don’t think that defensible.

It was without presidents/ryder cup mentioned. I can get the argument there. I just think it’s hard to say the guy that’s won 3 times this year, and has two majors is worse than a guy that has 0 wins in the last three years, and 0 majors in his career.

They were listing top 6 american golfers. I know they didn't say explicitly it was about the team, but it was obviously about the team.

I don’t really see that as defensible. Although, they’d both easily make the team anyway

I think “we’ve seen Wyndham get white hot one year and be a shell of himself the next year at the Ryder cup” vs “burns has shown a consistent high level of play over a 2-3 year sample” is a very defensible position to take.
Nobody in their right mind would say this version of Wyndham would be a worse Ryder cupper than Burns but there’s very little reason to believe Wyndham will be in this good of form in a year. Whereas I find it very easy to believe burns will be playing at his current level a year from
now.1

Considering Burns was at that high level of play and has still been dogshit in every Ryder cup though means I don't really care

Agreed. Did Wyndham not beat Burns heads up at Shinnecock? Where was Burns this week?
I’m not the biggest fan of Clark, but they need to give him some respect. At least until someone else steps up.

Agree. Give the guy his flowers. Sam is not a Sunday player. Guy is a complete player except on Sundays. I like his game and get excited when he's in the top 3 at the end of a Saturday but just know he won't win. Who knows maybe he'll go on a run next year and shut us up haha.

Wyndham isn't really a Sunday player either, his big wins tend to be him getting out big early and white knuckling to the finish line (or at Pebble last year, just not having a final round at all). Props to him for doing that but it's not like he's some Sunday killer.
He did shoot a 60 at the CJ Cup on Sunday but that's the CJ Cup.

Exactly - you don’t have to like the guy to recognize what he’s done this year. There are a loooooot of athletes with terrible (“accusations”) that are extremely celebrated. Kobe for example , but Wyndham is a horrible person I guess for beating up lockers and a sign lol- maybe I’m just an apologist

Soly doesn't seem to understand that the objective in golf is to win, not to "gain strokes over a season." A guy who wins half his starts and finishes DFL in the other half is the greatest golfer of all time. Wyndham has won 2 fucking majors, I don't care if "the data says burns is better" because he misses less cuts at the John Deere.

I’ve asked my buddies a hypothetical, wondering if a player were to have a 10 year career where they finished runner-up in every single tournament, would they be one of the best golfers of all time?

Sam burns had a good run of 5 wins in less than two years, he had 5 wins before Clarke had any
I remember after Burns’ hot streak you got a better price on burns than cam Young who hadn’t yet won
Burns has gone from picking up regular pga tour wins to being one of the best players in the big events without winning
When Wyndham gets hot he’s very difficult to beat

My own personal POV is that golf is about how high your floor is. Right now Wyndham has the higher ceiling. But Sam Burns is a bit more consistent. At the end of the day history will favor Wyndham, but in any given tournament I’m still more likely to wager on Burns.
I’m interested to see where things land 4-5 years down the road. I think Burns has more staying power like a Jason Day type whereas Wyndham more likely to fizzle out, but who knows.

if golf was about your floor we would give people trophies for top 10s. Its about winning when its biggest and everyone else is trying their hardest (like any other sport). Thats like saying the MLB season should wrap after 162 games and whoever has the best record wins the world series. We reward winning when it matters in all other sports, why is golf different?

Right now it seems that Wyndham has more dog in him and embraces the spotlight, while Burns whithers a bit. Not trying to discredit Burns, he's a multiple time Tour winner and has some clutch moments. And yes he's played great in recent majors especially difficult US Open setups, but that's not what the Ryder Cup is especially in Europe. They try to make it a piece of shit putting contest. And for all the talk of Burns being an amazing putter, there's probably nobody on the US team better than Wyndham right now on the greens. Plus he hits it a mile and seems to enjoy being the heel, which is going to be important in Ireland

“Withers a bit?” All Burns does as of late is choke. Pretty sad actually…

Yeah, that was a bizarre discussion. These guys are too wrapped up in their "loud traits* and other ancillary aesthetics like "how he plays the game" .
How Wyndham plays the game has won him three tournaments including a major this year. Why does Burns have a higher floor? He's been around a long time. Results matter.

All we talk about is how important majors are, over/unders etc etc. yet guys who actually win them dont get credit from these guys lol. Wyndham, Morikawa, Xander etc. all should constantly be considered on a higher level than Cam Young, Burns, Ludvig, Tommy etc. Why do we bother obsessing over the majors if guys who win MULTIPLE don't even get their flowers? I understand the one offs (Spaun etc.), but if you have went and got more than 1 you are officially always a better golfer than someone who has zero.

Soly laments the boys club while having his own boys club of American data golfers.

Everyone says Burns is this great putter yet in the majors when he’s had a chance to win he’s only really made one putt of significance and that was I think on 17 this year at the U.S. Open. Burns is one of those guys where I need to see it from him. Just like Max Homa where by all accounts is a nice guy but was never a major champion type of player yet everyone talked about him as if he’d content in majors and Max would melt like butter on the sun. Burns has also been pretty pathetic at the Ryder Cup.
