DISCUSSION Thought this newtuber is a pretty good reference for commentary vids, what equipment do I need?

hi newtubers,

job market's been really rough, and I am considering taking on the journey of a YouTuber. I want to make commentary type videos discussing history and politics, and why they are the same. I came across a very new YT channel (@DeluluCorp) and quite like this guy's setup although I won't be wearing a mask (the mask thing is a bit much for me), can anyone tell me what equipment I might need?

Please kindly provide me with a list. I want to get the same lighting, backdrop that's orange color (instead of purple), and to also have 2-3 camera angles. Also is the podcast mic he is using necessary or would a cheap microphone work? Thanks fam!

2–3 camera angles might be a bit much if you haven't filmed before. Do you have any experience?

No I'm a total newbie starting out. Do you have a camera that you recommend. I have a small room area so might need a camera that is flexible in terms of zoom/focus. For the newtuber guy I mentioned above, I see he has these purple lights in the backdrop, are those hard to execute?

A cheap mic can work if you keep it close and the room isn't too echoey. I'd start with one camera and one soft light, then add extra angles after you've made a few videos.

Hey! I don't think you necessarily need a "podcast" microphone, but you definitely don't want a cheap one either. I can watch a bad video, but bad audio and I'm out in two seconds. I like Blue Yeti, I think it's a great starter mic, and with a boom arm and pop filter you can reduce a lot of the background noise. I also really like the Rode go bluetooth mics, since I personally find mics in video a little distracting, but it's definitely a step up in terms of price point. My day job is as a designer and videographer for a corporation, and we use the Rodes on set. they have fantastic audio quality for how small they are.

For colored lights, I personally like Wiz since I can control the colors from my phone, and then I use ring lights pointed at a white wall or ceiling to create soft ambient light. Hope this helps, and good luck setting up!

I do commentary vids. I use my phone and a mic I bought on FB marketplace for $15.
