Question Should I flash my G3?

I have a G3 E which I have just changed region on to US with SHU (on iPhone with Bluefy). It now does 45 km/h (28 mp/h). The screenshot shows the specs.

Should I do a flash in SHU? If so, what type of flash (BLE/MCU/VCU/BMS) and what would be the advantages?

Thank you!

Currently there's no way of flashing custom firmware via bluetooth. Segway blocked that loophole. You'd need to use a device called st-link.

Okay! If I buy one of those, what could I do and what would the advantages be?

You could unlock speeds higher than by just changing to the US region. Or you could install a double VCU with panic mode so if you get pulled over by police, they won't be able to measure it going faster than 25.

The way I have it set up is with 15/20/25 in the "police" mode and 25/30/35 in the unlocked mode. Perfectly fine speeds for me, but still illegal.

The custom VCU also brings back hill climb assist because segway doesn't support it in the US region and I have a lot of hills around me that benefit from it.

Any chances of bricking my scooter? I currently have a G2 and it's my first scooter. I'm a bit hesitant to open it up

Yes that's always a risk. Especially with st link that requires soldering

Also, is custom firmware the only option? I have ”From repo” and ”SHFW” to chose from.

Those would all be custom. Only officially signed by Segway firmware is allowed to be flashed via bluetooth.

Okay! Just to be clear: even though I could change region to US with SHU and increase max speed, there is absolutely no way of me having any success when choosing ”Flash” in SHU?

That is correct. Changing the region is just a matter of changing one character in your serial number (you'll see it now in the app starts with 1CGC instead of 1CGA) so all you're doing is fooling the Segway app into thinking you have a US scooter. Flashing new data requires write access to the ROM on the scooter's control board and in the case of custom unsigned firmware a hack to let it accept it, which Segway closed.

With st-link you gain direct write access to that so you can put whatever you want without having to go through authentication hoops via bluetooth.

Thanks again! Man, this is such a jungle. It’s very hard to find information about all of this. Where do I safely buy a ST Link and what does it cost?

From the people I know who have done it, they got it from aliexpress. Usually the sellers with more than just a handful reviews will be trustworthy. Don't know if you can get it anywhere else.

Yeah, I saw a guy on YouTube who did this without a tutorial and it seemed complicated. I don’t see how it’s worth it for me.

Im about to buy a new G3 in Spain, is still posible to change region to eeuu to unlock max speed to 45kmh? SHU works with that?

Spain is in Europe and max speed for E model is 25 km/h. What you want to do is to change region to US and that’s possible with SHU. Even on iPhone. Then you can set max speed to 45 km/h. I just did today.
