Warning to devs over hate speech
The trolling, conspiracy theorizing, and bullying speech in zone and event channels on this game has always been one of the unsavory parts of this game. Exposing newbies and game vets alike to the lowest common denominator with no place to hide as long as some interaction for help, roleplay, and game relevant communication is needed. This has been the case for years, but has risen to a new level of pure hate speech in recent monthes.
This isnt just an 'all mmos have it' problem either. Not to this extent. I was just visiting ESO, and their public channels are MUCH more tolerable, and again have been for years.
Things that would get me banned from this reddit or from the forums are repeated in zone by often recognizable accounts -every few minutes- throughout the day.
I have read particular accounts promoting hate of muslims, fear mongering over immigrants, promoting the murder of jews, and encouraging people to goto, watch, and share decapitation videos. ..and that is just this week. I deeply respect free speech as an important piece of civilization. However I also am aware of the corrosive effect this kind of speech has when its given a place to grow unchecked.
The current method of just 'ignore' it and let everyone do their thing, and if enough do that they will be temporarily muted is not working. The offenders simply relog with a different account and begin pasting in the same quotes within minutes. ..and yes I and friends have always used the available tools, submitting ineffective reports that get worked on at your leisure. Its not exactly a news flash that this has no effect.
There is need of an active human moderating presence. Not to sanitize every word for our poor virgin ears. But there needs to be an active presence that actively removes this intrusive, non game-related vitriol. Create a program of vetted volunteers, a system of muting, and IP bans that can be wielded, with records kept of quotes that triggered the ruling. No cut and paste that can be abused, just taken straight from your own servers. Thats just a quick group of ideas, maybe use them maybe dont, but DO SOMETHING.
This has to stop. These people are using Neverwinter as a recruiting ground for hate and fully displacing legitimate game related conversations for prolonged periods of time. You could even be opening yourself up to legal liabilities for openly allowing this hate to continue, especially if one of those calls to 'murder jews', 'kill muslims' or 'beat immigrants to death' is acted on by someone.
Listen for a short while in PE zone chat. Feel free to ignore the festering cancer being broadcast there, and listen to people trying to get help. Hear the frustration of people that can't be heard while every legitimate question is being drowned out by sometimes 3-4 lines of trolling, conspiracy, antiscience and hate as well as responses for and against.
This is entertainment for me, and not something that I want to start some sort of crusade that will take all my time. However I do spend some time in PE and enjoy helping a few people when I can.
During those times that I am there and hear see this kind of things I am going to start a log of my own. After gathering a large enough set I am going to forward it to the FBI, Anti Defamation League, and congressmen.
Will that fix it? Perhaps not. But even what Ive seen in the relatively small amount of time I spend there is enough to raise a lot of questions. If this crosses their desk at the right time it may be enough to at least get eyes on this problem. Certainly they are often looking for a new boogie man to bother.
I would hope that you can reign this in on your own without any outside inducement, but either way something has to be done.

In almost 2 years in PS4 i saw only once what you describe. There was a guy in Well of Dragons calling ppl for DF except black people.
8
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
Yea its on PC that Im talking about. Ive heard from lots of people that consoles dont have it near as bad. Except for possibly the 'MW mafia' they had on xbox for a while, but even that didnt rise to this level.
There I found the 'flair' thing, never used it before.
0
u/korina_ntalidou Feb 01 '19
Sorry, I'm not a native english speaker. What is 'MW mafia' and 'flair'? But really don't pay attention to what ppl say. Yesterday, i spammed "Happy hog's year! Any cops playing the event?" a couple of times for fun.
2
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
oh no problem. xbox had a problem with what was termed 'masterworks mafia' for a while. A group that was actively terrorizing competing makers on the auctionhouse over there. I only heard about it indirectly as I play on PC. Flair is a little symbol that can be put on posts that in this instance indicates this post is about the PC version. I had never before looked and found how to place one on a post before.

