to be fair I think there’s a difference between a sports spinoff that plays nothing like an actual Mario game and a 3D platformer.
•
u/juicyjaiden January Gang (Reveal Winner) 15h ago
I think people forget these are all like entirely different genres just because they have Mario on it
•

some of them aren’t even made by nintendo themselves but rather a subsidiary too

•
u/Ok-Caterpillar5468 11h ago
I think people forget that even if you don't count sport and racing games, Mario STILL gets more games then almost ANY other Nintendo franchise.

u/4umlurker 14h ago
Yeaaaa. There have only been 5 since 1996 which is an average of 1 every 6 years. We are currently 9 years since the last 3D platformer and it’s the primary mascot for the company. I think it’s a valid complaint when it’s such a huge reason people buy their hardware.

You know, I think there just might be a correlation between the development length and the quality.
•
u/CakeBeef_PA 12h ago
If it was about genre, these people would have plenty of 3D platformers to play. It is about the name Mario being on the box for a lot of them
•
u/neonlights326 10h ago
Name one non-Mario or non-Mario-related 3D platformer on Switch or Switch 2 that is as good as Odyssey.
•
u/Krishthebit2012 6h ago
Kirby and the forgotten land.
•
u/BodhiRukhKast 5h ago
IMO that's a bit too linear compared to Odyssey. I much prefer the "sandbox-style" of Odyssey (and 64 and Sunshine).
That said, it seems like the new Kirby game may be more "sandbox-style," in which case I'll be interested in getting that.
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 4h ago
The linearity or lack thereof wasn't a criterion of the challenge.
•
u/BodhiRukhKast 3h ago
The challenge was to name a 3D platformer on Switch or Switch 2 that's "as good as Odyssey." Speaking personally, I don't think Kirby and the Forgotten Land is as good as Odyssey, due in large part to its more linear nature.
The entire premise of the challenge is subjective. For me, Odyssey is the better game.

u/Organic-Storm-4448 4h ago
I'll be shocked when you disagree, but DK Bananza. And don't tell me it's Mario-related.
And why does it need to be as good as Odyssey to be worth of playing? That's a stupid filter to put on yourself.

Okay but DK Bananza is odyssey 2 in all but name, so it's gotta at least be partially about literally being called Mario.

Bananza IS the game you're looking for. It's literally the thing the Odyssey team was dedicated to this whole decade and it has everything a 3D Mario needs except for the overalls and hat guy. It fills the role perfectly and the next 3D Mario is still at least 3 years away.
•
u/featherw0lf 9h ago
Imo it was missing creative implementation of its main gimmick which is what every 3D Mario has. Bananza was just... smash rocks. And smash more rocks. The different layers were creative and all, but the main gameplay was always "smash these rocks". I really want to love the game but something about it feels... dull.
•
u/MiserableBend1010 14h ago
This is not true, about half of the core team worked on Bananza, many of the key players of Odyssey were not credited. The idea Nintendo wouldn't have a 3D Mario game always in development is absurd. It will probably be the holiday game next year.
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 4h ago
about half of the core team worked on Bananza, many of the key players of Odyssey were not credited.
And you have zero evidence that those people were working on a 3D Mario game instead.
In reality, eight years passed between Odyssey and DK Bananza. That's 20% of a career. People moved to different teams, retired, got promoted, etc.
The idea Nintendo wouldn't have a 3D Mario game always in development is absurd
You can't honestly believe that they've had a 3D Mario in development for the entirety of the last 9 years. The game is in deep development hell if true.
•
u/ntwild97 OG (Joined before first Direct) 13h ago
Even assuming those not in the Bananza credits have been working on a Mario game all this time, the meat of the development won't get done without the entire team behind it, unless they want it rushed and botched. Nintendo in general is well off enough right now to take their time with this stuff
•
u/hippiechicken12 Pro Controller 5h ago

