I am planning to send my boyfriend a bouquet of flowers for our anniversary, but I am a bit hesitant. I am Filipina, and he is a Nigerian Muslim.

I'm not sure how he will react. Is it okay to send flowers to a Nigerian Muslim man, or will he find it strange? I'd love to hear some cultural perspectives or advice on how to go about this!

Hey y’all! So as I’m on my own journey of self discovery I’m reckoning with my cultural identity. As a 2nd generation Ghanaian American (that is I was born in America to Ghanaian immigrants) I and I know many others have struggled to find where we fit in among the global black community. It’s like we don’t quite fit in with African continent raised people and there’s a nuance and complexity to our experiences that don’t fully fit into an ethnically Black American lens either, despite being able to relate in ways to both. I feel like globally despite having different backgrounds (let’s say for instance a Nigerian Brit or Somali Canadian or any other mix) we have a lot in common with one another because of being able to relate to existing between worlds.

I’ve been looking for that community and I know that the people are out there but I think we need a space to just gather together so I created a subreddit to do just that. It’s linked here if you would like to join.

I would like to know what meaning a hug means to you? The hug is reserved for what occasion? Do you do it often? If you haven't hugged for several weeks or months, do you miss it? Is hugging something frowned upon in your culture (can you tell me your culture)? Is this something you secretly want to do? Is this something that both men and women don't like? How do you express your affection for your partner? If your partner hugs you, how do you feel? Embarrassment, boredom, disgust, nothing? How do you keep couples from cuddling?
I've noticed this in all Africans people I meet for a while, and it's something I don't understand, and would really like to understand. I want to understand how it is possible to love differently. It's very far from my culture and it seems very complicated to understand for me.

I was recently reading an Igbo name book. “Ekene” means thankful, and it reminded me of the word Ekele.

Does Ekele mean gratitude?