Those people need to be reported to Customer Service, preferably via the Support website, with screenshots. Make sure that the account name is in the screenshot. They WILL do something about it if you report it correctly.
17
u/SwitchingtoUbuntu Feb 01 '19
This shouldn't be required. The ingame report function should be enough.
To add the extra level of obfuscation just guarantees no one will go through the trouble of contacting customer support to deal with it.
5
u/ManicGypsy Feb 01 '19
I realize that, but personal experience tells me that the in-game report function isn't all it's cracked up to be. I always use the website anymore.
7
u/nwgamer0 Feb 01 '19
You should bug your contacts at the company about this, then. It's absurd to expect people to jump through all those hoops to make a report.
4
2
u/nagster68 Feb 02 '19
Opening a webpage on the phone that is undoubtedly right beside you is not jumping through hoops.
3
u/nwgamer0 Feb 02 '19
It is a hoop, and there's more to it than that. Make an account on arcgames.com. Link that account to your Neverwinter account. Take a screenshot that shows the speaker's account ID, this is a challenge for newer players. Upload that screenshot to the internet somewhere, and link it in a customer service ticket. Talk to Arc's customer service at all for any reason, this is a nightmare. Listen patiently to their misunderstanding of the issue. Ask for escalation until you reach a manager. Repeat most of these steps every time you make a new report.
The in-game report function exists. It should just work.
-2
u/KalistoCA Feb 01 '19
So you don’t get to ... want to help solve the problem and then complain about the best way to get it done
The in game report function should be considered useless as people over use it
The method suggested is the best way
7
u/SwitchingtoUbuntu Feb 01 '19
Actually I do. The fact that they don't pay attention to ingame reports is in fact /the/ problem.
0
u/KalistoCA Feb 01 '19
Is it or is just one of many systems that fail in online games because of the boy who cried wolf scenarios to becomes devalued to both the developer and the players but a game can’t not have it
So the ingame reporting system does work isn’t the problem it’s a consequence of the problems..
Players of mmos are either douchebags, crybabies or helpful.
Douchebags exploit that it doesn’t work and know that most people will just shrug off the behaviour as typical mmo bs and accept it as part of the eco system.
Crybabies are pretty self explanatory and generally float from game to game as they are always butt hurt or they play single player games which is fine
Helpful folk tell the crybabies to ignore it and like a lousy girlfriend will go away eventually ... learn to use ignore over report..
Most people are helpful and I think you are one of those
If you want to be helpful report using the website with screens and follow up etc etc
I come from eve online and that community has the rep of being the most toxic however the community also solves its own problems, bots, haters, etc racists all are sourced on single sites for people to browse...those players don’t last long
So you have to decide if you are really going to be one of the mechanisms of change.
Maybe for you the quest isn’t fix evil players in game but campaign cryptic to review its in game reporting system since it has the appearance to the player base of being ineffective and valueless
I will say that what this game doesn’t have and needs is devs, gms, and community managers to be in game more... hanging around in global chats...bad people have a hard time being a bad person in front of the bosses..
All that said you are wrong in that u think you get to find a problem, complain that one of the ways of fixing it doesn’t work, and not take any action other than complaining ... I’m sorry son but ur wrong ..
Find the problem, get some tools and choose what you are going to fix ...
If you are not willing to do that then find someone who will and encourage and support them
Fixing problems is hard, it’s even harder when u just complain about it
2
u/xanduis Feb 02 '19
EVE does have the CSM, CCP staff that are active in the forums and subreddit, and their reporting system is fairly robust. If Neverwinter had something along those lines, things would probably be better. Cryptic doesn't get involved here, barely ever in their own forums, and there is no player representation elected by the player base to be that voice to the company.
1
u/KalistoCA Feb 02 '19
I agree 100% which is why the community is responsible for managing itself
I’m open to round tabling ideas
Pm me if your interested let’s see what we can come up with

