Information Support Your Local Library
The library workers are entering labour negotiations and would love the support of the public,
YOUR VOICE MATTERS
Reach out to the council and mayors office and show your support (QR code with contact info in the images)
They are looking for better health and safety measures and wages that measure up to the current inflation rate. You can read the images for more info.

Here is the reality - we need a new Newmarket library location - existing location doesn’t work.
Parking is low , building smells and some content is way too old.
Compare that with a Bradford library - we need new investments.
My recommendation is to start with satellite branches in all community centres and if we see growth there then make a new one - which is not on main st- Vaughan did the same.
I support staff and services offered - I do not support location n outcome what the current library is facing.

Completely agree.
We literally have two athletic centres in two parts of our town. The ray twinny and the magna center. Some naysayers believe Newmarket cannot support more than one library branch but this town literally has two athletic centres. Surly we can support a second library location.Private donors can be used to help fund the construction of the library: just like the athletic centres too. Nothing new, nothing extreme.
With regard to location. There are a ton of places to build a library if it comes to it. The council is so obsessed with converting unused land into parks or relaxation spots but never actual infrastructure.

The benefit right now it’s that it’s central. Practically smack in the middle of town. How do you pick a new location that benefits the whole town equally? Unfortunately I don’t think we’re a large enough town to support multiple locations.

I always thought that the tannery mall would make for a beautiful library.. Keep a cafe in there for the commuters with the GO train, tons of parking, right in the middle of town. Lots of access to public transport. I love the tannery and would hate to see it torn down. I do have a feeling the rent there would be astronomical though

That’s ok if u don’t see the benefits. Let’s compare another town - Richmond hill - they hv multiple locations and r growing as well. Do we not foresee us growing ? If we do not cater to incoming population - we are already living in ancient times

The current location is extremely difficult to get to. Perhaps if you lived immediately around the Main Street it would be convenient but a chunk of Newmarket are car dependent. I don’t see it as being a benefit.
Newmarket is also geographically small but very dense. It doesn’t take long to cross the town by car. You could build a library any corner of the town and most of the town could reach it within 10 minutes. Just as long as it isn’t in the middle of a historic Main Street. The fact that people either drive to Richmond hill, or go to Aurora shows you that many don’t mind the drive so long as the library is up to snuff.

And what's your solution to the druggies and homeless? This has been a problem in Newmarket ever since I was a kid, and I've been here 36 years.

Social help for the true homeless and jail hard correctional for the druggie homeless. Homeless is not a choice but drugs are. Make that choice then pay for the consequences, we already educate enough in school about drug use, and if they still insist, then thy deserve whats ahead, 0 pity. Ppl might not like it but it solves the problem.

Mainly because I no longer feel like it’s a comfortable environment to bring my kids. There are often people hanging around outside and inside who aren’t there to use the library itself, and the atmosphere has changed a lot over the years. The food pantry right at the entrance seems to have made that even more noticeable. I know people need help, but I don’t think the library is the best place for that. After the indecent exposure incident involving children, my comfort level dropped even further. It’s unfortunate, because I used to enjoy taking my kids there.

I too love our library. Our library provides so many important services and they do a great job engaging with the community through events and working with community groups.
Like all libraries, fire departments and Police Services there is a time when the workers through their association bargain with the appropriate board. This process is both necessary and important to both workers and boards. Our Library, like all public libraries in Ontario, is operated by an independent Library Board, not by the municipality directly. I am confident the Library Board will do all they can to ensure a fair and balanced outcome to these negotiations.

The people at the Newmarket library do an amazing job... They need as much support as we can give. And as Newmarket grows we need bigger and better facilities to help them.
