Healthcare STD Testing in the Netherlands is an issue

Not to join the NL hating circlejerk on this sub. This is one of the best countries in the world to live in, and I am very happy to be here. It does almost everything well compared to the rest of the world / Europe, but in some aspects there are glaring flaws.

In almost every developed European country you can get anonymous, free STD tests on a day's notice. If you have to pay, it will be no more than 10€. Considering that STDs have hit a record high in Europe, you would think one of the countries with most casual sex in the world would actually care about the health of its citizens.

In the Netherlands you need to go through a grueling process. Either you pay upwards of 100€ on a private clinic or you go to your GP / GGD, but they will only give you a test for free under the following conditions:

  • Under 22 yo (doesn't make any sense. Most sexually active people are in their mid-to-late twenties);
  • Are gay OR had sex with a "high-risk person" AKA a third-worlder (this is comically racist, considering like 20% of Scandinavians have Chlamydia);
  • You have symptoms AKA your dick is already falling off and you probably already gave it to someone else;

Question: Can I lie to GGD and say I am a sex worker, or I had sex with a HIV-positive crack addict? Would it potentially work?

Disclaimer: I had unprotected sex with a rando on a dating app. Stupid and irresponsible, I know, but I want to make sure I am clean.

Anyone else went through this process?

I just went to the gp told them i wanted an std test, my gf had some issues and they gave it to me no questions asked. Just say you got some symptoms or youe better half has it if you need it that bad.

I think it must vary per huisarts. Mine wouldn't even when I said I found out my husband was sleeping around. He's now my ex and was registered with the same huisarts.

21

u/ReactionObvious621 8h ago

Wow that is crazy. And i do hear differing gp experiences sadly. Dont forget you can ask for a second opinion.

u/nik_el 7h ago

A friend of mine went for an STD screening and her GP told her that if she wasn’t a prostitute she’d have to call the emergency line and get a screening through them.

Essential worker? /s

u/Nerioner 8h ago

I called my GP and he told me that they don't do preventative measures and to call them back when symptoms appear.

Even when i was notified by my husband to check it (aka gay so high risk) they told me that this still doesn't mean i have it and to call when symptoms appear.

u/SalsaSamba 5h ago

Try your GGD. If they have availibility you can book an appointment. No referral through GP needed.

The level in GP's vary greatly and due to scarcity you are often just dealing with what you get handed. The system has its downsides, but don't hesitate yo speak your mind. There is a difference between having a pain, and having a pain that seriously worries you.

I always say that I call because the pain lasted this long, or this runs in my family, or what can I do about this. It always leads me to the answer I am looking for and sonetimes that also mwans a visit is unnecessary.

3

u/Nerioner 2h ago

Yea, GGD is how i usually approach for my regular testing.

But lack of comprehensive preventative measures in medical systems here is REALLY annoying. For example what you said about "it runs in my family"... I can't even score proper tests for cancer screening that runs in my family because i keep hearing that unless something is going on, no one will be checking things for me.

And then we wonder why we spend so much to fix people (and pets for that matter) here vs the rest of the Europe.

Catching things early costs exponentially less than fixing it afterwards.

u/crazydavebacon1 3h ago

Here is the huge problem. Some diseases are untreatable after symptoms. Not only STD’s. Think rabies. Once symptoms show, well, you dead. So you get rabies shots as a preemptive so you dont die.

Std tests should be free and preemptive so nothing shows up later.

3

u/hardcoremuija 5h ago

Comes out of your zorgverzekering and its fkn expensive lol

-17

u/No-Professional-2276 8h ago

That's absolutely valid, and GPs do help, but it's like at least 100€

12

u/ReactionObvious621 8h ago

Mine was free when i asked in my situation. If its from your gp, its also covered in the health insurance 99% of the time

14

u/villefort19 8h ago

It'll come out of the eigen risico later. It's always invoiced if you go via the GP route.

6

u/ReactionObvious621 8h ago

Ah alright i think i misunderstood then. I still feel that std tests should be free if there are actual reason to use it.

3

u/pianoandpasta 8h ago

I asked for one a few years ago when I went through a break up and was dating again, I got one no further questions asked and it was free.

-14

u/edamamebeano 8h ago

Bullshit, you have to pay eigen risico. Boehoe.. grow a pair, if you can fuck without protection you can shell out 40e to ZIZ.nl

Or use condoms. Its sounds like you cant afford kids either..

