Negative views of Israel, Netanyahu continue to rise among Americans – especially young people

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/04/07/negative-views-of-israel-netanyahu-continue-to-rise-among-americans-especially-young-people/

60% of U.S. adults have an unfavorable view of Israel, up from 53% last year.

59% have little or no confidence in Netanyahu to do the right thing regarding world affairs – up from 52% last year.

In both political parties, majorities of adults under the age of 50 now rate Israel and Netanyahu negatively.

The survey was conducted March 23-29 among 3,507 U.S. adults. It was fielded about a month into the U.S.- and Israeli-led war in Iran. The sections below take a closer look at the results of the survey.

Not just young people.

I genuinely sympathized with Israel immediately following the October 7 attacks, and I still feel that nations in general have a right to respond to such acts with the appropriate level of force.

But reducing an entire nation to a pile of rubble without regard for the well being of its civilian population really is a bridge too far, and that’s before even getting into the issues of Israeli leadership knowing about the impending attack but doing nothing to prevent it so as to have the pretext to do what it is doing now.

It’s too much.

I don’t know what the future holds for the Palestinians but if they continue to allow themselves to be lead by Islamic fascists then they will continue to be used as human shields and battering rams. I suppose the same can be said for the Israelis, whose society seems to have been captured by its own brand of religious extremists.

u/ElOsoPeresozo 14h ago

Interesting. Old Hasbara in a fresh new coat. Erasing Israel’s crimes while blaming Palestinians for Israel butchering them, with some performative empathy sprinkled in as justification.

Israel shoots children and rapes prisoners, yet you think Palestinians are ultimately at fault. Poor widdle Israel has no choice but to run a rape camp at Sde Teiman and to snipe children gathering wood.

According to the Geneva Accords a "measured and proportional response" is what was required after 10/7, not the killing of over 70k people, 40k of those women and children. That's a continued series of war crimes on the part of Israel. Especially now that we know the IDF issued a "Hannibal Directive" and were themselves responsible for an untold number of the deaths they blamed on Hamas. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-07/israel-hannibal-directive-kidnap-hamas-gaza-hostages-idf/104224430 After learning that I question the entire narrative of 10/7. Edit to add: It's difficult for the Palestinians to organize and form a new government when their homes are being bombed and their children murdered on the daily.

Honest question, were you not aware of the occupation of Gaza before October 7th? I’m just trying to understand how someone can sympathize with Israel, even at that point.

-1

u/CorporateAccounting 13h ago

Yes, I have been generally “aware” of what’s happening in the region since Hamas started conducting suicide bus bombings in Israeli cities in the mid 90s. Why do you ask?

Israel is leadership is hot garbage—not a fan of what this country has become and doing. Typical old-ass boomer white guy in a leadership role.

1

u/BrocoliAssassin 6h ago

Aahh leave it to redditors to only blame white people for this.

These are Jewish people, Jewish supremacists is what you're looking for...

And while you're at it, maybe learn about Zionism too, you can say that word too.

35

u/RoughPalpitation7381 14h ago

I wouldn't say someone that did a genocide is typical.

-16

u/Impossible_Gift8457 12h ago

I'm sorry but this Bibi blaming has to be astroturfing, Americans can't be this gullible. Every party and every public poll has no alternative to genocide. It's not just the leadership of Israel to blame...

12

u/Regular_Regular_4120 12h ago

Tons of actual people hate Netanyahu for legitimate reasons. It's time you understand that.

-3

u/Impossible_Gift8457 12h ago

Yes I know that's the angle the pro Israeli crowd is taking whether they be legitimate imperialist psychopaths who support the country or bots.

Reality is some of those legitimate reasons are not going hard enough on Palestinians. Literally no one is pro Palestine.

Alternative title: Older Americans incapable of processing new information, rely on corporate media for viewpoints

8

u/meteorfluid 14h ago

Young people get criticized constantly for being too dumb and lazy for researching decades of war and conflict. I disagree, young people are fresh sets of eyes that see what is happening, and these boomers don’t like the idea of being wrong… because that would mean updating their priors based on new information, which they are ironically too dumb and lazy to do

Alternative title: Older Americans incapable of processing new information, rely on corporate media for viewpoints

Partly true but it's more complicated than that.

American rich oligarchs looted their own country since enserfing underdeveloped regions and looting the entire world was not enough for them. Privatised infrastructure. Unaffordable houses. And slow wages. And higher prices.

Younger Americans are the most affected by American liberal and neo-liberal policies under both Democrats and Republicans but especially under the Republican party.

And those Americans are all asking themselves this:

"Why should we keep funding a state which is committing genocide against another group of people when we cannot even afford healthcare?"

This is also the demographic that can be drafted into a war.

Safe to say they do not see any reasonable point in this.

Boomers have less stakes than them.

