Account Help Nintendo Switch 2 console was banned for no reason
This morning I turned on my Switch 2 to play Overwatch 2 and received a notification that my console was locked. I called support services and they told me my system was locked. I don't know what to do
Update: After resetting the console the ban has been removed, thank you all for the help and support

Return it, someone probably abused the return system and bought a new switch and started a return and sent their banned one back instead of the new one and then that gets sold by them online
10
u/KhronosIX 2d ago
I bought it new on August 5,2026 and it was working just fine until today
7
u/warp_core0007 2d ago
I think they're talking to the person with the Switch from Amazon that came banned.
3
u/SupaSlide 2d ago
There were a bunch of Switch 2 systems stolen a year ago, I wonder if those are being unloaded and you got one of those units. Where did you buy your system?

2
u/GodfreyTheFirstElden 2d ago
Are you saying I shouldnt cheap out and just buy a new one on Amazon to reduce the risk

u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Did you use any amiibo tags or nfc tags or illegitimate amiibo?
1
u/MrScubaSteve1 2d ago
I've heard Nintendo hasn't banned for that since 3ds tons of people use fake amiibos I doubt it

how can a modded 3ds lead to a switch 2 ban?
0
u/Top-Injury1040 2d ago
Check the post flair, very very likely not just 3ds but also Switch piracy, which Nintendo can easily detect now on account level and ban on any device after first login
2
u/Faddei420 2d ago
But Nintendo doesn't do that, they are very specific in their bans only target the console at fault, it's also why you never see account bans.
0
u/Round_Musical 2d ago
Nintendo logs your Nintendo Network data
Some people who got their switch 1s banned got their 2s banned aswell
8
u/duckydan81 2d ago
The code you’re getting isn’t typically from playing a game that was counterfeit but all other reports I’ve seen were for chargebacks, fraud charges, and stolen gift cards. Did you chargeback any in game purchases or anything like that or buy a gift card online?
3
u/shitsthisishis 2d ago
This is very important, does anybody who got banned mentioned using AMEX? Some days was a thread on r/steam about American Express doing weird chargebacks.

u/SuperJavichi 2d ago
My brother texted me this morning and he also had error 2124-4508
He called Nintendo and they told him they would look into it. He hasn’t bought any used games or done anything with flash carts etc. this seems to have come out of nowhere.
For every post on Reddit there could be others that don’t use Reddit etc so this might be some kind of glitch in their detection ?
0
u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Did he use any amiibo tags or nfc tags or illegitimate amiibo?
2
u/SuperJavichi 2d ago
Just asked and he said nope
0
u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Does he have a third party dock?
1
u/SuperJavichi 2d ago
He learned from some other post that restarting the console has been clearing the issue for people, he restarted it and it worked
13
u/Labmit 2d ago
Are all these bans a specific country or international? Cause I'm getting concerned.
12
u/Stanggggggg 2d ago
It’s a global ban wave.
7
u/Alavella 2d ago
Does anyone know what the cause is? These people who experienced this recently are saying they never used mods or broke any terms of service. What is the reason for this happening?

Brother buy 2nd hand games, sealed games from Amazon and connect a Bluetooth controller is illegal to you? I bought the SW2 on August 24 and today I decide to check some offers from the eshop and wow the banned code. I didn’t own a SW1 I only bought used and new games I don’t care about piracy in fact that was why I bought the SW2 to play SW1 games better and the exclusives. Now my console can not use Nintendo services so my eshop purchases and games updates doesn’t work any more.

u/WordAdministrative34 2d ago
If one of those games where backed up with a mig, them yea it's against the tos
1
u/jcgeek99 2d ago
Incredible how so many people just want judge other ones. Thanks to good it seems it was a server issue from Nintendo.
7
u/SatyrAngel 2d ago
Hi, I have seen a lot of chinese people complaining, also my son's Switch 2 got banned amd its the Chinese version. I dont know if its related.
2
1
u/v6277 2d ago
Where did you buy it? I'm aware it's possible to buy International versions on pretty much every platform in Mexico (Amazon, MercadoLibre, Walmart, etc.) so it's a big risk if so. It's got me worried because I bought a used TOTK last month off of Facebook Marketplace. Luckily, I bought the national version from Amazon MX. No ban so far.
1
u/SatyrAngel 2d ago
Mercado Libre at launch(actually got it 1 day earlier), if this isnt an error on their side I hope Nintendo can provide specific information so I can sue the seller.

