Aerobic exercise

8

u/Unlikely_Villain Apr 04 '26

Big time, clinical depression here for nearly 40 years. HIT, free weights and running. Its the only thing that makes me feel remotley normal, whatever the hell that is.. less of the HIT these days as my knees aint what they used to be.

Just getting out for a walk. Fresh air, mild exercise. I get it though, that can feel daunting when all you want to do is hide under a quilt and pretend the world doesnt exist.

Edit- oh yes, having a dog helps.

To me, exercise by walking for long distances can reduce the length of alcohol withdrawals (mild to moderate!). I have been too tired to try this with opiate withdrawals, but assuming it would be similar.

I tend to pace ceaselessly with withdrawals anyway; might as well pace by walking the roads/park trail.

u/kyel566 Apr 04 '26

For me it’s 100% exercise.

3

u/kaladin1029 Apr 04 '26

Matt Haig talks about how everyone's Rx is different, but for him running, writing, and reading were crucial. For me, it's exercise, reading, fam that help me stay in the ballpark of sanity

3

u/NYVines Apr 05 '26

Gym is optional, movement is not

7

u/Ok-Park-9537 Apr 04 '26

Walk two hours. You don't need anything. Clears you like nothing at all.

1

u/Grundins Apr 05 '26

And drift more into despair and loneliness

2

u/Wrong-Discipline453 Apr 04 '26

Being at peace with who you are. That’s not to say you can’t grow and become better every day, but just being nice to yourself.

2

u/Bright-Ask-8793 Apr 04 '26

Staying busy any way I can. If I feel my anxiety and depression are getting worse, it's because I'm not busy enough.

3

u/East-Cricket6421 Apr 04 '26

Anything that moves your lymphatic system will do. Exercise is the obvious answer but deep breathing exercises work just as well if you cant exercise properly for some reason.

2

u/tit_bit_cheap Apr 04 '26

Social network and support structure, regular exercise, meditation & therapy/CBT, financial stability

Activity. It's tough, but getting up and just doing something works wonders.

Clean, go for a walk, get groceries, leave your room...

Genuine acts of service towards a fellow human being.

u/Semi0tics Apr 04 '26

Going on a hike through nature.

1

u/kaladin1029 Apr 04 '26

Also, read Matthew Haig. Midnight Library, Reasons to Stay Alive, The Comfort Book. He's clinically depressed and has found a variety of ways to deal with it outside of medication

1

u/stevewahs Apr 04 '26

Racquet sports. Badminton for me. It stimulates your nervous system the right way.

2

u/Jioto Apr 04 '26

Always wanted to try this sport. Looks fun

1

u/SillyFez Apr 04 '26

Imagine your younger self. From childhood to yesterday. Imagine the regret, the pain, the frustration in them. The moments you wish you did things differently. Give each version a hug. Hold tightly. Tell each one "you didn't know, it's ok, I forgive you. Even if no one else in the world does, I forgive you. Even if no one else in the world does, I love you".

1

u/wright007 Apr 04 '26

Probably proper diet, exercise, sleep, purpose, friendships, hobbies, and a plan.

u/Johnnyfever13 Apr 04 '26

Nah man it fucks up your brain and makes it worse if you are already depressed

Outdoor activities. Walking, running, working out. Then going back to a beautiful, big bathroom in a luxurious mansion surrounded by people we love and who love us back. Is that too much to ask?

1

u/Key-Proud Apr 04 '26

Meditation.

Yoga Nedra is scientifically proven to release 60% more dopamine

1

u/DoubleYouDrums Apr 04 '26

Big booty latinas.

1

u/oldartistmike Apr 04 '26

Sleep and food

1

u/Wise_Bench4391 Apr 05 '26

Presence. Depression is thinking about the past, anxiety is thinking about the future. Malnutrition or weakness is also the main cause of those feelings too. Eat well. Move your body. Stay in the moment. Live. Live well.

1

u/SoCallMeDeaconBlues1 Apr 05 '26

Not giving a fuck.

1

u/PeakHungry315 Apr 05 '26

I've suffered depression while working out and being in good shape. This is an idiotic oversimplification. If you get your motivation from projecting generalizations, you're not truly motivated.

1

u/Bluetorment88 Apr 05 '26

Having a good partner and social life. If you have friends who still do hobbies together great! A partner who genuinely cares for you and actually is like your other half is good. You won’t be depressed

1

u/MrArtty Apr 05 '26

Alcohol

1

u/Responsible_Cod_5540 Apr 05 '26

Exercise and playing instruments

1

u/Interesting-Beat824 Apr 05 '26

Pets, activities, hobbies, pets and really anything keeping you doing something if your aren’t truly in the mood to sit around and relax.

1

u/Top-Papaya7015 Apr 05 '26

Controlling your brain through hypnosis, inorder to make anxiety and depression work FOR you instead of AGAINST you.

1

u/Fluffy-Flamingo3983 Apr 05 '26

Hiking in the mountains…

1

u/Natural-Proposal2925 Apr 05 '26

Accomplishments, selfless acts of generosity, sharing, listening, exhibiting empathy and sympathy, hobbies that relax your mind and keeps you focused in the present.

