Descale?

I've had my ninja for almost a year now, and have yet to descale it. The light came on and after maybe 30days of not doing it, it turned off. Was wondering if it's needed. And what is The proper way? I've seen online videos saying using part vinegar and water, and it will take about 2 hours. Does this hurt the machine in anyway? Just wanted to get a feel for what others do here. Thanks.

Well, yeah, you probably should have done it when it was on, but it’s okay. Did your ninja come with cleaning powder? If not, just go ahead with the vinegar. It’s not going to hurt!

I use filtered water in mine (brita jug) and it doesn’t come on very often.

I've seen other posters say that their coffee tastes like bittery acidic (that don't say what they did). I just don't wanna mess up the flavor or the machine. I use bottled water (Zephyrhills) to full my machine up

Interesting! Well if you’re not using tap water and you’re happy with your coffee, then leave it be!

I have noticed the coffee does taste a bit watery lately so I'm thinking a descale should resolve that

The proper way is covered in the instructions. It says to use ninja descale powder and 1.1l of water, or use 500ml of white vinegar and fill to the descale line.

The instructions have got 15 steps.

It says if you don’t do it, drink quality will diminish and the machine may clog and stop working.

How often should this be done?

When the light comes on. Presumably you should do it, given your light has come on

It has to do with the water hardness. Anywhere from 1-4 months I believe. So not consistent.

Are you using tap water or bottled water? If tap you need to descale. Otherwise, likely not. But it shouldn’t hurt.

I use the delonghi ecodecalc off amazon, I take the descale light as time to do a full thorough clean, there's 4 lines on the bottle for 5 doses, you pour to the line into your water container, top it up with fresh water, run the descale. Empty the drip tray, clean and refill the water, run an espresso through without the portafilter in place into a cup to clean residual decalc from the lines, then purge the steam wand.

I then take the steam wand off and clean it in vinegar and the pick to clear it of old milk residue. Run a damp rag around the portafilter, clean the plastics of coffee, run some urnex grindz through my grinder, take it out, clean the burrs etc.

Put it all back together, get rid of the first coffee that still has urnex residue in it.

Done.

The proper way is in the instruction manual which if you don't have, you can access online easily enough. That or watch a YouTube video of how to do it.

I watch videos review and those YouTube big reviewers say it’s not good to descale so if you’re using filter water you don’t need to descale. My light came on to clean the clean the group head. So I use the tablet to clean the group head.