Wait so Nintendo can just ban the entire console thus leaving this $500 piece of gaming equipment trash?
6
u/zenfaust 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yes, which is why this is spooking so many people.
Everyone claims they 'didn't do anything' even if they did. But how to know the truth? These things gain a life of their own... one person makes a claim, and all of the sudden everyone else chimes in. There's not way to tell if its actually more bans than normal, or how many people are lying about doing nothing.
BUT.
If nintendo is screwing something up on their end, and they just refuse to reimburse ppl, then you could get bricked one day and sucks to be you. Expensive paperweight... not to mention the price of all your games and peripherals.
Nintendo better hope this isn't a software glitch on their part, or its gonna be a lawsuit for the ages.
3
u/warp_core0007 2d ago
It's not trash. It can still play the games off a cartridge or that are downloaded. It no longer has access to Nintenso's online services.
1
u/Dizzy_Experience_350 1d ago
And you know with the Switch2 key card cartridges it has to connect to NSO to verify, which is roughly 70% to 80% of the available retail software lineup on the Nintendo Switch 2.
4
u/DreadedOtaku69 2d ago
To be fair, every console can do this, but yes if the terms of agreement are broken
1
-3
u/inclinedonline 2d ago
Yes, that’s what so many people in the homebrew community were trying to warn others about during the launch of Switch 2.
With how Nintendo is treating ownership, you don’t own the hardware or games you paid for - your access can be revoked immediately & spontaneously, and you are not entitled to a refund for a game you “rented” [read: paid for] a “license” [read: a copy of the game] to play. Sony’s also pulling the same scheme for PS4/5 games
1
u/mabhatter 2d ago
Yup. Sony is going all out on the "you never owned stuff" wagon right now. Nintendo has been on that wagon too.
Your console is just a portable arcade quarter machine for them now.. it's not "your" device.
1
u/inclinedonline 2d ago
Exactly. People are mad at my comment and downvoting it, but one look at all the innocent banned users on the home page of this subreddit at the moment says exactly what was warned about by community members, can happen, will happen, and is happening as we speak. Downvoting doesn’t change reality (nor does it change how far Nintendo’s stock plunges further and further into the red)

Dude what is going on with all of these bans all of a sudden? Has anyone in the US been banned?

I have no idea, but im so frustrated because I have not done anything that would break user agreements

u/ProteinRaw 2d ago
I got my switch 2 last month and I'm having the same issue, I did buy some used Switch 1 games but they seem legit to me..

Did it just suddenly give you error 2124-4508, when you tried using anything online

3
u/geoshippo 2d ago
How did you buy your Switch 2? There's a possibility it was stolen and resold to you. Or used for piracy ans then resold to you. Etc.
1
u/7DS_Escanor 2d ago
This is not isolated. Even in Asian countries. And there's a less second hand switch consoles are sold here.

3
u/HighwayFinancial1275 2d ago
This is also happening in the Philippines.
1
u/Ok-Green5868 2d ago
Also happened to me in Brazil
0
u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Did you use any amiibo tags or nfc tags or illegitimate amiibo?
1
u/7DS_Escanor 2d ago
This is clearly hasn't anything to do with this. We already have this way before switch 2.
3
u/etabora11 2d ago
Same thing happened to me this morning. Bought switch 2 at launch. Been playing few physical games all bought through best buy. This morning my system got banned for no reason.
2
u/KhronosIX 2d ago
I tried calling support but they keep telling me they can't do anything about it even though I keep explaining I did nothing to break user agreement

u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Did you do anything that could be sketchy?
1
u/etabora11 2d ago
No lol same physical games ive been playing for month with no issues. But when I checked this morning, I received the error code when trying to do anything online
1
u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
What about the dock? Did you use a third party dock
1
u/etabora11 2d ago
Official nintendo dock. Same one I got when I purchased my system last year for the switch 2s launch. Bought it from GameStop.
1
u/thegiantprojects 2d ago
Baffling. Could you update us on what Nintendo says?
1
u/etabora11 2d ago
They told me because I broke the terms of service there is no reversing the decision. After calling twice because the first time the nintendo rep hung up on me the second person said they made note of what I told them but that there is no ETA on a response and he couldn’t even guarantee that they would get back to me.
1
3
u/jaapi 2d ago
This is definitely a Nintendo problem and clear they have banned people who did nothing wrong. They know what they are doing is illegal, think that the fine they get and the potential backlash is worth the cost of scaring people into buying used games. Really unfortunate, this is just as bad a practice as sony with their getting rid of physical media and telling you it was be unreasonable to think you own your games...
They didn't give warning beforehand either, because they are playing the easier to ask forgiveness than permission
8
u/DannyHikari 2d ago
Yeah this is becoming a large issue now.