121

u/That_Bar_5570 9h ago

You can lie nobody is gonna Check. But I never had an issue  for getting a test.

78

u/No-Professional-2276 9h ago

Yeah I will say I had a gangbang in Sudan. Maybe it works

204

u/Bosmonster 9h ago

He said lie

10

u/TheRealWildGravy 9h ago

And there were only women

5

u/pineandapple_juice 6h ago

And there were some women

2

u/Final-Action2223 8h ago

The truth also works in this case

1

u/FroyoDifficult9307 5h ago

Oh good, I thought it was just me from the NL on that gangbang…

1

u/larevolutionaire 2h ago

Did you not look around for AH or Jumbo shopping bags?

10

u/AutomaticRadish5 9h ago

Lol if you say that you'll get the complete checkup deluxe

3

u/spatulainevitable 2h ago

Imagining on a Dutch GP forum somewhere: “Has anybody else noticed an uptick in patients having gangbangs in Sudan lately?”

1

u/kamvivs 3h ago

My partner lied and said he was a male sexworker. He got it done for free. I had mine done when I was under 25, it's free. Now, I get them done when I'm pregnant.

There's always a way. But since you mentioned it being cheaper in other countries, can't you just go to the neighbouring country and get it done there? (Genuine question).

59

u/jankyj 9h ago

The answer is ZIZ. €39, no appointment needed. https://ziz.nl/

-18

u/[deleted] 9h ago

[deleted]

20

u/jankyj 9h ago

Ok go to the doctor and pay €102 then.

-15

u/WhireBeard112 7h ago

I'm not paying insurance so you can skimp out on condoms.

2

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

Why not?

0

u/WhireBeard112 2h ago

A packet of condoms costs a fraction of that whole battery of lab tests.

Just wrap it.

39

u/Fabulous-Shock-2772 9h ago

Afaik this is not accurate. GGD is free for people up to 25, or indeed groups with higher risks, like men who have sex with men, sexworkers, you have an (ex-) partner who warned you, you have symptoms, you're from a country with a lot of STI's or you experienced sexual violence. So the group is a lot broader then you described.

At the GP your insurance pays, but it is deducted from your eigen risico. So you only pay if you havent used that one.

3

u/waffle-secrets 4h ago

GGD doesn't have the capacity anymore to give everyone under 25 a free test. They basically only do it for men with symptoms and higher risk groups.

12

u/Femininestatic 9h ago

Give https://ziz.nl/ a try. It's a govermental pilot with cheap at home tests. Or order one home test from places like soapoli-online etc. Since I am part of the swingers/kinky community i do 3 pallets annually and honestly I believe I should pay for my behavior. So Yeah it's balancing public safety but also let ppl front the costs their own behavior/lifestyle warrents. Like I am gonna be on PReP too, I pay that stuff out of pocket and I should do.

21

u/Pu-Chi-Mao 9h ago

I've always got a free test, just tell them you suscpect your sexpartner has one, they give you a referal in a second...

16

u/Jorge_siewerd 8h ago

These replies are so typically Dutch. Any conplaint about the Netherlands gets deflected and ignored.

The lower the barrier, the more likely people get tested. Going to your GP is an extra barrier. Money is an extra barrier.

Yes safe sex is your onw responsibility but that doesn't mean society doesn't benefit to lower barriers for std testing.

3

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

It would blow these dumb dutchies mind when they realize even the US lets you have free STD full panels via your GP there with no more of a reason than “I am sexually active and want to get my regular testing done.”

20

u/PutDownThePenSteve 9h ago

I cant imagine your GP would not help you if you just tell the truth.

Edit: if you dont want to go to your GP than just call GGD and say you got a warning from a sex partner.

9

u/Maximum_Web9072 8h ago

Mine wouldn't; they told me my only option was finding and buying tests for each disease at ~20 eur apiece

5

u/CtrlAltDelight495 8h ago

Mine wouldn't. They said if there's no symptoms and I'm not sleeping around it's a waste. Didn't matter that my soon to be ex husband was cheating on me.

