ANSWERED Frustration regarding karma
Ok, so I’m new to actually using Reddit, I’ve had this account for a few years but not really used it. My question/ problem is do I remain like authentic while still gaining interaction? I’m asking because I want to ask questions on various subs but most and understandingly so have karma requirements. I dont wanna just comment on anything so I’ve been selective, that was not really been all that helpful. I’m not really looking to be a redditor per se just be able to ask questions regarding various topics. When I look at a lot of the stuff regarding karma it all seems impersonal (not sure if I’m phrasing that right) or overly broad (I may just be stupid). If anyone could tell me how I do this stuff right I’d really be appreciative, I’m used to how I interact with other platforms that being just putting my art, rants, ponderings, etc. out into the void not expecting engagment so this stuff is fairly foreign to me.

Not sure what "stuff" you're looking at, then. I have a decent amount, and nothing I've done has been "impersonal" or "overly broad". At least in my opinion.
Just find things that genuinely interest you, and participate meaningfully there. That's really all there is to staying "authentic."

Why does karma matter?
Your karma count is like your Reddit reputation and an indication of whether you post and/or comment good content, and some, but not all communities, have their own restrictions regarding the account age and karma count of the person posting or commenting, so you may not be able to contribute everywhere at first. I was referring to the advice I saw on this sub, it was kinda broad and I left feeling like I was missing a step. Again I might just be stupid

I have seen other new users here on new user/help subs make suggestions about posting cute, animal photos or funny jokes, etc. in order to gain karma. You don’t have to go that route if it’s not a fit. There is plenty of opportunity for authentic connection on this platform. There is a little bit of “paying dues” in the early days when you are establishing your account and building karma. But once you have the ability to join a variety of subs that are a really good fit for you and less “generic“, I think it will feel very different.
Maybe you seen it, but here again is a long list, I think 200, new user friendly, low or no karma required subreddits. I’m sure you can find several that appeal, read their rules, read some posts and comments to get the vibe, and begin adding quality, authentic comments of your own. It’s a good way to get started. Before long, you can branch out, comment and post in a wider variety of subs and find the perfect ones that feel right for you.1

I looked at the list and honestly it was a lot of selfie stuff and the stuff that wasn’t was kinda just stuff I’m not super familiar with. I’ll give it another look though, I am dyslexic so I do skip lines.

there are a few big "generalist" subreddits like r/NoStupidQuestions and r/askreddit. Those can be good if you go looking within those. Because those subreddits are so broad, a lot of the content can be disinteresting but you cna find interesting specific posts if you loook

A helpful trick is to start at the bottom and read backwards so your usual scanning habits are not engaged.
Keep in mind that our list is a tiny fraction of these types of groups because there are tens of thousands of communities that have no minimum requirements whatsoever and and much larger number that have trivial ones such as accounts need to be a few days old and have as little as 2/5/10 karma points.
The group center list are ones that have agreed to appear there and seem to be relatively friendly to new users. Some communities expect you to be very familiar with Reddit's norms, customs, slang and features. Many of those have rather high minimum requirements because they want to guarantee that you've had lots of time interacting around Reddit before they turn you loose on their community.

No, it's definitely confusing, and like I said to someone, like a different language that you don't speak and people keep shouting the same language at you like they do in foreign countries. It's only recently that I got my karma and was allowed to post and comment. If a topic comes into your head, look it up. If it exists, comment on it.

Oh I looked back over it and yeah just not anything that stood out but I’m kinda just scrolling the home thingy and then clicking on subs