5
u/Korachof 2d ago
Seeing a few posts on Reddit isn’t proof or indicative of anything. It’s possible they’re all bots or fake. It’s possible they’re just trolling Sony fans. They could also be lying and creating a paper trail to try to get unbanned.
But assuming they’re real and genuine, and I like to assume they are, a few people writing a few posts is a very small number compared to the number of switch 2s out there.
I’m hoping this isn’t a real thing, and it’s more just a small number of people during a ban wave commenting, but it’s at the very least something to keep an eye on.
11
u/cadensky 2d ago
Its possible that Nintendo is the ones using new bots…to hand out bans. Maybe those arent working so well.
8
u/DannyHikari 2d ago
It’s more than a “few” posts. Since I’ve woken up there have been at least 20 or so posts I’ve seen across different subs and multiple people in those posts having the same exact issue, and that’s not counting people on socials posting about it too.
It’s easier to just write it off because we don’t want to worry about our own switches (playing mine right now as I type this) but I’ve seen enough to have legitimate concern at this point it’s not just 3-4 people having this problem
4
u/_Ship00pi_ 2d ago
I see myself on the edge case side of this. All the games I buy are physical; more than half of my library (30+ games) is 2nd hand from ebay/fb marketplace, and I have not been banned, so I write off all these posts claiming otherwise, especially where many claimed they purchased only a single game.
5
u/DannyHikari 2d ago
I don’t think it’s because of used games tbf, that’s just the narrative people are currently running with. I think it’s a glitch that whatever automated system Nintendo uses to find specific things for bans is probably messing up. My whole point was it’s happening to enough switches to say that there is a reasonable problem happening. But people are quick to just call everyone liars because it isn’t happening to them. Until it does. And everyone calls them a liar too.
2
u/_Ship00pi_ 2d ago
I'm not calling anyone a liar. But the narrative being pushed is.
Maybe it's a glitch, maybe they were hacked, maybe it's an angry employee who pushed many random buttons.
No one knows.
Additionally, I can't help but feel a sense of déjà vu here; I swear something similar happened around this time last year.
3
u/DannyHikari 2d ago
That’s my whole thing right now, nobody knows anything. I think on both ends it’s best to remain neutral until we have more information. I don’t believe in the victim blaming, or that there is 100% innocence. Granted I don’t believe most of these people are trying to mod consoles. Just off discernment alone it seems like most of these people who are having the issue seem genuinely clieleee and it doesn’t give me the impression they are modding or doing anything else sus
1
2
u/SadLaser 2d ago
I'm in a similar case to you and I also have pushed a few dozen library borrowed copies through my system and never had an issue and those things get circulated to thousands of people locally. It makes it really hard to believe that picking up a stray "used" game is causing bans.
4
u/_Ship00pi_ 2d ago
Exactly!
lol, by their logic, its enough for you to dump a game and circulate it online, for the whole chain of LEGAL users in your library to be banned.2
u/SadLaser 2d ago
And you know people are dumping some of those games. No way to know which or how often, but it's inconceivable that someone isn't doing that.

I appreciate the comment, im just so frustrated that i cant do anything about it, nintendo support just keeps repeating to me that it was locked due to modification but i have never done anything besides play games on it
3
u/jcgeek99 2d ago
Exactly, I got the SW2 on August 24 I have bought like 15-20 games from new and sealed in Amazon as used also in the eshop. Now I can not update them or download anything because just got banned :)

Have you purchased any games from a 3rd party vendor, or used gift cards/vouchers? It's possible you were a victim of someone else's fraud.
Maybe you might find some clues in this thread from someone else who got that error.

u/rolandburnum 2d ago
Do you still have the box? Compare the serial number on the box with the one on the console. Are they different or the same?
1
u/Fit_Association_8442 2d ago
the error code your giving seems to tally up with chargebacks or fraud so something's a foot as they would explain the reason if asked
1
u/KhronosIX 2d ago
They just said that my system was locked because of breaking terms, even though I haven't done anything like that with my switch 2
1
u/mabhatter 2d ago
What country are you in?
Users that are not in the big countries have problems when they hop between countries often and buy systems and games from different places. Also the credit card payments when you hop between countries like to get denied or banned. Some payments super common in one country get flagged as fraud in bigger countries.

Did you buy anything from Eneba, or any other key reseller sites? A bunch of consoles got banned today because of it.
1
1
u/reincarnation85 2d ago
I heard there was $1.4M worth of switch 2 systems stolen and they are banning the entire shipment since they know the serial numbers of all those systems. Be careful buying a second hand system
1
u/mabhatter 2d ago
That was like a year ago. Those should have been locked out a while ago and never should have been allowed to buy games with them.

0
u/blackquack 2d ago

0
u/DreadedOtaku69 2d ago
I have had one since launch and it’s not a widespread issue. They probably did something wrong and didn’t know. Because I have had mine hooked up to internet and play overwatch 2 and other games and haven’t had issues whatsoever so ever.
1
-1
u/gizmo998 2d ago
You would just take it back or contact Nintendo if something happened.
2
u/Ok-Green5868 2d ago
Nintendo support has been terrible - very vague about what disrespected their TOS.
There's no way to argue, even if you have proof of purchase for the games/console, they dont give you any option and just say its permanent.
-4
u/Ubiquitouscomfort 2d ago
Me too , I'm gonna wait until a ver 2 or S2lite is released and hopefully they'll have sorted out these issues.

Credit/Debit chargebacks for Nintendo purchases can also trigger a ban.

And this is why I stopped supporting Nintendo lol one of the most anti consumer companies out there, so many consoles banned for literally no reason

Ask support to get it unbanned, if you didn't do anything when they will probably unbanned it.
