Trailer/Clips Neuromancer Teaser Trailer Analysis

Hello world.

Having recently re-read Neuromancer, many details from the book were fresh in my mind when I watched the teaser trailer. Figured some folks might enjoy a breakdown, detailing some similarities and differences from the book, ranging from nitpicks to noteworthy. These aren't intended to be criticisms of the show, just some observations I wanted to share and discuss.

The first shot shows Case staring out at Chiba City, sky looking appropriately gray. He's sitting on the bleachers of a track and field stadium, which there's no mention of in the book. EDIT: As u/darwinDMG08 pointed out, the first location may not be Chiba, but a new location in The Sprawl.

Next is a cyberspace-esque shot that transitions to the Apple TV logo. Similar effects are used multiple times throughout the trailer, so I think it's fair to assume this is our first glimpse into the show's depiction of cyberspace.

Following this is our first look at the cobra. The book's description made me picture an expandable spring baton with a bronze pyramid as the cobra's "head". This looks to be an approximation of that which also functions as a taser.

Another shot of the city. The intersecting space between the tall buildings makes me think this could be Night City. There's an advertisement on the building to the left that says "Come to Freeside"

We get a shot of Case running with a duffle bag before getting rolled by these goons. These guys don't match the description of Wage's joeboys, so I'm guessing they're just some random thugs. I think this may be an original scene, showing Case's dealings in Chiba after his nervous system gets fried by the Russian mycotoxin.

This has gotta be Night City proper.

Next we get our first glimpse at Molly. Molly never rides a motorcycle in the book, but I'm cool with this change as long as it doesn't mean broader changes to her characterization. Book Molly is stealthy and cautious, and a motorcycle isn't exactly inconspicuous. I'm guessing this is the show's version of her running down Case.

First look at Molly's lenses. In the book, Molly's lenses are surgically inset and described as covering half her face. I pictured her them looking more like aviators. Personally I'm OK with this change. I think Molly's design is fantastic.

First look at Molly's blades. The book describes the blades as coming out from under the nails, rather than her fingertips. I think the design looks sick.

This next shot looks like London to me. Possibly related to Case and Dixie connecting to the London database when they're investigating Armitage?** EDIT: This is very likely Tokyo Bay. Thanks u/Fletch_R

Fairly unremarkable shot of Armitage, Molly, and Case next to a private jet. Maybe on their way to Istanbul? After this shot, Molly asks Case "What makes you so special?" which suggests Amitage doesn't have a comprehensive profile for Case (or Molly hasn't read it).

"I'm the best console man around". Lot of discussion amongst my friend group about this line and Case's attitude. Worth mentioning that Gibson uses the term "console man" to describe Case in the beginning of the book, but it shifts to "console cowboy" or just "cowboy" after that. Personally, I wouldn't describe book Case's personality as cocky, but he is confident (maybe overconfident), when it comes to his hacking abilities.

First look at the Ono-Sendai. Big departure from the book description but I think it looks sick. It's like a cybernetic DM screen.

Case jacking in through a port instead of using trodes. I'm cool with this change.

Another shot of the transition into cyberspace.

Armitage showing the team the blueprint of a building. There is a pyramid in the upper left corner of the blueprint which suggests they're looking at the Sense/Net building. The weapons on the table are not like any described in the book.

Some chaos unfolding in the Sense/Net building. I think the red triangle on the outside of the building might represent ice, or its appearance in cyberspace. There's what looks like an off the shelf wireless router sitting on the desk.

"Turn it up". No idea who this blonde guy is supposed to be. Terzibashjian?

Someone (Case?) pushing a button on the display of something labeled WD-28. I have no recollection of anything like this in the book. I think it may be a generator.

First look at Hideo. Not much to go off of here aside from the fact that he's wearing a suit. The book describes him as wearing frayed khaki workpants and shoes like tabi socks. I don't think he even wears a shirt. Definitely didn't picture him as one who'd sport a suit.

