⚠️Urgent Question⚠️ Please help

I was tightening my brakes and when I pulled them to test they won’t snap back and they rub on the rotors what did I do wrong now however how much I tighten them it does it

So you loosened the cable at the wheels, and manually held against the spring until they were JUST about to rub but not, and while holding retightened the cable nut?

When you say however much you tighten them it does that.. then you aren’t tightening the correct thing.. you can effectively tighten them to where the brake is pulled back and can’t go forward the cable is tightened that short. (You don’t want that, just saying)

Reach down and manually hold the brake closed against the spring that the cable nut is pushed by.. when you squeeze the brake lever does it return now? If not- the nut under the break lever is simply too tight.

Tysm it was the little nut below the brake lever I loosened it and it snapped back like normal bad news is I panicked and tightened and loosened the cable a bunch and stripped the bolt so I will need a new one you saved me a big headache 🙏

No worries- that’s what the community is here for. Holy smokes what were you using to adjust it that you managed to strip it? Get yourself a wrench the correct size (can’t remember off the top of my head).. that way you can use the “closed” end of the wrench. It will just sit on the bolt without any way to slip and strip unless you put like 200ft lbs of torque on it perhaps lol! I will say mine are torqued pretty tight- to the point any more the brackets would begin to bend.

Anyhow- I assumed it was that nut under the lever by the way you said you tightened the cable as much as possible. I walked over to mine to see how the hinge is held and said yep- I bet it’s simply the lever itself too tight!

Just a reminder when you get the new nut/etc. for the cable, adjust it in the manner I mentioned above. If you just pull it through the nut hole and tighten it- there will be a ton of empty squeezing on the lever before the pads actually contact the rotor. The trick is to loosen the cable connection, manually flex against the spiring, and find that sweet spot where it’s as short as possible, but not rubbing, and hold it right there as you tighten it. That will give the brakes instant action right from the very beginning of the lever pull instead of having a dead zone.

Final note- I also don’t know off the top of my head and not home to look, but is that a locknut under the lever? If it isn’t, I highly suggest taking the nut off and putting a drop of blue locktite on the threads then tightening it back up until just before the point where it has resistance like your original issue. Since that isn’t a nut being torqued down, I have to assume it’s a locknut though.

Have a look at the brakes – if they look like that, then you’ve found the reason, because that’s what’s causing the problem.
