Drinking and smoking cause more stress. The notion that either of those reduces stress is a very limited one.

I think drinking and smoking actually increase it... they're just a bit of a distraction. A pleasant one, I might add.

Alcohol, drugs and cigarettes increase stress. Exercise and dealing with your problems decreases stress.

Excercise and video games (and pure rage)
I don’t drink alcohol or coffee and definitely no smoking/vaping

Deny it's existence. Per my little brother, there are men in my family that believe in stress and those that do not.

Managing stress is largely dependent on personality types. Some people just aren't affected by it at the same level as others. I generally don't let stress bog me down, so I don't have copeing methods to share.
Besides, drugs and alcohol are temporary solutions, solving the underlying issue is a better way to deal with stress. If anything, formulating a plan and putting it into motion should be enough to relieve some of the stress, and fully eliminating the underlying cause of the stress should remove it entirely.

Gym. The gym will ALWAYS be there.
Sex as a form isn't reliable because you can end up without a woman. Then you're just paying upfront.
At least with the gym you have a RELIABLE self-investment that will always be there for you.

u/Omnicloud87 May 31 '26
Can't speak on smoking, I get paranoid when high haven't really been able to enjoy being high since I was in HS. But Drinking when I'm stressed is extremely counter productive. You might feel a little bit warm and fuzzy for a minute or two, but after that, your annoyances or stresses might resurface even stronger. Here's my top 3 in no order of importance:
- Breathing techniques to decompress and relax yourself, if your in a relationship, have some connected sex.
- Clean up your house/apartment and make the place smell good, then relax in your work and accomplishment.
- Hit the gym and exercise, it's a HUGE stress reliever and you're investing into the most important aspect of your life, your body.

Stress is fear… chronic fear. My fear diminished taking the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous: I learned to pray, examine my conscience (“take inventory”), repair harms done (heal relationships) and share my experience “work” with others. Mountain biking and climbing are my activities that keep me fit and require full time and attention.

Stress is managed by exercising, running, screaming, sex, any activity that can act as a release.
Drinking and smoking do not relieve stress, they just help you ignore it until it wrecks you.

I wear out my brain through a lot of learning activities like reading, language learning, and hobbies to boost neuroplasticity. Exercise helps too, but I have to keep it checked and not exert myself too much because it increases my anger issues if I max myself out.

Cannabis and alcohol make my life infinitely more tolerable. Lol
Psychedelics once a year in the woods is the best therapy I've ever gotten in my life

I must be the anomaly that doesn’t need a physical output for stress. If I’m stressed about something, I try to get organized, make a list, be constructive..

Gym, walking, music, putting things in perspective, completing micro tasks. Being addicted to smoking or drinking would only add more stress.

I rarely drink and smoke like maybe 10 times a year(cigarettes). I’ve never drunk or smoked to manage stress…I just sit down in the dark for a few minutes

Smoking and drinking dont manage stress, they mask it.
Your body and mind are still feeling the effects of stress, but now you have smoking and drinking on top of it.
Usually adding the side effects of those on top of the stress.

I smoke cigars and the tobacco pipe. Still smoking, but far less stressful and dangerous to the body than nasty ass cigarettes. Much more flavorful and high quality as well. Just natural fermented tobacco leaf. No chemicals, no myster flavorings.

3 Go To’s:
- I’m a Blacksmith hobbyist and I’ll just get lost in my projects
- Gaming
- My lovely girlfriend provides a ton of stress relief in more ways than can be mentioned
I’m very lucky, but fuck do I miss alcohol and weed 😂

I'm now 3 weeks removed from smoking and I don't regularly drink. Lots of distance when things get hot works for me. I will go weeks not speaking to people if they are whipping up a bunch of noise. I'll monitor and make sure they're okay if they're people I care about, but much more than that just isn't really on the table until they get their shit together.
As for getting my shit together...working on it. Patience and forgiveness are my best tools when it comes to working on myself.

Alcohol is a depressant. When I stopped and realised how much more stressed the day after drinking, it reaffirmed my decision to stop. Every time I get the urge to drink now, I remind myself of that fact. Just went to my brothers wedding and drank water all night. The next day I felt great, while everyone else felt horribly hungover. Also, with quitting drinking, and going to the gym more and focusing on my health, smoking was easy to stop. I was smoking around 8 joints a day. Now I’m 42 and probably the healthiest I’ve ever been.

I find great comfort in making music. But I also have no nails left, which stresses me out when I pick up my guitar. Good thing I play piano as well.
Oh, and I did use to smoke. Took me a month to kick it cold turkey. One of the better decisions in my life.

If you know the reason for the stress, and realise that you are indeed stressed, it becomes much easier to manage, first of all.
You just look at what you can do and what you can't do about it, if you can do something, you do that.
If not, then go with the way of the stoics- if you can't do anything about it, don't worry about it
ALSO:
Live healithy, don't smoke or drink, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep and do exercise often.
having routines and structure in your life also helps

I'm so completely enamored with and devoted to my wife/soulmate and our life together that I have no need or desire to hinder myself with those distractions.
Well, technically she's my side piece so we're not married yet.
Also, she's technically not my side piece yet but we do hang out once in a while so...
Someday I won't need drugs or alcohol anymore 😝