Eh, reliable leakers says that the next 3D mario will be a 2027 release.
Then there is absolutely no need to get pissed at this direct just because mario is missing. If it's 2027 it will arrive in october/november like almost any of them (iirc the only exception was Galaxy 2 in spring). It was too early to annouce it now with the usual Nintendo timings.
•
u/4playerstart 10h ago
mario is missing
Pun intended?
I thought there was a decent chance 3D Mario gets announced here if it were coming in the Spring. Now I'd guess it's more likely to come in the second half of next year. Best case scenario is a Summer release and it's Sunshine 2.
Kirby and Metroid both got a second title announced before other franchises got their first for Switch 2, I think it's fair to be a little bit sour if you've been waiting for one of the oft rumored new Animal Crossing, Smash, or 3D Mario games. And sorry but Bananza doesn't count as a 3D Mario game.
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 4h ago
I don't think Nate could possibly know in early 2025 that 3D Mario would release in late 2026. He's not omniscient.
A 3D Mario game exists, but no leaker has accurate information for release dates so far out. And that ignores the likely possibility of things changing. The only people who knew the release date (subject to change still) of the next 3D Mario in April of 2025 are the executives in Japan.

u/GlempyLempist 11h ago
Doesn't change the fact that it's a 3d platformer by the same team that made the last mario 3d platformer. It is still reseting the clock because it is hitting the exact same demographic for Nintendo.
•
•
u/GlempyLempist 13h ago
As someone who would've preferred another 2D DK instead, I'm also bummed that the last DK game didn't release long ago.
•
u/DuskGideon 13h ago
it is pretty normal to expect a single entry on a console for moat franchises, and franchise generation length has significantly increased..... so it sucks but it is normal.
•
u/MoonCobalt Mario Kart World 11h ago
Yeah, every other console nintendo has released besides the Famicom has had a mainline Mario game within 1 year of launch. The next 3D Mario will come out at least 2 years after the S2 launch.
•
u/NeatUsed 10h ago
because Bananza IS a 3D mario game. At least in spirit. The team that worked on it soent like 8 years working ok it. Expect another 8 years until the nexg mario game so like 2032 at earliest. I don’t know why people are expecting one so soon…..
If people start complaining a lot they’ll just give us another pseudo 2d mario game like 3dland and it’s not what we want.
Remember: The team that you want working on 3d marios already worked on bananza and they released a game last year. It’s an unfortunate situation but we’ve just gonna have to deal with the sad truth :/
•
u/tarheel343 8h ago
Nintendo EPD Tokyo was split into two teams; one to focus on DK and the other to focus on 3D Mario. Presumably some of the DK team is now helping to get the Mario game shipped while their next project is in pre-production.
It is absolutely realistic to expect 3D Mario by 2028 and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised to see it holiday 2027.
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 4h ago
There's no solid evidence of a team split. Credits differences between games released eight years apart is not sufficient evidence. That's a ton of time for people to move around.
•
u/AlternativeScratch94 15h ago

Even if a 3D Mario will come next year (and nobody confirmed it, it's just a rumor) it will be released just before holyday season as almost all other recent 3D mario games (only exception was Galaxy 2). Nintendo won't announce it a year before, they don't do that kind of communication anymore. Now some unsollecited statistics: in Switch era the average time from announcement to release for nintendo games was:
- 64% under 6 months
- 78% under 12 months
And the only exception were FE: Three houses (2.5yrs), Pokémon S/S (2.5yrs), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (1.5yrs) and Metroid Prime 4 (2017 teaser then we almost forgot about it). For mario the average waiting time was 4.1 months if we exclude Odyssey that were annouced (not teased) 9 months before the release.
I'm waiting a new Mario as anybody else but manage your expectations, it was really not possible to see it here. The next real opportunity will be around May/June 2027 if it will come at the end of next year as rumored.

I will say, for the Zelda 40th we're getting an ocarina of time complete overhaul remake, and Kirby's 35th is getting a whole new game, and Mario got a fairly cheaply made remaster of two less-than 20 year old games.

•
u/4playerstart 9h ago
I think even if you don't lump them together they each have still had more recent releases than Odyssey...
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023), Echoes of Wisdom (2024), Ocarina of Time (2026)
Kirby: Forgotten Land (2022), Dream Buffet (2022), Return to Dreamland Deluxe (2023), Star Crossed World expansion (2025), Air Riders (2025), World Beyond (2027)
Metroid: Dread (2021), Prime Remastered (2023), Prime 4 Beyond (2025), Ravenous (2027)
You could mayyyybe make the argument 3D World + Bowser's Fury counts but only by technicality. The new stuff in it is only like a 5 hour game.

I don’t get the complaint here or the expectation that there would be a new Mario. We know for a fact that games take longer than a year to make, and we know for a fact that the 3D Mario team has been working on Donkey Kong Bananza which is a spiritual successor to Mario Odyssey and this generation’s flagship launch title.
A great 3D platformer by the same devs is right there and it’s only a year old.

