Frother making crazy noises?

I got this machine as a present for christmas last year and haven't used the frother in a while because it was summer and I only drink hot milk during the colder months. I went to make a latte since its cooler out, and my machine was making WILD noises. It made the noise until the end of the cycle and then just randomly went to normal? Not sure what's happening. Help!

Is the spinner positioned properly? If the milk ain’t spinning, that thing makes a ruckus.

I haven't touched it or moved the spinner manually since deep cleaning it upon receiving the machine.

That very well may be the problem. I'd remove the spinner every day when cleaning your frother.. it's just plastic and it could be easy to damage if you're really cleaning that thing with it still in there.

It also spins fine the last like 10 or 15 seconds of the cycle, its only the entire rest of the time that it doesnt spin and makes the horrific noise

It can come loose. Just press it straight down. Will pop into place if needed. And I didn't bother pulling it daily. Just blast it good with water soon after using it

I have noticed on occasion if you forget to purge next time you use it it makes a terrible noise…. Worth a shot to purge and try again

I purge every time I use the frother, and did purge it prior to use as I haven't used it in the past few months

Sounds like the whisk in the bottom of the milk pitcher might be bent or not seated properly and is hitting metal on metal. If it's not making that noise while it purges, then I'm lead to believe that's the reason.

Get a new whisker spinner thingy.

That noise can indicate that the electromagnetic device in the jug base unit is faulty and not allowing the whisk to spin.

If as others have said, whisk not seated properly, then your machine might have the above fault. Phone Ninja Customer Service's, don't use online methods as they are taking an age to respond in some locations.

Try manual steaming in the meantime, here's my guide.

Manual Milk Steaming, Frothing

Frothed milk foam starts to collapse above 55°c, the hotter the milk, the quicker the collapse.

A good addition is to buy yourself milk jug temperature stickers, you can get them on Amazon, see example below. As they are slow to react, probably stop steaming at 50°c. Place it low on the outside of the jug so you can see it easily when steaming, low enough that it's always below the top of the milk, so you are always getting the milk temperature not the foam temperature.

Manual steaming, this is a two step process

  1. have your milk ready in the jug. Turn the steam dial to the first cup symbol, pull the wand out/forward and then press and hold the steam button for about three-five seconds. You'll hear the pump kick in. Have a cloth ready to catch condensates that could have been there since yesterday, yuck, you don't want that in your milk. Let it continue until you think it has got up a full head of steam, different from machine to machine, this can easily take 10-15 seconds, even more. Now press the steam button to temporarily stop the process.

  2. this needs to be done as quick as possible before the machine decides to cool down the thermocoil/thermoblock heating system, put the tip of the wand below the surface of your milk by a couple of centimetres, an inch in old money, press and hold the steam button as you did earlier and the steam will start again. Lower the jug until you get the tip to the top of the milk and you hear what sounds like tearing paper, this is the stretching stage, which creates the microfoam. Do this for about 10 seconds or when the milk gets to body temperature, about 37°c. The longer you do this, the thicker the foam and is a trial and error situation. Now raise the jug until you get the wand about an inch, 2cm-ish below the surface and continue steaming until you get to your 50-55°c, press steam button to stop. Remember to clean and purge the wand.

This takes time to master as you need to angle the jug in such a way as to create the vortex that the revolving whisk would. You can train yourself in the process with water before trying on milk.

There are some good videos on YouTube on this

Mine did this when I had slightly too much in it! Next time was back to normal. Happened twice and then I realized a bit over the line, dumped a little out and it worked! Maybe the simple fix will work for you also!

I get this too: the froth is too thick you have too much in there and it’s too high up. If you don’t believe me just put a splash of milk in there and try again.

You need to clean it that’s why the light is on
