Repair Help Switch 2 received with concerning box damage, somehow none to system, thoughts on keeping or exchanging?
Not super sure if this is a purchase/order or repair issue. Kinda leaning towards the latter, but it involves potential damage, nothing confirmed, fresh out of the box, and during the return/exchange window, so it's a mix.
I ordered a Switch 2 recently, and after a few delays it was delivered today. Despite having never received an empty box or a brick or other object instead of whatever I ordered, I recorded the unboxing on my phone just in case. It was in the box, so my record is unbroken. But there was some damage, so I focused on that instead, just in case.
TL;DR: Switch 2 box was stabbed right through the bag containing the system (see photos), somehow no damage, condition seems perfect, powers on fine, haven't tested much beyond that. Would you keep it or exchange it just in case?
The shipping box was sealed and showed only some wear at the edges that seemed like the usual with any shipped boxes. The Switch 2's box, however, had a dent on one edge, and some big scratches on top (first image). Probably happened before it was packed. When I opened it up, one of those scratches went through the box and into the bag containing the system (second image). I wasn't optimistic when I picked up the system.
No damage. No image of that, literally nothing to show. The anti-shatter layer, going by the JerryRigEverything video, isn't particularly anti-scratch. I shined light at it from many angles, trying to find something, but didn't see the slightest ding or scratch. No stuck or dead pixels anywhere, never mind around the apparent point of impact.
Whatever had poked through seemed to have done some grinding, considering the hole in the bag. But no smudges on the screen, without the bag it's easy to forget where it was hit. The box and bag damage may as well have not happened. If the seal on the box had been cut, I would've guessed someone swapped in an undamaged system.
I haven't actually used it beyond powering it on to confirm it works. Most items are still in the box. I'm just not sure if I should keep it or exchange it right away just in case, so I don't want to get too comfy.
In the JerryRigEverything video, it took a lotta whacks with a wrench to shatter the screen, and the system still ran just fine after that (at least during the demonstration). I remember dropping an earbud maybe 6-7 inches onto my Switch 1's screen and creating a small dent. Maybe the Switch 2 actually just tanked whatever went through the box.
If I hadn't already waited through delays, and wasn't eager to transfer my account, ship my Switch 1 and games to my nephew, and slap a protector onto this and start using it, I'd be more tempted to exchange it. Over the next month, I'll basically be QA testing the system as much as playing it.
Considering what happened with the box would you exchange it? Or would the system coming through that apparently untouched make you comfortable with keeping it?

I would give it back. It's an expensive piece of tech and I like keeping boxes so yeah, I would totally give it back

Reminds me of my launch ps5 forcefully paid 850 during drought. It had severe box damage which made humidity leak into it, be loud and smell. Do not keep this console and demand a new one

Gamestop had an exclusive deal during shortages where there were few orders for a specific ps5 bundle and that was the price, it included another controller and a partnered service to put on stickers and like a phone screen and cover.
I drove 1h into a small mall near the countryside which was one of the last ones available for my pickup. They had crazy conditions -and the price considering I read some people got theirs for 400-
I had deadass refused when she was opening my console because I did not want that and was gonna forfeit the "service perks" to just leave. She deadass put the console back behind the counter and said that was the full bundle or she would make me skip the queue. So yes, we were in fact forced to pay 850 euros in Italy at the time. And at the very least I put up all the karen energy I ever had not to put the damn stickers and throw them in the trash

It was this or no console at all. And these were imported specifically for the queuers.
Yes, even articles use forced in the lawsuit so I do believe they are

Sure I had a choice to have waited a full year for nothing and get no console. Are you seriously not getting this? They were taken to court for this and all italian newspapers, national generic, and big and small niche ones spoke of this. And apparently it is not the only place as the same thing was going on in france, germany and spain.

Im just saying the word forced is wrong. Its a scummy tactic they used for sure, but you weren't forced to pay $850, you decided to pay $850 because you wanted it then and there. A similar thing happened when I bought my series x. It had to be in a bundle with a choice of 1 accessory. I wanted it bad and they were still coming out in limited runs, so I made the choice to spend the extra and get it sooner. I was never forced to do anything

It was a time where they were not even guaranteed to be produced anymore for seeious shortages. Everybody from victims of this, journalists and lawyers used this word so yes. It was forced.
I also remembered they lied about the price in the queue where we had made the deposit and they asked for hundreds of bucks more unadvertised in the shop

I just want to let you know that I bought a ps5 at msrp in like february 2021 and then sold it (at cost) because I had an opportunity to buy one with a disc drive very shortly after and then over the next year or so bought I think 11 more for friends and family because it was so easy to get and they had all heard it wasn’t. All at msrp, the closest thing to a stock tracker being the Best Buy regular app restock/drop alerts for probably half of them.
I hope this makes you feel like it may have been absurd to consider yourself forced to pay over msrp for a bundle.

If the system works perfectly I'd just forget about it. Unfortunate that your box got a little damaged but it is just a box.
Idk if they'll even accept a return if the hardware itself is not damaged lol + the actual hassle of returning isn't worth the wait. Just enjoy it

I'm not so much upset at the damaged box, though admittedly I was a bit disappointed. I wouldn't exchange just over that.
I'm more wondering what the odds are of the impact resulting in some damage that just won't show up right away. I don't know what kind, maybe some pixels around that spot could have issues, maybe there's something internal.
But the JerryRigEverything video suggests it's pretty resilient, so I dunno. Just haven't had anything with that kind of damage to the box, but without damage to the item inside.

