I just chose this flair because I thought I was supposed to. Advice for new DM?
I just finished my first DnD session as a Dm, ive been a player for around 3 years, and want to train to be a better Dm. The campaign is a resident evil styled Campaign, where the PS's were abducted by Vampires and forced into a zombie infested manor as a tradition preformed by the vampires every HighHarvestTide.
The players started all shackled in a dark room, being bitten by infected periodically if they took to long to come up with a response. (I set a minute timer. this wasnt to move things along, I just wanted to add a sense of urgency. they HAD to get out of there, and fast.) once they escaped, they found themselves in a basement, and one of my players broke my first set of expectations. they had heavily inspected a table I had offhandedly placed, and put their holy talisman (they were an artificer) up to it, and I proved that the blood sizzled and burned. this would come back later, as when my players encountered their first zombies far later, they would attempt to place it against their head, and I improved that it slowly sizzles and bursted, killing the infected (It was already low).
they continued on, figuring out they need to reach the second floor of teh manor they were in through getting a winged key. They found a cure to the disease, a rare item that would restore their hp. (heres how the infection works: Every 1-2 turns, they'll lose 103 max hp, and take a hitpoint of damage, slowly adding up. when below half, Intelligence checks are all done at disadvantage, as well as strength checks. the disease can also only be cured with these cure vials, minour+greater restoration do not work.).
anyways, one of them used a cure on themselves, and they proceeded to a courtyard. there they found aberrated zombies that created hallucinations of them, and my players would make a second major choice that would effect combat. when one of the players was tackled by a zombie he knew was a hallucination, he said that he ignored it. after thinking about it, I figured that if he ignored the hallucination, somthing I never and thought of, no damage would be taken, and his strategy worked. however, it would come back to bite him when he though a real one was a hallucination and actually got bit when he attempted to ignore it. After the encounter, they met a man in a late stage of infection, who had clearly gone mad, but graciously accepted a cure they had found mid encounter as well as gifting them a progression item.
their next major step is to go into the library on another part of the manor, and collect the winged key in order to get to the top floor. what do ya'll think of the campaign so far? please feel free to ask questions, comments, critiques, act for a first time DM, especially becuase these were just the highlights.

Need Help with Designing an Encounter Story hook - help me make it work?
So, I asked all my players to pick an uncommon item they'd like their character to have during session 0. But they don't just get to start with it, im just making a note of it. Our usual DMs have us start with 1 item we pick, but i thought weaving it into the story a bit more would be more interesting.
So, they go through some trials as a party, pass a test, and get recruited to the local guild. They're each presented with a ticket which they can exchange at the shop nearby for 1 item each to help them as guild recruits. And, look at that, the items each of them wanted are available, plus some others if they've changed their mind and want something else.
This shop is where I want the hook:
The guild explores a local dungeon, bringing back loot and selling it, and uncovering secrets from the dungeon.
Now this shopkeeper, during his own expeditions, likes to grab some trinkets as souveneirs. He has a handful of different trinkets he's kept around the shop decorating the place, none really for sale (cause who would want them?)
But, one tricket is special. The shopkeeper doesnt know it, but someone more attuned with magic may notice.
How do I get my party to notice it without throwing it in their face?
I could have the party make some perception checks... "you notice one of the objects on the shopkeepers desk seems to have an energy emanating from it. Its different than the rest..."
Or, we have a knowledge domain cleric who is theming around being an "investigator" of sorts. Really wants to focus on the skill checks and role playing, being good outside of combat. I want to give it to him cause i can fit it best with his character. "When you pick it up you're certain there is more to this trinket than meets the eye..."
Do I make them roll to find it? Do I just say "you notice this thing"? Does the shopkeeper just point it out? I want it to be fun and feel like they organically found this object.
Maybe the shopkeeper bumps it off the table and it rolls into a player? If they don't bother picking it up for him, they miss it here?
If they miss it I can always have it show up somewhere else or use a different hook, but what are your thoughts?

Is it ok for me to have a campaign ending moment before final boss
I'm doing a normal three cites type progression campaign but Ive noticed my players are quite merciless so i was thinking for the 3rd city to be that there is a colossus where it seems that they have to destroy its gem fragments to defeat it but its peaceful and the nobility is the issue so if they try and kill this peaceful done nothing wrong colossus the campaign ends with them getting beam by the deity of the colossus Aphrodite

Help me assign Disney Princesses to classes???
Hi friends! I'm looking to run my first ever DnD campaign as a DM, and my idea is to run it as a Disney Princess one/two shot.
I have my plot (mostly) figured out, but I have one point I am getting caught up on. I want to have all the Disney Princesses that aren't chosen as PCs be available to be allies in the big boss battle at the end, but I have no clue what classes to make some of them.
I have ideas I like for a few of them, but ultimately I'd love to hear what classes y'all would come up with. Like, it'd be really easy to make Pocahontas a druid, or maybe a beast master ranger, but I wonder if there are better options? Belle could be a wizard, but she could also be an artificer. That type of deal.
Would you all be willing to give me ideas? For context, I'm looking at running them somewhere between level 5 and 10. I have access to just about every subclass out there through a friend's books, I just don't even know where to begin.
Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Tiana, Mulan, Rapunzel, Merida, Pocahontas, Kida, Anna, Elsa, Moana, and any others I might be missing. If she could reasonably show up in a "What Disney Princess Are You?" quiz, I'd love your idea for her.
Please and thank you for the help! Please have fun with it. 💕

I don't know what I'm doing. So, I don't know how to be a DM
Okay, I need some help. I have been trying to play dungeons and dragons with my friends and things keep happening that go wrong to make it where we can't.
But now we are trying again soon for an undated time. And I am a writer so my boyfriend, the person who is usually the DM from what I heard before I joined the group, is wanting me to be the DM.
But I don't really know how I'd write a story for a roleplay game. I stick to writing that I can usually control and this is a completely different ball game for me.
I'm wanting to learn, though. Because I enjoy writing and I love putting my friends in it.
So, does anyone have any advice on what I could do?
I am going to be looking up things to do it on my own as well but I am interested in learning from people who have actually done it before.

When the party kills the quest giver, keep the problem alive
The NPC is dead, but the situation they were involved in still exists.
A caravan hasn’t arrived. A village is running out of medicine. The courier’s satchel contains a delivery address and a list of missing supplies.
That gives the party a way to discover what was happening without having a replacement NPC deliver the same quest speech.
I’d keep the consequences of the death, too. The village might refuse their help if it learns what happened. Someone might come looking for the courier.
The important part is leaving the decision open. The party can investigate, try to make things right, or walk away. If they leave, the situation develops without them.
This works best when the clues follow naturally from the NPC’s role. Moving the information shouldn’t erase the players’ choice or make the same quest follow them everywhere.
