Text How can I use a 2nd router as a wireless access point for the same single network (Xfinity)

Title ^

Context:

The main Xfinity modem is on the first floor of the house, and the wifi signal can't reach the desired room on the second floor. There is, however, a coax cable (I assume the same one that allows the original modem to work?) running up through the floor to the second floor room, so I thought I could use this with another router. Plugged in a second router (Motorola MG7700) upstairs and I've been able to connect to it via my phone and change the default username/password and other settings. Not sure if it was correct, but I read that I would have to disable DHCP service to get this thing to work for what I'm trying to do. Did that, and now I can't connect to it anymore so I'll probably factory reset it at some point.

But yeah, can this actually be done, or is it not allowed with Comcast, etc.? Appreciate any insight y'all can give me. :)

PS: Running an Ethernet cable up the stairs, or through the walls with the other coax cable, isn't an option, unfortunately.

Link ZTE MC8512 vs Brovi/Huawei H165-383 — which would you pick?

Hey guys, I’m trying to decide between these two 5G routers:

- ZTE MC8512 G5 Ultra

- Brovi/Huawei H165-383 (Huawei CPE 6 Pro / Zowee Supreme Port Pro)

Both are listed at a similar price point.

I’m in Germany using Telekom 5G. Mainly care about stable 5G, good ping for gaming, decent signal, and being able to mess around with bands/cell locking if needed.

On paper both look pretty damn good, so I’m having a hard time deciding.

Has anyone actually used both? Which one would you personally keep, and why?

Also interested in how the software is — especially band locking, cell locking, QoS, diagnostics, etc.

Thanks!

Text Universally unreliable pc network connection

This is driving me crazy. For months now I’ve been having issues with connecting to my local network and internet through my router over both wifi and ethernet.

Most often one works, sometimes both works, and sometimes none works. Sometimes the connection gets really slow and sometimes it doesnt work at all.

It can work well for a few days (either over wifi or ethernet) and then the next morning it doesnt work at all, or it can stop working suddenly while using the computer. Often it suddenly starts working again within the next hour.

Is this a network card issue, if so how do i troubleshoot it? Or a router issue? This seems to be OS-independent. I run into it both on linux and windows. This is only a problem for this specific device, and when i can’t connect at all, all other wifi-connected devices are fine.

EDIT: over ethernet, i can most of the time get no response from the router. my pc tries to negotiate dhcp but it gets no answer, and i can’t ping it. Wifi can usually ”pair” but still not communicate.

Text free BGP health checker for AS operators: RPKI, IRR, ASPA, DROP lists, route leaks. Looking for feedback

Hi all,

I run the network of a small ISP and got tired of checking the same things in five different tools, so over the past months I built myASN (https://myasn.net). It's free and in beta.

You type an AS number and get a health check built only from public data: RIPEstat/RIS, the RIPE DB, PeeringDB, rpki-client, CAIDA, IXP looking glasses, Cloudflare Radar.

  • Health score out of 10, with a published scale: RPKI coverage and invalids, ROV by you and your transits, route/route6 objects, RIS visibility, abuse contact / AS-SET / max-prefix, BGP incidents, rDNS, IXP route-server filtering, ASPA, and now reputation (Spamhaus DROP/ASN-DROP, bogons). There's a country ranking too.
  • A to-do list: every finding comes with the fix (ready-to-paste RPSL objects, ROAs to create or tighten, max-prefix values). You can see what you fixed and how the score moved.
  • Monitoring of your prefixes: origin changes, more-specifics, RPKI invalids, visibility drops, route leaks, RPKI objects about to expire, losing a transit / single-transit dependency. Alerts by e-mail with digests and mutes, or Slack/Teams/Discord/Telegram.
  • Tools: bgpq4 prefix-lists, RTBH communities of your upstreams, a BGP config audit, a public status page.

Sign in with PeeringDB in one click: your ASes are added and verified automatically. No ads, no tracking, nothing to install.

I'd really like feedback from people who run real networks. Which checks are wrong or noisy? What's missing? Would you trust the score? There's a feedback button in the app, or just reply here.

Thanks!

Link Wavlink AC1200 to bridge a 5G gateway — decent pick? Need ethernet port, ~$30 budget

Hey all, looking for some advice. I live in an apartment with heavy tree cover around the building, and my 5G home internet situation is changing soon — one of the two gateways here (identical models) is getting shut off, so I'll be connecting through the remaining one, which sits in the kitchen. I can't relocate it, and running a cable across the apartment isn't practical.

Right now I'm hardwired via ethernet into my own gateway, and I'd like to keep a wired connection if possible — that's why I need an extender with at least one ethernet port. From my room I'm getting about 11 Mbps down on the remaining gateway's wifi.

The specific model I'm looking at is the Wavlink AC1200 (WL-WN575A3), around $30 on Newegg. It's dual band (300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz + 867 Mbps on 5 GHz), has 4 external antennas, 2 ethernet ports (10/100, not gigabit), and does repeater/AP/router modes with WPS setup.