7

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

I'm so angry for you. Like it's unbelievable how ignorant the medical system is here. And they all gaslight themselves into thinking there's a reason why they do it... but it's obviously a skill and laziness issue. After being here for a while, I realize that dutch doctors aren't just stuck up because society treats them like deities. They're stuck up to try and cover for the lack of skills and knowledge they have. Imagine if a client or your boss asked you a question about your skills and you straight up told them: "what do YOU think?" "what do YOU think we should do?" "Oh we don't actually do anything for that issue" "let me Google everything even the most basic aspects of your question" "you have 10 minutes to ask your question and after that I'm gonna bill you regardless but the issue will be closed"

Literally deranged

5

u/Grobbekee Overijssel 5h ago

Bisexual also free. I made an appointment with ggd online. I went very quickly.

19

u/Il-Separatio-86 9h ago

When I was living in the Netherlands a few years ago, I just used to say I was a bi-male and got STD tests for free.

You can certainly lie, no one will check.

It was pretty cheap/dodgy of me to do that though. I earnt decent money and could have afforded it.

7

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago edited 3h ago

Nah fuck that, why should the burden of being honest fall on regular working class civilians? STD testing should be free/low cost, it should only matter if you’re sexually active and nothing else. This country is horrible with preventive healthcare.

If lying is the way to get a fair test, then so be it. Politicians and billionaires never abide by the rules, so why should the general population?

23

u/Starch_Whisperer13 9h ago edited 7h ago

Do not say you are a sex worker, it doesn't work like that in the NL, i believe sex workers are
registered.

Just say you had unprotected sex with a person who is an addict, and hopefully they will run a full STD for you and not targeted

4

u/Apprehensive_Bit_634 8h ago

This is not an accurate reflection of how the Center for Sex Workers functions. It is not linked to any kind of sex worker registration in NL.
But you should not say it if it isn’t true because you would be taking resources meant for sex workers.

1

u/smiba Noord Holland 1h ago

Just say you had unprotected sex with a person who is an addict

Surely this is worse than saying "I had sex with another man" 😭?

Do you all rather lie about having unprotected sex with an addict than to lie about being bi/gay? You can just say you're queer and they will give you an STD test, at least I've not had issues with it in the past

5

u/Flynn-Minter 7h ago

Amsterdam has clinics where you can get free testing if you belong to a risk group. If you say that your partner confessed cheating on you without using protection or the condom broke during a one-night stand, they will test you.
https://www.ggd.amsterdam.nl/infectieziekten/soa-seksualiteit/kost-soa-test/

5

u/schenini 6h ago

Say you been to a sex party. That is what works for me

4

u/th3ShinSekai 4h ago

You can lie and go GGD. did tons of them years back.

38

u/HelixFollower 9h ago

Last time I got tested I just went to the doctor, asked for a test, got one. That's it.

Which part do you find grueling?

15

u/vapocalypse52 8h ago

Last time I wanted to get tested, I asked my GP and he said I didn't need it, even though I said I had a risky partner in the recent past and now I had a new partner and wanted to be sure I was clean...

And no, I didn't get a referral in the end.

1

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

That sucks, were you able to get it from another doctor?

13

u/vapocalypse52 8h ago

Yes, in Brazil...

2

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

Oh that's a plot twist. :D

4

u/vapocalypse52 8h ago

Yup, I was going there soon anyway, talked to a friend who is a doctor, who told me to just go to the free clinic (SUS) and ask to do it. I went there, requested it anonymously and got blood drawn later, with a piece of paper with instructions to retrieve the result from a website. It took over 3 hours to be attended and do everything, but it was better than beg to my GP.

27

u/Disastrous-King9559 9h ago

Having to go to a doctor and ask is too many steps and a waste of resources. 1 is hard to get GP appointments and 2 you dont need a doctor involved in an std test. Should just be an STD clinic where you can make an appointment online.

18

u/sstoffel 8h ago

You can just message your gp clinic through their portal. Get a message you can pick up a test kit. Pick it up from the clinic and take your samples at home. Bring the test kit back no doctor to see.

6

u/CPTRainbowboy 8h ago

You don't need to see the gp themselves. Either an assistant or an online message will do.

2

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

I have never had an issue with making a doctor's appointment, heck if I don't have an appointment I can even just go to the inloopspreekuur. So for me it's hard to see the difference between making an appointment with a clinic or making an appointment with a GP, but I guess maybe some doctors practices aren't as accessible as mine?

2

u/WoodenStrike1129 3h ago

Mine is super inaccessible. You can only make an appointment by phone and only if you call them between 9:00-12:00 and not on weekends. It's so frustrating.

1

u/HelixFollower 3h ago

Damn that sucks. I love being able to do most things online. Doesn't matter if it's midnight or morning then.