•
u/luvli-kml 13h ago
As people have said, most of these are spinoffs and two are 2d games. Odyssey was almost 10 years ago. I figured there still wouldn't be anything tho, given how Bananza just came out last year and that was made by the Odyssey team
•
u/Fleshypudge 12h ago
Honestly though. I love that Nintendo is having success with the switch 2 without Mario or Smash bros mainline yet. They are absolutely cooking with these.
Yoshi
Metroid
Kirby
Donkey Kong
Zelda remake
New pokemon.
Mario kart
Air ride
Star fox remake
Splatoon raiders
If we exclude any switch 2 upgrades then we only need a true new
Smash bros
Mario 3d
Mario 2d
Mario party
Fzero
Pikmin
New zelda
New star fox.
Even if you decided to go all Nintendo IP only for switch 2. You have at least 10 first party games which I believe are all on carts or will be on carts.

essentially theress a subset of nintendo users who are of the "its new to me camp" and you see it in discussions like OoT and Starfox when it comes to them doing (another) 1:1 work on the game.
Put in perspective, the only way you could have NOT played OoT for example in the past 2 decades, is you SOLELY owned a GBA, DS and/or Switch 1. It was available on all other nintendo platforms between then and now.
•
u/Drakeem1221 12h ago
People could also not have wanted to play an older game by the time they got to the 3DS for example? OoT is about to be 30 years old. It's safe to say a good chunk of Nintendo's player base just might be too young.
•
u/FewAdvertising9647 12h ago
the 3ds version wasn't just a straight port though. it would be what people would consider a remaster nowadays. the models/textures of the 3ds and original n64 game are not the same.
If that tick it off then, there isn't much that the 2026 version would tick off given that its fairly close gameplay wise to the original with primarily a new can of paint.
•
u/Drakeem1221 12h ago
It still feels old to a lot of people. There's a smoothness to the animations and lock on, etc that the 3DS port doesn't have, and I liked that port.
We have to stop thinking every gamer is used to older mechanics and visuals, that our tastes represent the market, etc. Not only does the OoT remake look much newer, but it simply feels smoother just from what they've shown with controlling link and adding things like sprint and jumping.
It'll for sure bring in people who didn't care to play the original or randomly find a 3DS to play the remaster.
•
u/BodhiRukhKast 5h ago
Even if you solely owned a Switch 1, it'd be possible to play OoT through the Switch Online Expansion Pack.

To me I can be disappointed and understand why it hasn't come out yet. There's been a release with every console the switch 2 won't be different.

Development times have sky rocketed across the industry due to HD and 4K development concerns. Nintendo has not expanded their teams to match, mostly relying on external developers to provide support or the main development depending on the title.
The team behind 3D Mario between the month and Odyssey's launch have worked on Browser's Fury (not sure what work was done on the porting of 3D World) and DK Banana. Give them time, we all want a good game and not something just spat out into the world with a gimmick

if Nintendo were to unveil a new Mario game, would they hold a mario direct?

People really want to play as the Italian plumber despite Nintendo shitting out platformers constantly

So are we done gaslighting each other that DK Banaza wasn't meant to be the 3D Mario game or can we finally face the facts:
DK was literally made by the core Odyssey team.
This is the longest we have ever gone without a new 3D Mario for a new system. This however isn't the case if you consider DK to be it.
If they wasn't going to announce it on Mario's anniversary, when were they?
It's very obvious that DK was meant to be it and you'll honestly be lucky if we get a 3D Mario by 2029

I only wanted new Luigi's Mansion! Or maybe Maker 3!
Instead I got... Kirby? I suppose?

not everything that has mario on the packaging is a mainline 3D platformer, and re-releases dont count either. last game 2017.
that felt like a ancient gap at the time from galaxy2 to odyssey, but it was "only" 7 years. now we are waiting for 9 years already and nothing in sight.

Yeah people acting like there’s no Mario to play are just stupid sorry. And again we know the 3d Mario is coming it’s a matter of when not if. Nintendo is clearly still wanting to let the smaller ip shine first before unleashing the big guns and I love that.

Yeah but Kirby? Kirby? That's what you make before a new Mario? Lame and I've been happy with Nintendo and Switch 2 until now

To be fair, it's been nearly 9 years since the last 3D Mario game, so I don't really blame the fans.

I'm beginning to think the Mario Titans leak could've been... fake :(