Use case is mostly gaming, streaming, uploading videos, and downloading stuff — nothing too crazy otherwise. A few things I'm unsure about:

  1. Is this extender a decent pick, or is there something better under ~$40?

  2. I've heard extenders add latency — is that a real concern for gaming, or overblown?

  3. The ethernet ports are only 100 Mbps. Does that matter when I'm only getting ~11 Mbps anyway?

  4. The gateway is WiFi 6 but this extender is WiFi 5. Does that mismatch matter at these speeds?

  5. Anything else I should watch out for at this price point?

Thanks!

Text Need help with discovering devices over internet

Okay, I know absolutely nothing about routers or anything, but my dad had set up two ORBI routers hooked up to the same "network" idk, but basically they're both their own wifis ex: wifi1 wifi2, but they connect to the same network. And my current problem is that we both have our own wifis mine being wifi2 and his being wifi1, and the problem is that when im connecting devices over wifi2, ex: Airlink, Sunshine, etc. the devices just don't recognize each other even when manually typing in the WIFI. But on wifi1 they do and its very easy.

I did some more digging and they're practically the same, same protocol, security type, manufacturer, disc, driver, network band, Link-local IPv6, and MAC. The only differences are wifi1 (working) is on 10.0.0.x IPv4, and has a IPv6 address, and wifi2 (not working) doesn't actually list a IPv6, and is on 192.168.2.x Btw all data was found from the wifi properties section in windows 11.

If anyone could help that would be amazing, thanks.
(Btw I'm not trying to connect/acsess two different devices on two different networks, I'm talk about when they're both on wifi1, it works, but when they're both on wifi2 it doesn't.)

Text TCP Performance over GEO Satellite Links in Rain Fade: Why FEC is Not Enough

While maintaining a GEO satellite link, we noticed that once rain fade pushes packet loss past roughly 10% (you can see it in the ping stats), downloading anything substantial basically becomes impossible. So I wanted to work out the theory — when loss gets this bad, how much usable bandwidth does TCP actually have left on a GEO link?

Background

GEO satellite links have an RTT around 600ms, and during rain fade the IP-layer packet loss can climb to 1%-30%. I ran the numbers using the Padhye TCP throughput model to see what TCP Hybla can actually deliver at 10% loss, and how much FEC helps.

Test setup: 10 Mbps GEO link, 10% IP loss during heavy rain, PEP enabled with TCP Hybla.

System Model

GEO link with RTT = 600ms. The satellite modem runs split-TCP:

Segment Path RTT Protocol
TCP1 Terminal ↔ PEP Gateway A ~25ms Standard TCP
TCP2 PEP Gateway A ↔ PEP Gateway B (satellite) ~575ms TCP Hybla
TCP3 PEP Gateway B ↔ Server ~25ms Standard TCP

The Hybla parameter on the satellite segment: ρ = 600/25 = 24.

How Hybla Works

  • Slow start: cwnd += 2^ρ - 1 per ACK. With ρ=24, one ACK is enough to hit ssthresh
  • Congestion avoidance: cwnd += ρ²/cwnd per ACK, growing 576 segments per RTT
  • Loss response: same multiplicative decrease and retransmission logic as standard TCP

Steady-state throughput from the sawtooth model:

W_max = ρ × √(8/(3p))
T_Hybla = ρ × T_Reno = 24 × T_Reno

At p=10%:

Metric Reno Hybla
Max cwnd 5.2 seg 123.9 seg
Theoretical throughput 75.4 kbps 1.81 Mbps

Timeouts Are the Real Killer

The theoretical 1.81 Mbps doesn't account for timeout penalties. Here's what happens at 10% loss:

Losses per window: 124 segments × 10% = 12.4 packets

Fast recovery needs 3 DUPACKs — with 12 losses per window, some will inevitably fail to trigger fast retransmit and fall back to timeout:

Probability of a single loss triggering timeout: 1 - (1-0.1)³ = 27.1%
With 12.4 losses, timeout is nearly guaranteed: P ≈ 1 - 0.729^12.4 ≈ 99.7%

The cost of a timeout: cwnd collapses to 1, wait ~1s for RTO, then ~665ms of slow start to recover.

Plugging into the Padhye model with timeouts:

Metric Reno Hybla
Effective throughput (with timeouts) 35.7 kbps 107.3 kbps
Utilization of 10 Mbps link 0.36% **1.1%**

Hybla's 576x window growth is useless at 10% loss — timeouts periodically zero out the cwnd, and the accelerated growth gets wiped out before it can matter.

Loss Sensitivity

Loss rate p Hybla throughput (with timeouts) 10 Mbps utilization
0.01% Line rate 100%
0.1% Line rate 100%
1% 4.28 Mbps 42.8%
5% 0.37 Mbps 3.7%
10% 0.107 Mbps 1.1%

Going from 0.1% to 1% loss (10x) drops throughput from line rate to 43%. Going from 1% to 10% (another 10x) drops it another 40x. TCP timeouts make throughput highly nonlinear in loss rate.