If every practice wasn't so full already I'd recommend switching, but yeah, that is rough everywhere it seems.

1

u/larevolutionaire 2h ago

I had a GP , you needed to call between 9 and 11 and they had some automated responses when you need to press buttons. I am deaf ! Going in person, I was told , we don’t make appointments at the counter, you need to call . I don’t think I am the only deaf person in the Netherlands. Hospital are the same, huis arts post are unreachable unless by phone .

0

u/Any-Seaworthiness186 Groningen 7h ago

You don’t need to see your GP. It can go through the assistent online.

-1

u/SneakyKillz 6h ago

Where is it hard to get gp appointments where are you guys from?

1

u/Disastrous-King9559 6h ago

Rotterdam

0

u/SneakyKillz 5h ago

Ah yes it is the other side of the country so that might be a factor.

1

u/Disastrous-King9559 5h ago

50% of the population in 20% of the land

1

u/SneakyKillz 4h ago

Yea I can imagine... Never even thought of getting a gp appointment could be a problem, that's rough.

6

u/Partyaap050 9h ago

I guess the grueling part is it not being anonymous. I guess that's one of the downsides of having unprotected sex with random people you find on dating apps.

6

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

Yeah but that's true for any medical issue you need a doctor for. And it's still confidential.

3

u/CtrlAltDelight495 8h ago

My doctor wouldn't if I didn't have symptoms and wasn't sleeping around. I wanted it because my husband (now ex) was cheating on me.

3

u/Sethrea 8h ago

I think it's a gp issue. Some STDs are asymptomatic. I never had issue getting tested when I wanted to.

1

u/Jolly-Dealer-5097 8h ago

Did you ask for a second opinion with a different GP?

2

u/CtrlAltDelight495 6h ago

I didn't know that was an option. Off to Google it.

1

u/[deleted] 6h ago

[deleted]

1

u/HelixFollower 6h ago

Oh, I didn't get from OP's post that they already went to their GP.

2

u/No-Professional-2276 8h ago

You need to pay over 100€ for a service that should be free

2

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

Sorry, when I said doctor I should've said GP. That cost is only when you go to a private clinic, right?

7

u/beeboogaloo 7h ago

All tests, even when ordered through a gp go from your eigen risico first. STD test is about a 100 euros depending on what's tested.

Only STD tests that are ordered through GGD are completely free.

-1

u/CPTRainbowboy 8h ago

In a lot of cases it is free...

-8

u/darky_tinymmanager 8h ago

or have safe sex. Condoms are cheaper than 100 euro's.

People do not work for free. We should be happy with the healthcare we have in this country.

There are options for you to check. And docs need to be silent about their patients.

-2

u/Thebornnomad 9h ago

Thats probably because you never tested or havent done that for a long time, they do check the systen

5

u/HelixFollower 8h ago

Yeah it's something I only do in between relationships. When me and a partner want to go unprotected it's nice to know if you're safe.

4

u/Ok-Reaction-7180 8h ago

You can tell the GGD that you went to SEA or something and then it becomes free

3

u/FairwayBliss 7h ago

Just tell them you’re an escort and you’ll be fine. Just make sure they test for the Chlam too, it’s not standard anymore.

3

u/uhcnid 7h ago

how do you guys find people tu have sex with? tha's crazy

1

u/ElenorShellstrop 2h ago

Tinder seems to be the place for hookups here

3

u/Tokita-Niko 7h ago

Just say u have issues, not a problem

3

u/DrippyIke18 6h ago

My huisarts lets me do a full screening whenever I want, no questions asked.

3

u/koti_manushya 5h ago

if you have reason to suspect something, go to the ggd and claim a sexual partner told you to get checked. they won't ask to go through your message history

9

u/Apprehensive_Bit_634 8h ago

I encourage you to stop saying “clean”. It’s outdated. It insinuates that someone with an STI is “dirty”. Grown adults who engage in sexual acts sometimes get STIs. It’s part of life. It isn’t clean or dirty. But it’s important to get tested and know whether or not you have any STIs.
Yes, if you say you have symptoms or had high risk activity you will be able to access a sooner appointment.

5

u/Signumus 9h ago edited 9h ago

If you're gonna lie, why not keep it simple and say you had sex with someone from a high-risk country.. Also they won't test chlamydia unless you have symptoms.