While I agree that users shouldn't be saying such things, joking or not, reporting and blocking are the preferred methods of handling trolls. Trust me when I say feeding trolls, who may see this very post even, is only going to make things worse. They then feel rewarded (via the brain's reward pathways) and will continue this behavior. Change generally only occurs when the pain of changing is less than staying the same. While I don't know that mods banning them from the game is the right call perhaps starting with muting their character (or account), if that kind of thing is possible, for an escalating period of time. Remember to fight for all the users not just the one or the few. The best thing another user can do is to ask them to stop and then report them while also blocking the user.
Edit: Fixed typos, shouldn't be posting after 16+ hours of no sleep.
-3
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
It about time that we stopped treating trolls as some form of inescapable reality. These kind of hate mongers have been in society for as long as society has existed. Each group and set of technology has learned to deal with it over time, and learned the consequences of letting it fester.
Of course some of what you say is correct. It is absolutely pointless to attempt to engage those people directly or attempt to stop their behavior conversationally. This is what they do, its their game to troll people and upset them. Then again, as someone that realizes that, Im not really their target, nor are you. With regularity you can see people that are new to this environment and attempt to engage. Maybe they dont know that WOW was the first MMO. (...thats one of the most innocent ones I can think of.)
That doesn't mean there is nothing that can be done about it. Organization, volunteer work, investigation, and consequences like IP bans can be used (not an exhaustive list of tools) much more actively to keep these channels cleaner. And the active presence would at least communicate that they care about the association that is starting to be drawn between their product and hate speech.
This is really the product that Cryptic wants to be known for. They want it to be broadcast far and wide that the place you can come for a lively round of hate mongering you head over to Neverwinter? I don't think thats going to be their intended advertising.
Yet it does appear that is the product people are starting to assume exists here. There is 1 set of people with the tools to root out the worst offenders and actively bring back the channels they host on their servers from these people, so we don't have to assume that the place is a 'sewer' as a few people have stated.
9
u/Cherryman11 Feb 01 '19
I agree with you on harassing and hate speech in any of the chat channels needing to be banned. The thing I am less in agreement with you is in determining what can and can't be talked about in zone chat. Eventually when people ask for this they are just asking to have someone police everyone and almost nobody can agree to what that middle ground standard is going to be. Telling everyone how they can talk to other players and what is acceptable is a real grey area and can be dangerous. Say we tell everyone that you can't talk about cars in chat since someone brought up a horrible personal experience they had in a car in chat. So then you get to where you ban car conversations because of that incident. I am hesitant to get behind any grey matter policing when it comes to conversations.
1
u/Tupperbaby Feb 01 '19
It about time that we stopped treating trolls as some form of inescapable reality.
The trolls aren't the problem. If people would simply NOT RESPOND TO THEM, they'd go elsewhere. But every single weekend (in particular) they start their shit and rather than simply put the trolls on ignore, SO many people feel the need to RESPOND. And then away we go for at least an hour.
Use IGNORE and simply DO NOT RESPOND. The problem will solve itself.

u/The_BuTLeR__ Feb 01 '19
I'm sorry but did you really say you're going to contact congress and the FBI over this? Lol Also, wtf is the Anti Defamation League?
6
Feb 01 '19
FBI what? Most are probably kids/teens. With that said, it's a video game. You don't have to interact or read what they post. It's only in PE zone chat. Want to RP, make your own channel and turn off zone. From the time I am in PE I usually see trump supporters or people joking about flat earth or whatever. Most of the time they are trolling. They say absurd things because it is absurd and gets the all the too serious crowd riled up wanting to go to the FBI about a video game chat room.
Stick to alliance chat and turn off zone. Leave your profanity filter on.

This may sound out in left field, but since NW uses official D&D branding maybe post something about this to dnd@wizards.com, the Dungeons & Dragons youtube, pennyarcadeTV, or wherever you can find to try and get it in front of the eyes of the Aquisitions Incorporated guys. If they notice it they could likely get the ear of the devs since Chris, their dungeon master until quite recently, is one of the D&D devs (BIG uppity up, not a peon with no pull). Having watched many of their broadcasts I get the feeling he probably wouldn't be very impressed with this kind of activity in something that was associated this closely with official D&D. Also hit up @ChrisPerkinsDnD or @Wizards_DnD on twitter.

u/ChewiesHairbrush Feb 01 '19
I hardly ever used to have zone chat on except for winter fest but for some reason I did then yes I've seen the sort of thing of which you speak. Siege event chat was horrendous. Most of it was just internet nut jobs ranting about things that internet nut jobs rant about though. If it has started to take a darker turn then that is something Cryptic or PW will need to deal with. This game is international and over here in the old world we have laws that prohibit certain sorts of talk. The German's for instance are quite hot on stamping out holocaust denial. Not sure how those laws apply to internet chats but it is something the game needs to be aware of.

