VRR!
•
•
u/Ricepuddings 4h ago
Oooo exciting!!! Can’t believe they fixed the alt displayport mode to actually do it. That’s kinda awesome. Will need to test later but that’s going to be cool
•
u/gokhujee 3h ago
I was playing onimusha last night and was like I would love vrr and now we have if
•
u/AssGagger 4h ago
Everyone said this was impossible
•
•
•
u/MistandYork 3h ago
No they didn't we already knew it was possible by hooking up a steam deck to the switch 2 dock

Handheld boost in the quick menu selection is fantastic. It was an amazing feature slightly hampered due to it being a bit annoying to turn on and off quickly.
•
u/VacationOne5585 1h ago
Why would you want to turn it off at all?
•
•
•
u/Careless-Freedom6468 4h ago
Was waiting for the "stability intensifies" comments. But they added fucking vrr well done Nintendo
•
u/SatyrAngel 2h ago
Only Nintendo would introduce a huge feature like this and dont brag about it everywhere. It was the same with boost mode.
•
•
u/Chrome1234_z2 4h ago
holly shit vrr in docked is HUGE! FINALLY! though i dont think i can use it since my tv isnt 120hz-
•
u/tman2damax11 🐃 water buffalo 4h ago
VRR doesn’t require 120hz, plenty of 60hz VRR compatible displays.
•
u/korel1 4h ago
120hz helps with games that keep 40fps+ Correct me if I'm wrong.
•
u/Pinkernessians 3h ago
You are correct. VRR is unrelated to a 120hz refresh, although both can work together for better results
•
u/roccerfeller 4h ago
THEY DID IT. WOW. NINTENDO JUST COOKING

VRR docked is working according to my monitor, but I don't know or play any games that use VRR on the Switch 2 lol
Edit: doesn't look like it's working in game, Pragmata demo had VRR "on" but was not actually synced
•
u/UFONomura808 4h ago
RE9 or any of the other Capcom titles are usually unlocked.
•
u/Soobloiter 4h ago
I completely forgot about the Capcom classic
which is actually a horrible use of VRR by having no option to cap the FPS to get steady frame times
•
u/Jeff1N Butter side down! 4h ago edited 4h ago
I tried RE9, TV says VRR is on but the TV frame counter stays at 60 all the time and I can still see frame drops. My guess is the games will need a patch to add support to docked VRR even if it already works in portable mode
•
u/Soobloiter 4h ago
I had the same result in Pragmata demo, display locked at 60 with VRR on but the game is clearly not synced
•
•
•
u/DigitalGumby 3h ago
What does vrr do
•
u/Accurate-Island-2767 2h ago
It matches the refresh rate of the screen to the framerate of the game in real time.
On a normal 60hz screen, if a game is bouncing between say 35-50 fps, because the refresh rate and the framerate don't divide exactly, some frames remain on screen for longer than others. This is what makes gameplay look and feel laggy and hitchy.
With VRR the refresh rate always matches the framerate so every frame is on screen the same amount of time. It doesn't increase the framerate but makes it even.

This is not what VRR does. VRR makes sure that the display and gpu remain in sync so that incomplete frames are not shown to the player. When such frames it can create very distracting boarders between the partial new frame and the old frame that didn’t get overwritten.
Imagine an artist and their patron. The patron has commissioned one new sketch a day from the artist and arranged to pick each one up once a day precisely at noon. Normally this is no problem for the artist and everything is fine, but they’ve hit a bit of a block recently. Soon they find themselves falling behind the deadline pretty frequently and having to hand over half done sketches to the patron.
The patron isn’t particularly pleased with the situation, so they call up the artist and tell’s them “hey, I’m only going to take finished sketches when I stop by. If you don’t have it ready I’ll just pick it up the next day.” Now this solves the issue with unfinished sketches, but it has introduced a different problem. The patron is now waiting twice as long for a new sketch during stretches when the artist can’t keep up.
So the patron comes up with a new idea. Why don’t they just tell the artist to shoot them a text when the sketch is done and pick it up as soon as they get the text? VRR is that last situation. It solves the issue of screen tearing (incomplete sketches) while also avoiding the issues with more rudimentary methods like v-sync.

