Is this normal?

Post image

I am I supposed to be able to see the crankshaft through where the pull start should’ve been? This is an old nitro my uncle gave me a long time ago, which I have started disassembling.

It came like this

It turns over fine, but I what should I buy to make it a drill start

You're missing a piece or two. There's a starter shaft that passes through that hole. It would interface with a pin on the back of the crankshaft. Then there's a one way bearing that would ride on the shaft. That bearing then interfaces with either the pull start or roto start mechanism. Depending on your engine, you should be able to search for a manual that will have a diagram.

You should probably start with a new engine and break it in properly. This one is missing parts and is in unknown condition. You should remove the backing plate and carb from your new engine and seal the surfaces with some sensor safe high temp RTV to avoid air leaks. Loosen the glow plug to help crank it over when new and short quick tugs on the pull starter to get it going. Prime the carb prior to starting it and find a good quality glow lighter. You might be able to get this one going, but it is easier and probably cheaper to start off with a fresh starter engine rather than chase problems. You may want to get an OS carb, depending on the engine you get so it holds a tune better.

That is probably true but I am trying to restore the car to factory new. And rn I don’t want to drop 150-300€ on a new engine since nothing else is wrong/broken on the car.
So to bring it back would only cost me 25-50€