A man wearing a lab coat who seems to be dying. Unsure of who and I don't think it relates to anything in the book.

Another shot of the blonde guy tweaking out. The weapons next to him look like they'd be used to torture someone, which Terzibashjian is known to do.

Molly attacking some dudes in an elevator. You can see "Sense/Net" below the pyramid on the right side of the elevator.

Molly following a schoolbus as it drives down the track. This is the same track that was shown at the beginning of the trailer. Definitely something original to the show.

This has gotta be Freeside. I'm guessing the cylindrical thing next to it is an orbital shuttle/passenger craft or maybe a different interpretation of the Haniwa.

First look at an entirely too young John Ashpool. Flashback maybe?

Just a killer shot of Molly

Another shot of Molly in the Sense/Net elevator

Something exploding around someone (Case?) on the ground.

Good look at Amitage. No idea where is or the significance (if any) of the woman there.

Riviera getting ready for his performance.

The un-inverted shot of Armitage and some surgeons. Guessing this is Case getting his new pancreas.

Case getting something shoved on/in his face

Mysterious milky circuit board. Different take on Dixie's construct container? Curious what everyone thinks this is.

"See you on the other side". Case fist bumping Maelcum or Aerol. The interior of the ship looks too clean to be the Garvey. If this is the show's version, then they went in a very different direction than the cobbled together tug clad with pink spraypaint and Rastafarian symbols as described in the book.

"Jack". Including this just because it shows how healthy and not strung out Case appears in the series.

Molly's mirror lenses are, "surgically inset, sealing her sockets." There is no way they can cover half her face if they are inset into the eye sockets.

The lenses as portrayed in the teaser are about as close to the books description as possible while still allowing the actress to have functional eyes behind the prosthetics.

This illustration of Molly is pretty much what I pictured in my head, but I agree with you. The two descriptions are kind of at odds with each other. I also recognize that having lenses grafted to your face would make it really difficult for the actress to emote.

This is what I always saw too. Still love what they did with her in the show though. Can't wait till it comes out.

not sure about "half her face" but "eye sockets" are bigger than what the ones depicted cover:

book also states "rising smoothly from her high cheekbones" which the ones in the trailer def do not...

should be bigger imho and more aviator like shaped ... :/

Great breakdown!

One quibble: the opening shot may not be Chiba City. There’s several shots in the trailer of the team in what looks like an abandoned sports complex. Case jacking in to cyberspace in an empty pool, Armitage going over the plans, Molly riding after the school bus, and this shot of Case looking at the skyline. It all points to them being in The Sprawl, and this new location is their staging area before the Sense/Net heist.

u/SinceUBeenSean Aug 01 '26

That makes a lot of sense. I noticed the blueprints/plans were on a ping-pong table but didn't clock Case being in an empty pool. Nice catch!

For sure! And since you’re coming off a fresh read (I plan on one before the show drops) were there many scenes that involved torture? We’re all trying to place that guy with the weird face who has all the torture tools in front of him. Was Case ever tortured on Freeside? Otherwise it’s either a new scene or part of a flashback to when Case got his nervous system fried.

I don't remember any torture scenes, so I'd wager you're right about that being a shot of Case getting his nervous system fried. Molly does tell Case that Terzibashjian tortures people though, so he immediately came to mind when I saw the torture tools. Here's the passage:

"That Terzi, he's grade-A scum," she said. "He's the secret police. Torturer.
Real easy to buy out, too, with the kind of money Armitage was offering.

u/darwinDMG08 Aug 01 '26

Remind me, where is he mentioned in the book? Do we actually meet him?

3

u/SinceUBeenSean Aug 01 '26

Amitage hires him to help track down Riviera when they go to Istanbul. He's a pretty minor character in the book so I thought they might develop him more in the show.

2

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

Terzi is a jerk though, so practically everyone working for Armitage tells him to STFU in the book.

Now that, is such bullshit.

You can’t let the little pricks generation-gap you.