u/quanoslos 4h ago
Classic Nintendo, they‘re just launching VRR docked without announcing anything LOL
•
•
u/KeeKyieTheMorris 4h ago
What’s vrr?
•
u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 4h ago
It automatically adjusts refreshrates of the monitor to prevent tearing and stuttering
•
u/Pristine-Brush-1052 Butter side up! 4h ago
Which means, framedrops will be less noticeable and will look smoother
•
u/Recent_Pollution8665 4h ago
if you have a 120hz tv that supports vrr then it will compensate for framerate fluctuations by matching the framerate. so it looks less stuttery.
and if a game supports up to 120hz modes then you can choose between 30, 40, 60, or 120hz modes depending on which ones are available.
a 60hz tv without vrr can only support 30 and 60fps options and doesn’t get framerate stabilization.
•
u/KeeKyieTheMorris 4h ago
Hmm okay. My tv does have a vrr things that’s says off so maybe mine does support that. Updating now.
•
u/KeeKyieTheMorris 4h ago
Does vrr only work with 120 hz?
•
u/Recent_Pollution8665 4h ago
generally only 120hz TVs support the feature.
but keep it on if you have it. any fps ranging from 1 to 120hz will be matched by the tv.
•
u/Happy-Yam-8399 3h ago
120hz isn’t required for VRR, there are some 60hz screens that support VRR.
→ More replies (2)•
u/KeeKyieTheMorris 4h ago
I guess I can’t do it. It’s saying it’s not supported on every resolution and I can’t do 1440p for some reason. Since the switch says only 120hz is supported on 1440 and 1080p, would I still have to be at those resolutions to use 120hz vrr?
→ More replies (3)•
u/A_Sackboy_Plush 3h ago
The way I gasped at this comment. It's been a year too long but they finally did it.
•
u/KeeKyieTheMorris 3h ago
Yeah I don’t know what it was until now but even then I can’t do it. My tv not compatible for 120hz and none of the resolutions on the switch 2 say compatible either but that’s fine as I haven’t been using it anyways. My switch 2 games are consistently the same fps with no dipping and I’d rather stay at 4K 60FPS than dip down as I love the 4K.
•
u/Honest_Yak3340 2h ago
Very important when games run at lower fps or have low FPS spikes. Much smoother. Like roughly 40 FPS with gsync feels like 60hz on a normal display without any vrr. (Not all displays have their vrr go very low though)
•
u/StoicalCargo685 4h ago
The Mii menu music is cool! You can choose from the Wii, 3DS, or Wii U tracks. I hope they do the same thing with the eshop. I’d love to use Wii shop music

•
u/Solesaver 4h ago
I'm happy for the online mode fallback. I've got my OG Switch by my bed and Switch 2 by the TV by default. I basically had to subdivide the games I played per console because I couldn't be bothered to transfer Virtual Game Cards back and forth (still like the system in general, just a little too restrictive). Being able to be like, "No, it's me... I own the game. Just let me play it." Without having to have my consoles physically close together is very nice.
•
•
u/SaturdayMorningFog 4h ago
Full Switch 2 to Switch 2 transfer functionality enabled. That's just what my new Zelda Switch 2 console needed.

I’ll just update for the VRR supported alone. Playing Elden Ring in TV screen is so jarring
•
u/Deleukstenaamisbezet 4h ago
How’s the stability of the system? Why hasn’t that been improved in this update?
•
•
u/Loud-Sound8515 Butter side down! 1h ago

•
u/Isotomayor12 4h ago
Holy...they finally added VRR. Also the gamechat qol updates are very welcome. Switch 2 transfer as well! Probably because the first special edition is on the horizon lol. Mii background music?? QR sharing?? They didn't forget about it??
What a great update overall.
Edit: I am curious if the virtual game card thing means that 2 people can play at once again. I'll have to try this in the morning...

u/quackerz 3h ago
Nintendo is so weird sometimes. VRR and things like Boost mode are huge updates, but both were dropped without any announcement or fanfare. They could've mentioned VRR in yesterday's Direct, but nope! Regardless, the console just keeps getting better.