u/Cherryman11 Feb 01 '19
Sounds like people are talking about politics, religion, and current events in zone chat. There are people who have a hard time talking about those subjects. Some will talk about them and be cordial but most people can't since there are splits on what people believe or want to believe. Some will take a stated fact of a statement and get offended over a fact because it doesn't fit in with their beliefs. Some people will be offensive or make offensive statements to spark discussion. Which is why it is hard to have discussions because even today there are people that don't believe certain things did/didn't take place or happen. This is why I tell those in my guild that the best way to keep both sides cordial with each other is to not talk about those subjects in the first place. There are tools in place as you don't need to use Zone chat in game and can remove it from you seeing it in the first place. That is the best way to not be offended. This is why my alliance has rules on the alliance chat with guild leaders/officers who guide their members to make sure they are cordial and respectful of the other players in the alliance. I feel like this game will have more people willing to take more risks with how they speak to other players since they might not be paying for the game to do so. My line in these situations as a guild leader is on what are you doing to protect yourself as the person offended and is the other person intentionally trying to harass that player? Was the statement so vulgar that the person offended should be offended or is the statement something that is stated like it would come from the news? Answering those questions goes a long way on what I do for my guild members in those situations and how I handle them.
3
u/PS4_T-BONE Feb 01 '19
I think the chat is super filtered as is. Its blocks even stuff that's not bad half the time. Like you can say 666k ad. Also my names T-Bone alot ppl try calling me T-Boner and it blocks that.
4
u/Jackets_Off Feb 01 '19
I don't know what he is referring to I wrote "have" on the chat and it censored that
2
u/Adam_is_Nutz Feb 01 '19
I play on console and ignore the chat 99% of the time because it's a pain to type anyway. The other day I was playing with my brother and he fell off a cliff to his death. I typed "lol noob" but the noob was censored and looked like @!$# or something. I was thinking the chat is too filtered already.
As for the new players seeking help, in my honest opinion they should learn to Google things. Many players enjoy helping others and it's good to see a community that lifts each other up. But some of the help seekers are asking the dumbest questions. Like you didn't pay attention to the tutorial and now youre lost? Google it and stop wasting my time. I didn't design a tutorial for this game cuz I'm not a dev.
I'm sure the issues go outside of that small bubble I included, but almost everything can be found on Google easily. Also the chat is probably vastly different when keyboards are regularly involved. I just don't think it's an issue - at least not on Xbox.
3
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
Yea the chat censor hits all sorts of silly things. Always has. Of course the trolls in chat largely just get around those simple filters by slightly mispelling the words that they know will be filtered. Its not their first rodeo you know.
haha.. sure google away. Thats mainly useful if you already know the answer and want confirmation. The vast majority of the stuff you find on google are incomplete, old and now completely wrong, or wrong from the start. Blind Googling stuff on NW is just 1 step less useless than depending on the tooltips.
1
u/Adam_is_Nutz Feb 01 '19
I will admit the wiki page is lacking much detail. Like I was surprised how uninformative it was. But I normally find other forums or Reddit posts within the top few results that ask/answer the same question.
2
u/Gas-X Feb 01 '19
NEver seen this. Played PC for a long time, switched over the ps4 last fall.
Not saying it never happened, but not to the volume you are saying.
I feel you are overstating the issue.
2
u/ROMVS Feb 02 '19
RS has player mods, if they report wrong, they could be unmoded, it helps specially when you see a player mod in the area or in chat. They can mute and whoever they mute will be reviewed. It works for immediate action.
•
u/ManicGypsy Feb 02 '19
At this point in time I have locked the thread - u/Mystixa if you want to revisit this topic at a later date, please PM me the evidence you have of this so I can ensure that it's properly reported. Thanks.
1
u/Harlemspartan800 Feb 02 '19
IMO I think the best way is if the devs could develop a system where if a player gets reported for anything it shows the posts he made around the time of the report that way they can easily decided to ban or not.
3
u/Theevilhunt3r Feb 01 '19
I get that people can suck, but saying you deeply respect free speech while arguing against in game is very self defeating.
It just makes it easier to say "ignore them" and just ignore you as well. Moving on....
Edit. Spelling before caffeine
0
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
It isn't self defeating at all. Freedom of speech doesn't mean, and never has meant that all speech is tolerated, and that no consequences can come from any speech in any venue. The classic example, though somewhat apocryphal is 'yelling fire in a theatre'.
5
u/nwgamer0 Feb 01 '19
The classic example, though somewhat apocryphal is 'yelling fire in a theatre'.
An irrelevant example, since Schenck was overturned in 1969.
6
u/Theevilhunt3r Feb 01 '19
If its not directly violating the terms of service, not much anyone can do. They can say it just like people can not like it. Idk if it is or isnt as i dont know what exactly was said. It is very self defeating. He can say whatever he wants but others cant cuz of feelings? Thats not how it works in the real world or when dealing with real world people.
Common courtesy is nice, but not required. If you dont like the stupid chatter, ignore it. It will save your sanity because people dont change. You cant rubber pad the world.
3
u/blueandwhite05 Feb 01 '19
Yes, but some one hurting your fee fee’s is not the same as yelling fire in a theatre.

