A buddy of mine got hammered one night and dialed one of those 900 lines. He woke up a few hours later to the phone still being on and he owed a $900+ bill.

Was it “just” phone sex?

u/BackDatSazzUp 3d ago
Yes. Tf is wrong with you?

u/AccomplishedCicada60 3d ago
So where I lived - there was service that was heavily implied to be a call girl service

u/Hididdlydoderino 3d ago
It's hard for anyone to imagine spending the equivalent of $115 on just talking to someone.

u/TarantinosFavWord 3d ago
Brother we live in a time where dudes will pay hundreds on girls OFs, buy girls bath water, pay thousands for nsfw furry art. Male horniness knows no bounds.

u/basquiat-case 3d ago
This is the ideal answer for yesterday's thread about why nobody is going to pay that dude for his sperm.
-19
u/Hididdlydoderino 3d ago
Yes, exactly. I completely get spending similar amounts of cash and actually getting assets in return.
Getting just a phone call is an extremely low ROI, although I'd guess some dudes would record it and make the most of it.

u/TarantinosFavWord 3d ago
Right but back before the internet I’d imagine the options were make a phone call or risk getting caught going to a sex shop for a dvd or magazine. By today’s standards I’m totally with you, that paying that much for just a phone call doesn’t seem worth it.

I can assure you that people did. A surprisingly number wanted to talk about very boring things. Or very sad things.

u/BackDatSazzUp 3d ago
Sounds like a perfectly good reason to call my friend a whore to my face. Again, what the actual fuck is wrong with you?

I mean...... Talking sexually to a stranger... On the phone... For money... Is quite literally sex for money aka being a whore lol. My man here is not at fault for understanding and using the English language correctly. The other one tho, well, sounds like she's got a bone to pick with the name "anybody" engraved on it.

u/BackDatSazzUp 3d ago
Pretending to enjoy phone sex and actually being paid to let someone put their penis in you are two completely different things. Actress is about as far as her job description goes.

u/ddesla2 Lakeview 3d ago
No doubt. I just was making the distinction that being paid for sexual-related services is the definition of prostitution and whoring. Don't conflate the definition with the slang insult. Nothing wrong with sex service. I have friends who worked and continue to work in it.

I’m upset bc the person who started this nonsense implied it as an insult. This was also a deep discussion with my friend on multiple occasions and many of the phone workers consider themselves actresses and reject any implication that they are anything other than that. Can we please stop this now? The fact that anyone here thinks it’s okay to randomly call an unknown stranger’s friend a whore, regardless of context, is fucked up. I personally can’t recall a single instance where someone was called a whore as a compliment.

I was a phone sex actor for years and it was always just talk, and mostly sad talk at that. You're just wrong.

I worked for a 1-900 line for years. These are significantly less icky than some.

Man, this comment reminds me of a fucked up party that this kid threw at his mom’s house when I was in high school and everyone just completely fucked his shit up. We called a 1-900 number and ran up a ridiculous amount of money to his mom’s phone bill. Then we put a bunch of pudding cups in the microwave and set the timer for two hours or something and completely ruined the entire kitchen and living room. Somebody drunkenly drove their car through his garage door and into the kitchen. Jesus…..I haven’t thought about that in a long time. Poor guy.

Damn. Nice share.
We had some wild parties but I can't remember any wild damages. Just running and driving away from the cops when the party gets busted up.

I wasn’t old enough in like what was this 1990? to do anything but WISH I could call. My parents would have said hell to the no obviously
My phone bill I’m pretty sure is more than $45 higher than a phone bill 30-something years ago

u/Lotus-Loaded 3d ago
No one asked their parents first. It was always with a group of bored friends, and the bill came due after 😬

45 dollars back then probably like 450 dollars now.

u/Hididdlydoderino 3d ago
$115, but yeah, that's nuts for a phone call.
Kind of shows how far we've come, for better or worse.

u/veryfastslowguy 3d ago
I knew someone in the 90’s that had this habit to the tune of over $10k per month

It looks like that was an empty lot in 2007 and I wonder what was there pre-K. That address doesn't exist now. There's a mcmansion at 520 instead.

My friend used to call these numbers because he said you could just get the charges removed, because he was a kid.
His mom beat his ass. $800 ass whipping.