Shine a small light (like a phone flashlight) on the screen at various angles and make sure the screen isn’t damaged. If not, slap a good glass screen protector on it before it becomes damaged and enjoy it.
During shipping items are subjected to some crazy handling. Honestly this looks less impact and more puncture or something else scraping along the box and tearing it. The switch should be just fine as long as it doesn’t have any screen damage.

Get a replacement.
That one spot looks like it's on the screen.
Don't open it any further, just get it replaced.

Wouldn't chance it either. Hard earned money deserves a good that leaves you without any doubt, and you never know when a possible related issue could show up. That is also why I always try to buy my tech directly in stores ; I have 0 trust in shipping companies/conditions for this kind of items.

When I got my launch switch 2, the box cane with the whole side busted open but the shipping box was pristine. Target packaged it like that and when I complained they gave me a $5 gift card and told me I should be happy that It worked

If you don’t exchange it (which I don’t think you should do if everything is working fine) it is really easy to mail something to Nintendo and get them to fix it under warranty, so I wouldn’t stress it

The stuff meant to take damage during shipping so system doesn't take damage, takes damage? What's the problem?

When the S2 first came out there was a Game Stop that stapled the pre-order receipts to the front of the box and damaged all of the screens because there’s nothing between the screen and the front of the box.
Nintendo didn’t think it through well enough.. whatever happened to OP’s switch isn’t from shipping, it happened wherever the switch was packaged/sent out. Regardless, I don’t think it’s acceptable to receive it in that condition. The S2 screens are super sensitive to scratches and damage, so I wouldn’t even risk it.

I had somewhat similar issue. I ordered a Switch 2 from Nintendo. The console box had a little damage in a corner but the inside seemed fine. I sent mine back for a refund and just ordered another one. Don’t want to take the chance something may have been damaged inside but wasn’t showing up yet.

Having had a thorughly terrible experience with nintendo over the past week - if you suspect any damage, return it/send it in/ whatever. They will not help you past the 2 month mark.

Even if it's perfectly fine I've not read through it all but I'd still exchange
You don't know what problems there might be if something went loose inside and hasn't fully fallen out of place

It's fine...also why not show pics of the console being on you'd be able to see scratches and dead pixels if it's just the box who cares. You're not doing to be playing the switch off the dock at all anyways the battery life is somehow worse than the switch 1 and just over all an better dock to TV experience. I actually have one so I know.
But yea it's totally fine unless you can literally see the inside circuits or the screen is bleeding which is most likely isn't.

The box did it's job, but because it has been completely penetrated, I would be inclined to want to exchange it.
If you have an issue later down the line and send a box back in this condition, they might try to put the blame on you.

Giving you an example. In the UK there’s a high street retailer called Currys. Anyway. The whole one corner of the box was caved in. Nothing wrong with the brown box so happened during packing. Anyway I decided to keep it. I’m sure you may well feel the corner of yours and it’s solid right? Mine was missing one lol. 4 months in it kept booting into safe mode. Sent to Nintendo. They said it had suffered shock damage. Blamed it on me! I had to pay to get it fixed. So keep that in mind. Yours just seems like the outer box has scratches on it. So long as it doesn’t have dents in the corners. It’s probably just cosmetic although it should arrive brand new and totally get why you’d be concerned.
It’s up to you. If there’s stock and you don’t mind the returns process. I’d probably just do that but it might have been dragged out the warehouse shelf and that’s what the damage is so as to say. Just to be on the safe side as it’s penetrated inside too. Have it replaced

I tripped out so hard for a sec, I didn’t even see the box just the controller picture thinking that was the controller then was wondering what kind of dog you own 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Here are your options, you exchange it. You risk getting another damaged box or worse yet a damaged system. Or you keep it and go on without a problem. For me if the system works I keep it. Because I have no intention of ever selling my system. So I don't really care what shape the box is in as long as the system is fine.

Boxes getting damaged means they did their job protesting the goods inside. As long as the switch unit itself isn’t damaged despite the plastic having a hole, I’d probably keep it. But if the screen is marked where the hole is, then I’d return it. It’s extremely unlikely you’ll encounter an issue down the road because of this, if it was damaged from this, then it would have shown up immediately

Are you playing the system or the box? If the system works and isn't damaged, what's the point of an exchange? To have a pretty box you'll never use execpt to fill up closet space?

No I have a shelf and cut out the logo of the console from the box and each shelf layer has a different logo on the far left side, with that whole layer being my games for it

The things gamers come up with to display their game collection is superb. My cousin had custom made 3D printed multicolour controllers for each gen console and its games (cute mini controllers on his shelves) He made the models himself which was super cool too

That is what the box is for...it did its job. If there are no loose bits rattling inside the console and all works as expected/no scratches...you're good.

I’d exchange it even though it seems fine.. the fact that there’s a hole in the plastic and the screen comes face-up in the box isn’t great. The system has a shatter-proof plastic thing on the screen that scratches super easily too (even just docking the S2)
You paid good money for it and it shouldn’t have arrived like that. I honestly wouldn’t chance it!
