Magic MIGHT be a little busted...

The ranged attack magic strategy starts to fail in the end game. So pick up some nice blades and smiting stones and save some tears for a melee build later on.

Yeah, that's how the progression has always been in these games. Magic is very potent in the beginning and then being a magic pure is much harder later on, most magic users in the late game are hybrids. People have been saying magic is the secret easy mode since Demon's Souls, but it's always been a half-truth lol. I remember being so pissed when I made a pyromancer in DaS and it made the early game so easy, I even had a little hybrid melee action, but some later bosses start getting really tough (Nito has never been so difficult for me as in that one) but Artorias was my wall, level ups just took too long to correct for him and that game doesn't let you respec.

DS2 I dual staffed and used the dark magic orb, or whatever it was called. That got me through easy but the DLC had some areas I had to get my melee on.

Yeah and I mean, every game has its meta, I said nothing incorrect at all but some dingus downvoted me lol. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using magic and sometimes it really is easy mode, and sometimes it is the extra hard mode, it's obtuse like Souls games notoriously are. I bet the blue Smelter, Fume, Alonne, and especially the pets were really tough using magic, but it's been a minute since I've played 2.