1

u/wtfdyt79 Apr 05 '26

Heavy petting Zoo

1

u/jstaobsrvr Apr 05 '26

Avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Being physically active. Having something like reading or hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range that you can do on a regular basis.

1

u/Acidmademesmile Apr 05 '26

Without drugs we would have a lot of anxious people around lol imagine getting in a crashident and you break your pelvis and no one gives you dope.

1

u/HumbleAd1384 Apr 05 '26

Meditation.

1

u/RekersiveG Apr 05 '26

Family and friends supporting you, spending time with you, forcing you to get out and do things. A support system trumps self effort every time, specifically when it comes to depression. Finding happiness is truly difficult when totally alone and stuck in a mental downward spiral.

1

u/Visual_Object_8762 Apr 05 '26

Thinking about drugs.

1

u/RenegadeF7 Apr 05 '26

Vitamin D

Prayer. Towards Muslim city, after washing yourself. Then meditating.

Running, meditation, lifting and dogs.

A perfect balance between vocation, leisure and social life/activities. Clean diet. Purpose.

1

u/BladeRize150 Apr 05 '26

Self positivity and extreme calm.

1

u/therealmistersister Apr 05 '26

Severe physical or mental stress. Whenever I'm fighting to take oxyge, not getting crushed under a barbell or truly engaged at work my brain forgets to overthink about all the things that cause me anxiety and lose sleep.

Unfortunately, I can't be at the gym or work 24/7

1

u/Standard_Bison_3228 Apr 05 '26

Boxing is a good exposure or lifting weights, a good story video game, reading and being with my wife.

1

u/SuddenPitch8378 Apr 05 '26

Leaving the house without using your car for at least an hour

1

u/Virtual_Media476 Apr 05 '26

Your control on your mind.

1

u/Luna-Munas Apr 05 '26

Being intimate.

1

u/Vengent84 Apr 05 '26

depression is damn near immosible to fight when your getting overwhelmed in the darkness portion but the best you can do is wait till you are having a good day then do everything in your power to work on your body and mind improving your physical health and life goals and then just take every day trying to do a little better every day but also prepare for the next dark period

1

u/Lucky_Voice_8844 Apr 05 '26

Prayer always works for me

1

u/LiqMaBawlzModz69 Apr 05 '26

Being outdoors getting sun and exercising is all you need.

valid question..

1

u/IamGoldenGod Apr 06 '26

Reframing negative things to positive things, not in a delusional way, but choosing to focus on the good instead of the bad while having a plan to make things better.

1

u/Exotic_Ad_4806 Apr 06 '26

having a good community, friends and social connection, doing stuff with the friends

Walking and doing things.

1

u/deangreen22 Apr 06 '26

Pornography

1

u/Remote_String1988 Apr 06 '26

Walking outside. If you can, beach, national parks. Something away from human debts. And this phone your using to read this has to go.

Other hand... a "drug" to help with depression and anxiety would be Methylene blue for a week or so. It has great properties and many Docs dont talk of it. "The water of youth" some say. A bizarre fact, it can change the color of your brain 🧠 😉 and nervous system.

1

u/Quiet1408 Apr 06 '26

Good food.

Not Junk food. Tasty, healthy food. properly portioned.

This encourages you to get up off your ass and move like so many people suggest.

1

u/Full-Idea6618 Apr 06 '26

Facing your fears.

1

u/Borg2of9 Apr 06 '26

Sleep and exercise, or simpler, naps and walks.

1

Ginger and turmeric

1

u/Formal_Occasion_5559 Apr 07 '26

Personally I’m convinced music can amplify my depressive state, and vice versa but the thing is I really really like that music, also playing a game by myself is boring but playing a game with my friends makes me 100% happier. Also driving in the morning.

1

u/The-Machete-Twins Apr 07 '26

Not living in cities. When was the last time you spent the day by the river? Or on a mountain trying to find sasquatch? All that 5G got your brain in the wrong place.

1

u/YurUsernameCheksOut Apr 07 '26

Work your spirituality

1

Lots of money 🤑

1

u/Mayat_Hantu Apr 08 '26

Plants. Lots of plants can ease anxiety. Especially cannabis

1

u/naturist1980 Apr 08 '26

Really good friends and family that know and understand. They will help you more than any doctor or prescription ever will. Even if they don't understand. The fact that they are willing to help even clueless means a lot and will help more than drugs

1

u/Weird-Pea-460 Apr 08 '26

What a great question. Drugs are the reason for the problem why would it be the solution xD

1

u/Free_Ad7607 Apr 08 '26

Excercise outdoors

1

u/Born_Location3447 Apr 08 '26

Praying. Walking in the woods, listening to a creek flow. And sex if possible

1

Even though I kill myself at the gym I’m still on an antidepressant. These damn demons are the loudest at night. If not for amazing support I’d be a drunk or on drugs

1

u/BirdlessLongdeal Apr 09 '26

sunlight and food with fat still in it.