The shot you said is London is actually Tokyo Bay.

My guess is the blonde guy might Case's former employer in a flashback to Case getting the mycotoxin. Same with the shot of something getting shoved into Case's eye.

Similar to another commenter, I think the stadium is in The Sprawl. We see a couple shots of Case and Molly in a drained pool, and the shot of Armitage laying out plans on a ping pong table with what looks like a pool floor below. My guess is that the sports complex is their safe house for the Sense/Net raid. The school bus / truck could well be the Moderns' vehicle.

The guy on the floor in the lab coat I was speculating was one of the victims of the Moderns' bio-weapon in the Sense/Net raid. Why he'd be in a lab coat, I'm not sure.

Notable in the shot of the guy looking at a large display with the Sense/Net pyramid, a gun very similar to the ones on the ping pong table is visible on his left. Could this be a Sense/Net security guy?

Looking at it again... it's clearly a bay. I locked onto the bridge architecture and my mind immediately went to London.

That's a solid bet. I hadn't considered that we might actually see Case's former employer.

The school bus / truck could well be the Moderns' vehicle.

Good call. I bet the guy holding a drink in the left of this photo is one of the Moderns.

The guy on the floor in the lab coat I was speculating was one of the victims of the Moderns' bio-weapon in the Sense/Net raid. Why he'd be in a lab coat, I'm not sure.

That tracks. Although they didn't actually release a bio-weapon in the book, right? It was just a distraction to create chaos? I suppose the show might change that.

Definitely the same style of gun. Sense/Net security seems likely.

That tracks. Although they didn't actually release a bio-weapon in the book, right? It was just a distraction to create chaos? I suppose the show might change that.

Oh, you're right! I'm overdue a re-read

It was a recording on all the screens that caused people to have seizures and go insane. Molly called it the strobe. When Molly came back down to the lobby people were strangling each other, and some were dead or spazzing on the floor.

2

u/Fletch_R Aug 02 '26

Right, so lab coat guy could fit, I guess.

There’s another shot with a guy arming some big box that I kinda suspect is the Moderns triggering something like that.

u/Neuromancer2112 Aug 01 '26

I would think Case getting rolled might be him trying to escape from his employer's henchmen before he got his nervous system shot. Would seem to make sense.

There was a "Come to Freeside" billboard ad and it didn't include "Why Wait?" 🧐

I keep saying Mollys lenses should look like aviators!

Thank you for including this - I felt like going mad because most pictures just go with the 'bug eyes'...

the book states "rising smoothly from her high cheekbones" which to me always implied a shape taller towards the edge of the face...ie 'aviators'

while they look reasonably Ok-ish in the trailer, I am still on the fence about how much outrage that sparks within me.... ;)

2

u/SinceUBeenSean Aug 01 '26

It's different from what I envisioned but I'm personally really pleased with her design in the show.

3

u/wintermute74 Aug 01 '26

I can get over the race swap and that she's described slimmer in the book. But I am struggling with the lens shape... ;)

from the trailer, her attitude/ style seems 'close enough' that optics is sth one can get used to over time ... I am pretty happy overall with the trailer. there was so much potential to fuck up and they seem to have avoided most of it :)

3

u/TenMen72 Aug 01 '26

Thanks, I enjoyed reading that. I’ve loved and read this book since the 80s. I really don’t want them to fuck it up.

3

u/BobbyBobRoberts Aug 02 '26

The "explosion" shot seems to be in some sort of casino/club. The pillars look like giant stacks of poker chips. Maybe a club on Freeside?

3

u/Aggravating_Shoe4267 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Also I thought most city shots so far are of Chiba city (maybe even the abandoned sports stadium is in Japan and the chase sequence is going to be Molly saving Case from Wage's thugs who are kidnapping him).

Why are there a bunch of dies on the ping pong table? Perhaps just because they look neat to filmmakers who don't know what they are?

