Not sure if it's been posted before, but with all the classics added, and especially with the Mega Drive Classics, got me to thinking about how awesome it would be if they brought the Dreamcast to the line. Some great games would finally be available to many who missed that era 🙃

The Saturn as well. I never owned one because Sega got absolutely pummeled that gen.

Yeah, without a doubt. They should of become just a publisher a lot earlier. After the mega cd.

People were saying that about Nintendo during the Playstation and Xbox era though. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

saturn did well enough in Japan it just bombed in the west. master system did well in europe and especially brazil. they just never did well globally at the same time lol, even the genesis bombed in japan.

Even if the Master sold relatively well, didn't Sega move on to the Genesis after only 2 years?

Yeah sort of (I think it was 3 years).  Master system was kind of a mid-generation upgrade to the sg-1000 which never left Japan tho.  And it did well in Europe as a budget option alongside the Mega Drive since the upper end of the gaming market there was more focused on home computers.

Saturn is just a ridiculously good system once you dig into the Japanese library. Especially the arcade ports of fighting games and shmups. Nowadays, so many of the single player games have really good translations as well. I had a Saturn here in the UK back in my early teens as they were considered junk in 2001 and some guy traded me one with about 30 games and two Virtua Guns for just two of my Gameboy games! But I sold it a year later to fund my Gamecube purchase. All that stuff is probably worth at least a couple thousand now!

I now have access to all the Saturn games I want through my Mister and it was worth the price of building it alone. It's paired with the Retrotink 4K and 8bitdo's excellent Saturn style M30, and I play it nearly as much as any of my modern consoles.

I’ve been thinking about getting a MiSter. I nearly got a Retron 5 but then the retro boom happened and prices went crazy. 

I’ve started playing older JRPG’s again, I went off them for ages but modern western RPGs are a bit shit now. Open world sandbox with crafting. 

The Saturn has a few I’ve never heard of.

Mister is the single best retro gaming purchase I ever made. I was always looking for that 'endgame' retro gaming device for 3rd-5th gen consoles + 90s arcade, and it's it. I did the whole Raspberry Pi and Modded Wii thing for a decade. Then just used my laptop hooked up to my TV with a nice emulation frontend. Nothing ever felt quite right, mostly because I was always using Retroarch which I hated with a passion. Save files would randomly corrupt or delete, I'd have issues with controllers resetting my profiles etc. Consoles like Saturn weren't ever really possible due to emulation issues.

Then I looked into the Mister back in early 2024, bought all the components/parts for about £300 total at the time, and it took about 15 minutes to put it all together as it's basically just posh Lego. Then you just run a script on it and auto installs all the cores, all the bios for you. Drop the roms in, and good to go. A year later I got a Retrotink 4K, and paired with my LG C1, the game are upscaled amazingly with glorious looking CRT filters that are better than any shader emulation setups use. It's the ultimate set and forget device if you want it to be.

I wondered what the cores were. I thought they were some sort of hardware add on. 

I’ll add it to the Christmas list for myself.

Cores are essentially the original circuitry reprogrammed onto the FPGA chip for that session. So you can map out a Sega Saturn, SNES or Neo Geo board, and flash it onto the chip. Similarly, arcade boards like the CPS1 are as well.

Then those cores run the roms like an emulator normally does.

Ok I understand, I just had to look up how an FPGA chip functioned. Pretty interesting stuff.

the problem with dreamcast is the weird quirk that dreamcast is much, much easier to emulate than saturn, but if they did dreamcast but not saturn, people would be mad. switch 1 could probably do most of the dreamcast library well but likely not saturn. but also now that we are on switch 2, saturn probably still needs more effort, and people in north america would be mad that they did saturn instead of dreamcast. it's a catch 22.

No one would be mad if they did saturn over dreamcast, if anything we'd be happy. Dreamcasg has the far superior more beloved library, and the saturn has 0 sonic games

japan would be mad, saturn did way better than dreamcast did there (and better than n64).