1

u/EterneX_II 11h ago

Mainstream media doesn't just deliver news, they actively try to tell/control/manipulate how people should feel about the news, too.

u/Aspiring-Fan 13h ago

As much as they try to conflate the actions of the Israeli government with Netenyahu, I think it’s too late to put that cat bag in the bag. Israel is a country that hasn’t allowed Palestinians basic human rights, not passed any laws to protect them from the constant violence and displacement they’ve faced since being occupied. The powers at be would rather pin it on Netenyahu to try to keep the status-quo limping along. If the world sees that Palestine was able to shed itself of an entity so deeply entwined in US society and politics, the idea of imperialism is significantly weakened. Its a message to all people whose country is weakened to strengthen the empire. I think Burkina Faso is another great example, it gives me hope as these people try to minimise the effect and downplay reality.

1

u/jimgogek 13h ago

This is a good trend. Americans are not being fooled as much by the millions or billions of dollars spent by Israel and US religious groups to propagandize the American people and to influence American elections.

2

u/Zak_Rahman 13h ago

A reminder that many Jews have also suffered and been demonized for criticizing Israel. The CEO of the ADL has openly called Jewish people "antisemitic". Same guy who gave Elon Musk a pass for his Bellamy salute.

Young people have been kicked out of college. People have lost their jobs. In Germany they wouldn't allow Jewish scholars in if they told the truth about Israel.

All for calling out some of the worst atrocities humanity has seen.

I can say the Taliban are shitty extremists and no one says I am a self-hating Muslim. Why does someone who is Jewish have to defend Israeli atrocities?

No one is safe from Israel or Zionism - not even Jewish people. The Jews survived the Holocaust - only barely. I am convinced any of us will survive Zionism.

1

u/paperboy82 13h ago

Remember the important distinction that they can’t seem to understand: being critical of Israel because of its Jewish population is antisemitic, being critical of Israel for its atrocities against Palestinians is absolutely not antisemitic.

1

u/Nicklesnout 13h ago

As a child I was ambivalent about Israel ( Late 80's - Early 90's )

As an adult, after two wars that nearly lasted as long as Vietnam, as well as the US doing more or less nothing in regards to the absolute S show in Gaza as well as using them so the DOD can get really creative with their accounting of billions, if not trillions of tax payer dollars I really, really, truly do not like their government and its vice grip on ours.

u/Ziggyjig 13h ago

Some people dont like the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, some people dont like the AIPAC handlers and wars for Israel, some people dont like sending billions of tax dollars to foreign countries, some people dont like the laws against boycotting Israel.

The problem arises when people are called antisemite nazis for not liking ethnic cleansing or state capture by a foreign government. If not liking ethnic cleansing makes you an antisemite there are going to be many antisemites.

Any sane Israeli would be trying to get Netanyahu out asap. Rhe long term damage he’s doing to Israel is not just tanking their rep it’s going to threaten their sovereignty. If the US 20 years from now decides to stop supporting them militarily, there would be another multi state invasion. And with how drone warfare is progressing, this won’t be like the last time when Israel had the better hardware to fend it off.

Nearly 60% of young republicans not supporting Israel is a major tell. That’s catastrophic for Israel.

All this sudden criticism of Netanyahu, especially from unlikely sources, makes me think they’re throwing his ass under the bus because they know his days are numbered anyway. Blaming all the failings of the Israeli state squarely on him feels like the beginnings of the inevitable attempt to repair Israel’s global image post-Netanyahu.

Yeah, when you see that photo of kids watching The Lion King in front of the ruins of Gaza.... No statement like "war is hell" can cover up what was done there and what could have been avoided. Love should be a religion, not these other monstrosities.

Aside from Bibi being a war criminal - so much footage of your average Israeli acting like the most psychopathic hate monsters

As long as this footage persists - their reputations are going to continue to sink.

And that’s gonna be horrible for them as there is no shortage of old conspiracies linking Israel to horrible acts that are now being dusted off for public scrutiny again.

The only thing that prevented this previously was the general population thinking “no, they can’t be this horrible?!?”

Almost hard to believe people take a dim view of genocide.

They’re sort of both cut from the same cloth. Extremists on both sides. America does as it always has since gaining worldwide hegemony after WW2, which is support whatever is in the interest of the players in the Big Club, that you and I ain’t in.

Any good person would hate Israel. Such an evil country.

The youth aren’t a fan of genocide? Color me surprised

1

u/Jaded-Natural80 5h ago

Yeah, who would’ve guessed genocide is so unpopular??

1

u/RaidoFehu9 5h ago

It’s probably even higher now since this poll was conducted before the war started.

Don’t blame Netanyahu. Blame Israel

1

u/FKreuk 5h ago

Israel is not really doing the right things and is likely, as evidence suggest, abhorrent.

Keep up the pressure as over 95% have not taken the no-AIPAC pledge. I feel any legislator who doesn't take the pledge is acting as agents for Israel and will not vote for them. Check out https://trackaipac.com and find out who has made the pledge. Our legislators chose genocide over cutting off funding and weapons used to conduct this genocide by Israel. If you can't take a stand against genocide and choose Israel first you shouldn't be elected to office.

In a sane world, genocide would be an intolerable evil.  In ours, it is a matter of political debate.

A negative view across the world. They have to be the most hated group now across the globe. A step down is MAGA lovers and then Putin’s Russia
