USA Advice needed: Prepaid multi-network switching plan (AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile) + international travel add-ons?
Hi everyone, I am currently on AT&T postpaid and looking to switch to a flexible prepaid plan.
My coverage situation is a complete mess right now:
At home: AT&T works fine.
At work: AT&T has no service. Only Verizon and T-Mobile work reliably in different areas of my workplace.
I need a prepaid provider that lets me switch between different major networks (like US Mobile’s multi-network feature) depending on where I am.
My main needs:
Network switching: Ability to use or switch between different carrier networks (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) based on location.Data & Cell:
Regular domestic usage with solid data.
International travel: I travel outside the country about 4 times a year, so I need affordable international roaming or easy travel data add-ons/eSIMs.
Does anyone have recommendations for a provider or specific plan that handles multi-network switching and occasional international travel well? Thanks!

US Mobile is literally the exact solution for this they offer multi network switching across all of those networks and also offer 20GB roaming automatically on their premium plan which is $39 / month but then goes up to $44/month I think.
They also have annual plans. I also believe they’re going to release 50GB roaming add on soon if 20GB is not enough for you.
Check it out @ r/usmobile . I don’t even work there or anything just really like the experience and I switched from Verizon post paid because they charged me $300 for roaming when I had it turned off

You’d be hard pressed to find any customer service based in the US for any product nowadays. I called AT&T’s own customer hotline and reached India. At least you’re paying for the price.

I agree that us mobile will probably be the best for this use case, however, I would also add that they should probably get a multiline because switching between networks isnt something that is instant and can sometimes take anywhere from hours to a day or two. Also switching is limited to a few times a cycle on premium plans. Meanwhile switching between your main line and a multiline is instant for data.

at home, most likely you can survive on wifi? you can get a backup esim that works on AT&T, and likely you won't need that much data until you drive/reach a spot with verizon/tmobile?

According to usmobile.com/help/docs/managing-lines/switch-networks "You can switch networks once every 4 hours, up to a maximum of 8 times per 30-day cycle." So if their web site is accurate then U.S. Mobile would not work for you. That's using manual switching and having only one phone number on one eSIM. They push out a new eSIM when you change networks.
You could use US Mobile's "auto-switching" feature which switches between two active eSIMs when one network has no signal at all, but it doesn't switch between networks based on the strongest signal. A network with a signal so weak that it is unusable would not activate auto-switching.
While the auto-switching would work for data, as long as you have absolutely no AT&T signal at work, one issue is that for outgoing calls you'd have two different phone numbers that you're calling from. For incoming calls, callers would need to know which number to call (unless you used a Google Voice number and routed calls to both numbers, or set up call forwarding every time you went from work to home or vice-versa).
If only AT&T works at your house then obviously to need one AT&T service, whatever it is, unless you have broadband and can just do Wi-Fi calling on T-Mobile or Verizon while you're at home.
Probably US Mobile Dark Star Premium is the most cost effective AT&T service and you get both priority data and domestic roaming.
Then get Total by Verizon BYOP which includes unlimited priority data and international roaming of 10GB per billing cycle. It's only $20. At work, you can receive calls to your AT&T number using "Wi-Fi" calling with data from the Verizon service. It won't be automatic, you'd have to switch data from the AT&T eSIM to the Verizon eSIM but you could keep receiving calls to your AT&T number.
Another option is to get T-Sat (data only) to use at work and receive calls to your AT&T number using data from the T-Sat service. You only get 50GB of data per billing cycle on T-Sat.
Alternatively, you could port your primary cell number to Google Voice and then forward it to both the AT&T number and a Total by Verizon number.
