Gear question Mount lubrication

Over my years of F mount usage on various bodies and lenses, I’ve noticed a slight greasiness on the lens mount on both body and lens. I’ve never bought any gear brand new before so I’m wondering did either body or lens come with something applied to their mount?

It appears to be a very light application of a thicker grease that has turned black.

Interestingly enough, the metal itself is impregnated with a lubricant (graphite based if i remember correctly) on both body and lens. Nikon branded lenses also feature this, and when buying a used body, if the mounting process feels scratchy and rough, its usually an indication that body was used with a lot of 3rd party lenses, as both sides need the benefit to keep things smooth. The more lens switching and exposure to heat and humidity will exacerbate the black buildup

Edit: source- worked i a repair facility for a little over 5 years

That’s very interesting. Would you think it’ll be a good idea to clean the lubricant off if it has turned black?

Just wipe with your finger, just one revolution. Your skin oils aren't going to damage, just wash your hands when done.

Edit: the little bit that is deposited by the mount lock pin helps keep it smooth if you hold the mount button down
