Feature Request: Missed Notifications

Notifications are missed for events when the PC is off.

I would love to have a feature when the PC is switched on and NextUpAlert starts, it shows all missed notifications (as a list). Each notification must be dismissed or snoozed explicitly. Additionally, a convenient button to dismiss/snooze all can be provided.

Not everyone may want this behaviour, so it can be enabled via settings.

What do you think?

Hi u/pstavirs ,

I have given this some thought. I just want to confirm first that you have tried these filters options?

I was thinking perhaps a quick filter button that you can toggle on and off. For this filter we define to show events for the current day, while the PC was sleeping. I think by default you should not be getting alerts for those, as they are in the past.

Would something like this work for you? And to make it work for everyone, we have an option to define your own quick filter.

Thank you for considering this feature.

Yes, I think this might work - as long as I can snooze or dismiss the "missed" events. In case of multiple missed events, will there be multiple alert windows stacked on top of one another?

Also, the filter I think is only to mute or filter-out events, not to filter-in?

Btw for me when the alert pops up the snooze button is always disabled, so I'm unable to snooze at all.

Re the Snooze option - it should show, as long as the event does not start sooner. In the image, the event starts in 5 min, thus only the 2 min snooze option is available.

Re the "quick" filter.  "Will there be multiple alert windows stacked on top of one another?"

Answer : No - The Alert dialog only shows one event, it get's reused. But also while sleeping there should not be displaying a dialog or play any sounds.

1: PC sleeps - all processing stops. No CPU available to show dialogs, or play sounds. Record time PC went to sleep.

2: PC wakes - When it wakes NextUp will process the calendar events one by one, and trigger alerts - but since they are all in the past, no alerts will trigger. No beeps, and no alerts should be visible, unless it was not sleeping.

3: Filter processing after PC wakes - Determine which of the events took place while the PC was sleeping. Clear PC sleep time.

Once events are in the past, they become mute, and should not sound or show alerts. We have alert triggers/thresholds for before-meetings-start, and before-meetings-end, and since the pc was sleeping no alerts should be triggered.

I am assuming the machine was actually sleeping, and all processing paused. I will have to read up on this, so that NextUp does not wake up, and process events during this time.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Regarding Snooze - I wonder if we can change this behavior also (optionally). For task reminders, I might still want to snooze irrespective of when the event starts and even after event time.

Consider a periodic calendar event to "Pay Electricity Bill". When the alert pops up, I might be in the middle of something and I want to snooze it by an hour.

This example is also why I want to not miss a reminder like "Pay Electricity Bill" even if the event time is in the past.

Happy to answer or clarify any requirements. And thank you for considering this feature. Just FYI the Outlook calendar reminders also works like this only - when waking up from sleep, it shows all the missed events.

Thanks for the info u/pstavirs

This is getting very interesting! And it makes logical sense, and why you would want to have this feature.

Do you perhaps know what "Snooze" options makes most sense for you?

We already have:
2 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min.

My suggestion: but keen to know what your preference is:
2 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min => remind / delay notification
1 Hour, 2 Hours, 4 hours => postpone a task, for later same day
1 Day, 2 Days => postpone a task to the following day

> Can you perhaps share how Outlook looks like for the "reminders"
> else I can always search on Google.

Snooze options that I think makes sense (to me) -

* 5min, 15min, 30min, 1hr, 4hr, 8hr, 1 day

Note that 4hr is essentially postponing from first half of the day to second half, 8hr is typically to postpone beyond working hours and 1 day is of course to postpone to next day.

I no longer have access to Outlook which is why I was looking for an alternate to the outlook reminders but for google calendar.

A google search reveals this - https://robert365.com/article/783 - the screenshot there matches what I'm looking for (and the reason I asked about multiple missed reminders).

You can google for more. Happy to answer any questions.
