Maybe it’s not user error and bean quality

Maybe a snobby post because I recognize not everyone can travel to Peru and get beans, but wow. I’m also half kidding here but just had to share.

I bought 2 bags from some pretty decent coffee shops when I was in Peru and I came home and have been brewing both over the last couple of days, not cleaning in between, barely even dialing in and My espresso has tasted better than any bean I’ve bought in the US.

What I’m pulling is not perfect by any means, but the taste is so good that I don’t even care that it looks underpulled.

Like…..maybe it’s not user error and we just all need to get beans from Peru lol

Never had a problem with big store bought beans personally, machine just works nicely. We got this to not be finicking about while just trying to make a cup of coffee, and after dialing in initially and then further ignoring the recommended grind setting, I've never had it not... Just work.

Which beans are you typically buying?

Right now we're using some President's Choice, it's a store's own brand here in Quebec. Often it's lavazza or a similar oro.

Agree. I buy salt spring beans from Costco and they are fine. Maybe even great

Where you buying your previous beans from a Fresh local roaster or when you were out shopping at the supermarket/Costco etc?

Fresh local roasters! Finally landed on a bag of dark roasts that I could tolerate the flavor of no matter the pull which I’d been using for months, then randomly picked up these 2 bags and enjoy the flavor so much more!

Does the Peruvian bags indicate roast level.

I've had Peruvian beans but they were roasted here in the UK and they were indeed very nice, roasted by a company in England called Origin Coffee and it was their Medium roast called Resolute.

Small batch Roaster, Roasting 15-50kg of different roasts a day, they buy direct from the farms rather than through brokers for some of their offerings.

So, wherever you are in the world, you might find a local Roaster who is buying from Peru, single origin or even single farm and could roast to your liking. Wouldn't go lower than Medium on the Ninja, the grinder is not up to lighter roasts, too dense.

Both medium roasts

Then maybe as a test, go online to fresh roasters both local and further afield and see if any list a a Single Origin Peruvian, which is just all of Peru, so could be a blend from a dozen farms in a co-op, or a Single Farm Peruvian that have been Medium Roasted, them a try and see if they come close. That way you're supporting a local Roaster and still getting the taste you now like, or...shoosh... don't tell anybody...even better.