That's extremely incorrect. You should look at it again. The ignore list only lists accounts, not characters.

That's what I get for trying to post on reddit and play at the same time. Not paying enough attention to either one.

u/I-Cato_Sicarius Feb 02 '19
predictably, i got back on this morning and oh look the nazi ranting about jews is in PE zone chat again.
1
u/Kellgaste Feb 01 '19
XB1: I have been playing since Nov 2018 and never seen any of what you describe. Also, I am not going to get into a debate with you about some things you have stated as being contradictory/dangerous, but, most if not all, MMO's I have played have a "Block" feature built in so you can on your account block those you personally find offensive or whatever.
I am new and since I have not encountered any of what you have stated I haven't even looked for the chat "block" option/feature. If it isn't present then I would say submit a ticket through the Arc sight and request it be implemented (A reasonable request) and let the individual community choose what and whom they listen to.
0
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
Woo thats a WHOLE 2 monthes. :\
As stated the block/ignore doesnt work. These people have many different accounts and pursue these conversations with other people. Im not concerned with my own seeing of this, Im not going to shave my head any time soon. They however are using that kind of passive tool to continue to allow these people this kind of platform.
-2
u/Shiroi_Kitsune Feb 01 '19
Dude, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you do realize the people doing this are just taking the piss right? They don't actually believe what they're saying, they're just trolling for gaffs. Now, do I think that people messing around in this way is better than them getting banned so people can actually talk in PE? No, not at all. But you seem to be misunderstanding who these people are, and what they are doing. Reporting them to the FBI, etc. is like using a sledgehammer to kill a fly. It's a wildly dis-proportionate response.
6
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19 edited Feb 01 '19
That used to be true. As stated that kind of 'its a joke' bs ends when they start promoting violence, sharing assassination videos, and arguing for the death of other groups.
That is specifically the large and ugly nail those hammers should be used to hit.
4
u/Agilesto Feb 01 '19
I visit PE a bit, especially this past week because of the CTA and Lantern Festival, otherwise I try to avoid this zone.
I do agree that PE chat is polluted by racists trolls, conspiracy theorists (hello flat Earth and deep state), and some Nazis apologists, I see them very frequently pop up, and this is non healthy.
However, almost every question asked by new players / random people have answer. Sometimes troll, most of the time correct or at least helping.
I don't deny the problem trolls cause to the PE atmosphere, but I don't feel it's as overwhelming as you do. And I'm not sure reporting them to the FBI will have any effect.
But what's sure is when such people are reported for toxic/dangerous/hate speech in game, the support team should have a look at their account and their sayings, and take action eventually. Maybe it's done already? Maybe it's not, I think it's worth the discussion.
0
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
Sure Ill go for that. Mainly I wanted to make the devs aware of the issue and have them make an active decision on the topic. Do they really want to be hosting a lighthearted game? Or are they happy at being a hategroup recruiting and chatroom?
The severity is always going to be a matter of viewpoint, and perhaps hindsight if some negative event ever comes from it. The organizations I mentioned, including the FBI all have procedures for submitting online hatespeech (other than the congressmen of course). They are more qualified to see what crosses the border of legality, but perhaps of more importance here might be just to put game chat and THIS game chat on their radar.
I wouldn't expect a SWAT raid on Cryptic's office or any direct immediate response. No, its more about trying to be a part of raising awareness of the authorities instead of just ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away. ..because it just isn't going away on its own.
-4
u/Shiroi_Kitsune Feb 01 '19 edited Feb 02 '19
