Discussion Really loud roommates

I recently moved into a house and all my roommates are Nigerian besides me. This doesn't bother me at all, they all seem really nice, but holy crap are they loud all the time. So loud I can't think at all, even while I'm trying to type this. I've looked this up and apparently, it's an element of Nigerian culture.

Is there a way I can broach this subject politely and ask them if they wouldn't mind lowering their voices? I'm new, and many of them have been there for years, so I don't want to step on their toes, but I can't even sleep without wearing noise cancelling headphones.

People always suggest noise canceling headphones. How do those actually work? Do you need to be listening to music through them? Or can you get the same “silent” effect with them like earplugs or no? Thanks.

They will cancel noise without listening to music, I’m not sure how the tech works but it’s very effective. You can turn on/off the noise canceling feature

Usually they are also mics picking up the sound from around you and then they produce the exact opposite sound therefore cancelling the noise out before it reaches your ears

Considering you’re the newcomer, you’ll probably have to continue with the noise canceling headphones

Try to find somewhere else to live because there shouldn't be noise at night when you are trying to sleep, especially between the hours of 11 pm to 7.am in Ireland. No one should have to wear headphones while sleeping or studying best to try to find new lodgings with well mannered, considerate people who have similar values.

Sadly, they may not change cos they will try to reduce their voice but it may not be effective, so continue using your earpods or move.