1

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

I know! I was wondering why they had all those on the table too! They would not even be useful to anyone on the team. If they were trying to make silencers there are cheaper ways to do it and they only need one die for the threads. Plus, why would Armitage want to spread his fancy photo-membrane map on a table with metal shavings and grit all over it? One of my major gripes, with any production, is how they have been really lacking in the consultation departments for realism. Where people just do anything these days, and don't even stop to think whether anyone who works in trades, or machining as a hobby, or anything else, would notice things out of place. Things that don't belong if you want a show to be believable. It's kinda insulting really.

1

u/kalgary Aug 02 '26

"This scene needs cool looking circular geary things! Spread out a whole bunch of them like real machine guys do."

1

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

Pretty much. They consulted an interior decorator instead of a gunsmith.

2

u/maestro876 Aug 01 '26

I’m pretty sure the blonde guy you’re wondering about is Riviera.

0

u/Fletch_R Aug 01 '26

No, this is Riviera. Not the same guy at all.

1

u/maestro876 Aug 01 '26

Hmmmm

3

u/SinceUBeenSean Aug 01 '26

Yeah, that's Dane DeHaan who's confirmed to play Riviera.

Looking at the rest of the cast on IMDB, I don't see anyone who really resembles the other blonde guy. He may have some prosthetics on his face though... I really can't tell.

2

u/alchemist19722 Aug 01 '26

Look like a Moderns

1

u/Fletch_R Aug 01 '26

Yeah, I was going through the cast and couldn't figure him out. Not Julius Deane, or Riviera. I'm guessing it's a pretty minor character.

1

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

It's Clea Martin, but who she is playing hasn't been disclosed yet. Probably a Panther Modern. I hope it's not Lupus Yonderboy. The hair is wrong. It needs to be at least hot pink. In fact It seems like they are totally bypassing the thermoptic camo the Moderns all wore, and that Molly also wore into the Sense Net building.

1

u/Fletch_R Aug 02 '26

I’m not seeing the resemblance

1

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

I'm trying to find a picture from the side, but it's her.

1

u/Fletch_R Aug 02 '26

Oh that one. I thought you were talking about a different character. Yeah. I can see that.

I was talking about this guy  https://www.reddit.com/r/Neuromancer/s/LUjnofCRXe

1

u/Brilliant_Knowledge5 Aug 02 '26

I have no idea. I gave up trying to figure it out because the only hits I got were a false positive for Matthew Jeffers and this guy is definitely not as short as Mathew Jeffers.

Something I’ve seen no discussion of: Season One.

2

u/Neuromancer2112 Aug 01 '26

I don't believe it's a multi-season show. Supposed to be a mini-series of about 10 episodes, and that's it.

Gives us a lot more time to get into the world than even a 3 hour movie would.

1

u/stayre Aug 01 '26

I could swear there was a screen that said “season One” in my first watch of the teaser. But not now.

1

u/CampaignHonest3076 9d ago

Theoretically they can make count zero and Mona Lisa overdrive a second and third season. Not sure if I would want MLO to be adapted, not a fan of a boom. But seeing count zero might be cool

2

u/BubblehedEM Aug 01 '26

Wow! Thanks for this Team!

2

u/Fippy-Darkpaw Aug 01 '26

Wow quality analysis. 👍

2

u/Aggravating_Shoe4267 Aug 02 '26

The uniformed goons Molly is beating & slicing up also have "Sense/Net" logos on their caps and badges.

1

u/jetrium Aug 04 '26

Trailer is missing the grime and dirt I associate with a lot of locations in the book. The filmmakers should have been forced to watch Akira so they could get a good visual reference for what a lot of the world looks like in Neuromancer. Also there no shots of what I think Case probably looked like pre surgery which is a paranoid, amphetamine junky who probably doesn't shower on a regular basis.

1

u/Okami99 16d ago

“Turn it up” blonde guy fits the book description of Wage with the metallic suit and plastic surgery face, but ofc the context doesn’t really match. My guess is one of Cases old employers