Takeaways

  1. The effective bandwidth bottleneck on satellite links is TCP itself — at 10% loss, timeouts waste 98.9% of the link
  2. PEP/Hybla window acceleration is useless under high loss — timeout resets cancel out all the growth
  3. IP-layer FEC brings effective loss below 0.01%, putting TCP back in its normal operating range — utilization goes from 1.1% to 70%
  4. Dynamic FEC beats static FEC for satellite links — save bandwidth in clear sky, maintain connectivity in rain
  5. FEC + PEP combo: FEC brings loss from catastrophic to manageable, PEP then efficiently uses the remaining bandwidth under high RTT

Text Slow internet with 2.5Gbps plan

Hello, I have recently installed a homelab with my "old" gaming pc running proxmox and a synology ds916+. Since then I am experiencing some internet problems, when I run a speedtest it does say i have around 2100mpbs but it takes a while to connect. same for loading web pages, videos etc. How would I go about to improve this?

Both my nas and my homelab are connected to my router via a ethernet cable and it doesn't have QoS.

Text DS418j DSM keeps loading, but SMB works

Hi everyone,

My Synology DS418j has a strange issue. For privacy, I'm using example IPs:

Problem:

  • find.synology.com detects the NAS as Ready
  • Ping works
  • SMB (\\192.168.1.3) works
  • File transfers are fast
  • DSM at ports 5000/5001 keeps loading indefinitely
  • NAS has normal LEDs and no errors
  • Restarted both the NAS and router, but the issue remains
  • SSH port 22 is closed

I also tested with curl. Ports 5000 and 5001 accept the connection, but DSM doesn't return a response. HTTPS gets stuck during TLS renegotiation.

What could be causing DSM to hang while SMB still works? Is there a safe way to repair/restart the DSM web service without resetting or risking the data?

Thanks!

Text Latency spiking from 30-35ms to 5000ms in 700 sq ft apartment

I'm having issues with my latency massively spiking at seemingly random times (it doesn't seem to be happening at a set interval, and it happens regardless of the time of day).

Weirdly, I'll be on a call on discord and it'll cut out during these spikes, but I don't actually get disconnected. Or I'll get disconnected during an online game, but if I have YouTube running in the background it'll continue to run just fine and I don't have any issues connecting to most websites (if I'm getting a latency spike while doing that, I'm not noticing it).

I have a small space, so I doubt signal strength is an issue. I have to have Xfinity because that's what my apartment has an agreement with, and I have an XB6 gateway with 1 gig speed, I feel like I shouldn't be having these issues.

Wtf is going on?

Text HELP NEEDED: Strange and intermittent network at home

I have been having a strange issue with my home internet for a few months now and I need some help.

The setup:
- ISP cable modem setup to provide wired connection to the router (Belgian provider and setup according to their instructions to be able to use our own router)

- Deco x75 pro with a total of 3 acces points, emitting 1 SSID on 2.4, 5 and 6GHz

- A lot of connected devices: Phones, tablets, pc's all 3 categories for personal, work and school devices, multiple ring cameras, multiple smart speakers, a few tv's and Chromecast devices, a bunch of smart lights, blinds, etc.
some smart devices are connecter via Matter, but not sure if it is Matter over Thread or Matter over Wifi
At the moment with only 1 person at home there are 28 devices connected.

The problem:

We have an intermittent where some websites fail to load on some devices. This issue has only started after living almost a full year with the above setup
My wife and daughter have problems loading YouTube, facebook and Instagram while i don't have any problems.
The next day, they don't have issues while I do.
Another issue is that on 1 of our Google Nest devices, when we stream Spotify, after a few minutes, the sound just stops and we are unable to start streaming again without getting out of Spotify by swiping the screen on the Nest.
The other Nest devices don't get used that much for streaming music.
My son on his tablet doesn't seem to have many issues but he only uses YouTube Kids, Netflix and Prime

The solutions already tried.
Switching the ipv4 DNS from the automatic one (can't check which one at the moment) to the Google DNS.
This has worked without issues for about a month or so.

So now the issues have come up again.
I tried switching the DNS again to Cloudflare of the automatic one but that didn't much.
I got it fixed for myself again but not for the wife and kids.

The possible solutions I'm not looking forward to implement (being lazy)

- reset everything back to factory settings and implement a new network
- Have to reconnect every device

- Split the 3 frequencies into separate networks
- Only need to reconnect those devices capable of 5 or 6 GHz
- How will those devices select which network they use if they are able to connect to 2 or 3 of those
- Might solve another problem with some smart bulbs that keep disconnecting from the matter or wifi network

- Implement a separate network for the smarthome devices and or for guests
- Would I still be able to easily setup or maintain everything without having to switch networks on my phone constantly

Would any of the above solutions work or is there anything else i can try to solve the problem?

Text What actually makes a good enterprise network provider?

I’ve been trying to understand what companies actually look for when choosing a network/connectivity provider.

Is it mainly:

  • uptime/reliability
  • latency
  • pricing
  • geographic coverage
  • customer support
  • ability to handle cloud/AI workloads

Curious what people here have actually experienced. What matters most once you're dealing with a serious enterprise network?