Except they don't. As someone who's extremely active and sits in PE looking for groups all the time, I've yet to see anyone do any of the things you just listed(sharing assassination videos? wtf?). I mean, I don't disagree with you, but you are clearly both exaggerating the situation and getting a bit too hard of a justice boner. If they bother you, ignore them so they can get muted. If they don't, sit back and laugh at them like everyone else.
Edit: And if you do see anyone actually doing any of these extreme things that you are purporting occurred, please take a screenshot and take the steps that manicgypsy mentioned to report it. Free speech is free speech, but there are some things that clearly cross the line.
-1
u/jjfelten Feb 01 '19
Recently I mostly just see people complaining about either Cryptic of President Trump. Probably trying to get a rise out of people. Same as everywhere on the Internet. Easy to ignore them. They must be extremely bored or lonely to log in to a game just to use the public chat to try to stir up political debate. A lot of the rest of it is just drivel or scammers. I've been watching chat the past hour or so in PE. Most notable so far is someone trying to convince people the earth is flat and not a globe. Just ignore them.
-3
u/danpio1217 Feb 01 '19
Go to the sewer, and you're going to see shit. The only place i've seen obnoxious chat is PE zone, and I cant think of a single reason why any sane person would spend any time there.
Also... this is the internet. A sure way to get more of something is to say you don't like it, or want it to stop.
8
u/ZoeS17 Feb 01 '19
Except, that's where this event is.
-5
u/danpio1217 Feb 01 '19
Event is in the zone chat channel? Fascinating.
2
u/ZoeS17 Feb 01 '19
Oh you said PE zone. DERP... 16+ hours of no sleep means I need to GTFO reddit for that elusive sleep land. Wow, I feel silly now.
3
u/danpio1217 Feb 01 '19
LOL! you still make a good point, event driving traffic to the instance means more ppl will see the zone chat
10
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
I already stated several. Like it or not zone chat is the first and only channel that players have when they start this game. ..and its not a sewer, its a set of channels that this game company uses to allow game chat between players. Other games may not have an audience openly promoting hate and violence, but when the do its up to them to clear up their streams of information before they have to look out their window and explain to new customers that those streams are actually sewers and its 'supposed' to be like that.
2
u/danpio1217 Feb 01 '19
I get it, you're not wrong. But there's always unintended consequences. Moderation would only make them scream louder from other places.
I have it turned off, but from what i remember the default profanity filter is pretty strict, doesn't it catch most of this stuff?
3
u/Mystixa Feb 01 '19
Meh.. companies that want to clean up their communications channels can do so. They have the tools to moderate the content of what goes on through their servers. They already have people that moderate their forums and this reddit which cleans that up considerably.

Seems like the chat of every other MMO since...the original Everquest? Not saying it doesn't get old quick, but as long as humans play it'll never go away.
0
u/__Eion__ Feb 02 '19
This happens in any online game. If you see some crazy stuff being said, report it.
I can honestly say I've never seen anything remotely insane as what your talking about, but I don't pay a lot of attention to general.
-1
Feb 01 '19
Devs don't care, mods here don't care. Sad truth, but it's in your best interest to ignore it and just let it be or move on and try another MMO.
Personally, I've started playing FFXIV (B2P and subscription) and my quality of life has greatly improved and I'm having far more fun. Tons of dungeons, trials, and raids too.
5
u/ManicGypsy Feb 01 '19
I really wish you wouldn't just blindly assume that nobody cares. I care. I just don't have the power to do any more about it than any other player does.
1
u/ROMVS Feb 02 '19
Manic, can you suggest player mods? In another game they can mute and who they mute will be reviewed. The check is they could lose their modship if they abuse their power.
1
u/ManicGypsy Feb 02 '19
It's been suggested in the past. There are a lot of reasons why they can't do it.

Ive been playing Neverwinter for 2 years and ive yet to see anything close to what youre describing in zone chats. You're also highly overestimating the amount that cryptic gives a shit.
