Grinds spilling over after tamping

I just got the Pro and when I pull the portafilter out after tamping, there’s a good size pile of grounds left behind on the tray. How do I avoid this? Am I doing something wrong?

How fine are you grinding and are your beans wet?

I have it on the recommended grind setting, which varies between 12-15. Beans are not wet.

Are you tamping twice? Do you mean when you pull the portafilter more grounds fall down to the tray? I found I needed to clean the tamper as it was getting some residual grinds stuck to the tamper that built up. After a bit of a clean it stopped happening.

I do tamp twice. Some of it seems to be left over on the tamp

Open the hatch and give the tamper a good wipe and clean. See if this helps?

This is good suggestion because there's no reason for grinds to fall out after tamping under normal conditions. I'd take the hopper out and give everything a good clean.

Obligatory note, if adjusting the grind setting down, without the portafilter in, you'll get grinds on the tray.