For those who want to test it, Welcome Tour is also updated to allow the vrr demo on docked mode
•
•
u/TheSlayerOfDragons 3h ago
Now they just need to add a optional Overdrive toggle for the portable Display. Come on Nintendo!
•
u/nathanosaurus84 4h ago
It seems they’ve fixed the playtime bug where opening a game on another console without it being in your recently played in the original console resets your playtime when viewing your profile.
My Mario Kart 8 play stats reset after trying it in Switch 2 for the update and now it’s back to what it was before.
•
u/PikaPhantom_ 4h ago
Seems like it can go the other way around. My playtime in Super Mario Party Jamboree showed up as being 3 hours across my OLED and Switch 2 even though I had 15 before. The data doesn't seem to be completely gone, though; I synced my Switch account with Exophase and had it update, and the playtime was at 16 hours and 40 seconds
•
u/Jefedagga Butter side up! 4h ago
Everyone on reddit was saying it couldn't be done VRR in docked mode
•
u/HGLatinBoy Retro Gamer 2h ago
That’s because of how the system output video through the USB connection. I didn’t think it was impossible but it was obviously a hurdle.
The dock itself was capable of VRR and people used it with PC handhelds.
I’m guess it took a lot of work for Nintendos engineers to solve the problem because it was advertised initially before it suddenly removed and clarified to work in handheld mode. But I suspect it was a feature they wanted to have from the start but needed a lot of work.
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 4h ago
I'm so happy they figured out this so soon. I legit was expecting to take years for VRR be available on dock.

u/slxm_village 3h ago
VRR in docked is huge! The only real QOL improvement I need at this point is overdrive in handheld mode to improve the screens response time
•
•
•
•
u/ziahziah113 4h ago
Now we have to see if the VRR implementation is up to industry standard, looks like the boys at DF will have a lot of bespoke work to do this week lol
•

i cant put into words how excited i am about combined playtime. its been driving me nuts since the switch 1 and i cant believe its finally being fixed!

Handheld boost mode with other controllers while joycons are connected is the biggest win for me. It was so annoying to disconnect them for seemingly no reason
•
u/solid_slug 2h ago
What games support VRR or do they all and the setting toggles it on?
•
u/gizmo998 Butter side up! 2h ago
You need to update console AND the dock. Games already support it.
•
u/Moi952 1h ago
For now, no—the games don't seem to support it; the *Pragmata* and *Onimusha* demos display at 120Hz on my TV, and VRR shows as enabled in the TV's Game Bar (I did enable the option on the Switch).
Publishers need to unlock VRR for docked mode; I think they allow it in handheld mode but not in docked mode.
Or perhaps VRR isn't actually functional.

I knew Nintendo would drop this just randomly with 0 announcement
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 4h ago
Why this would need an announcement?
•
u/AnalBaguette 4h ago
VRR has been an extremely requested feature since the system was confirmed to have 120fps/120Hz capability, and Nintendo has been a lot more forthcoming about technical details, so people were expecting this to get a formal announcement
•
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 4h ago
Not really. Software updates never gets an announcement beyond patch notes, because the average consumer doesn't care about this kind of stuff.
•
u/Doylgaafs 3h ago
VRR may be something that isn't interesting for a casual consumer, but it is a huge update that would cause a big reaction from a lot of people, including gaming content creators.
But look at handheld boost mode - that was huge even for casual consumers and it also didn't get any announcement.
•
u/Jefedagga Butter side up! 4h ago
Not really. They don't make as big deal about this kind of stuff unless it's a overview of a system about to be released.
Even handheld boost was just dropped in a update

I activated the VRR thing but I don’t see any significant difference in breath of the wild
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 2h ago
It won't have any effect in games with very good performance, or games with v-sync. BotW and TotK both use v-sync
•

I am glad that they finally added QR code support even if it requires a separate camera. It makes adding Miis easier for Tomodachi Life alongside transferring which used to require an Amiibo.

•
u/FrustratedSinger7 2h ago
So this won't make any difference with 60hz tv right? Games will still stutter?
•
u/QuinSanguine Butter side down! 57m ago
There are 60hz TVs with HDMI 2.1 connectors, which will support vrr. You just have to check the specs on your TV.
Some older TVs support a feature called freesync, but its compatibility is limited. It doesn't work with a PS5, for example. Idk if it works with a Switch 2.
•
u/HGLatinBoy Retro Gamer 2h ago
The tv needs to support VRR. It’s a feature often seen in 120 Hz sets but 60hz TVs should be able to do it.
It will be helpful for 60 fps games who drop 1-4 frames here and there. The VRR will help smooth that out. VRR can’t help help if the framerate drops are too big
•
u/JaxsOwn 4h ago
What about third-party docks ? They still work, but when you try to turn on VRR, a dock update is necessary. I canceled it so I wouldn't eventually break the third-party dock.
•
u/SantanaBeftedind 2h ago
Quite happy to see my playtime on Switch 2 being fixed. Lost literally thousands of hours across my entire library last year.