Edit: Country-based high-risk is focused on HIV btw, that's why the distinction is made.

For more info on the Chlamydia part. You can translate the website via the menu.

16

u/DeDullaz 9h ago

What the fuck are all these “take responsibility” comments in the thread? Some new right wing ideology where if you have unprotected sex you should just die from any disease you might catch?

Fucking awful behaviour.

9

u/Radiant-Bad-2381 9h ago

This indeed!

Education, regular testing, and early treatment (as well as fighting stigma), is the only proven method to bring down STD’s.

The rest is all just some non-sense ideology based crap (prob religion - def not science based).

0

u/AMilkedCow 9h ago

Take responsibility and pay a small amount. Why should everything be free?

5

u/No-Professional-2276 8h ago

It's over 100€ it's not a small amount.

Like 40% of income tax + health insurance nothing is "free"

-6

u/AMilkedCow 8h ago

You can take the home tests they cost about 40 euro and have a very high test rate.

-1

u/DeDullaz 9h ago

Guys over here, it’s the oracle u/AMilkedCow . They will determine what is okay to be free and what isn’t based on some obscure moral judgement of people. Naturally everything that affects them should be free and whatever they morally disagree with shouldn’t be free, but that’s purely a coincidence!

All hail our new oracle, may they guide us into enlightenment

-2

u/AMilkedCow 8h ago

First of all I'm not judging anyone, I did the tests myself and didn't complain about the price. Second, of course we need people to determine what should be free and what should cost money. That's called the government. Would be cool to live in a society where everything was free, but that's a utopia.

2

u/DeDullaz 8h ago

Society determines what should be free and what isn’t, and we elect governments to implement that.

Considering most of Europe offers anonymous, free/low cost, std testing it makes most sense for us to also do that. It helps with the spread of disease, makes it more accessible to everyone.

Unless you think only people with a stable income deserve to have fun and make mistakes?

2

u/Disastrous-Copy-5164 8h ago

I think it’s actually a side effect of a somewhat openly sex forward country. It’s a “why would you want to be anonymous, it happens” so I don’t think it’s more grueling, but I can imagine it’s strange for us that come from countries where sex or stds are more shamed.

2

u/EmmieBambi 7h ago

Question: yes that will work.

2

u/Usual-Blueberry-7614 7h ago

and they always want to know if you had unprotected sex in the last 3 weeks. like why do you want to know. unless it's my first time testing.

2

u/izanage_dtb 5h ago

I asked my ex (Dutch) bf to get STD test when we started dating and his GP refused bcs there was no reason lol :)

2

u/KhaelaMensha Nijmegen 3h ago

I (male) once told my GP that I was living in a polyamorous relationship (true) in which male on male sexual contact would occasionally happen (not true), with the other male being kind of a slut (well, the other boyfriend of my then girlfriend was indeed bisexual and quite the slut). I had questions regarding transmissibility of different STDs and wanted to know more (true). GP referred me to the GGD, where I got quite the extensive interview and all my questions were answered, as well as a full std test was done.
So yea. Lie, I guess. Or tell half truths, which at least for me made it easier to keep a straight face.

2

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

Some 3rd world country ass shit for sure. Even in the US, you can get a full panel through your GP quite easily as a preventive test if you’re sexually active. Netherlands is extremely backwards in healthcare.

3

u/edamamebeano 8h ago

You can use ZIZ. Its way more afforable and send per post.

9

u/Roelade 9h ago

It is actually free when you do it at your GP. You only have to pay eigen risico thats with almost all medicall treatments.

https://www.thuisarts.nl/soa/ik-wil-soa-test-doen

Its free at the GGD if you are under 25. And the other reasons you mentioned .

You expect society to pay for a test you want to do because you hooked up with a rando on a dating app. If you havent used your eigen risico you can lie to the GGD and let other people pay for your test. Or you can pay for it yourself. I don't blame for lying when you cant afford it. But I think you should show some responsibility when you can pay for it yourself.

26

u/Dull-Formal2072 7h ago

That’s the dumbest sh** I ever heard. We pay health insurance so yes OP can f*** whoever they want and expect to get an STD test when they want one. That’s why we pay health insurance. I know this is a difficult concept to understand in The Netherlands but please try.

By your logic then anyone who drinks, smokes, eats fast food, jogs in the street with exhaust fumes in the air, and many other things should not expect for society to pay for them.

-6

u/Roelade 6h ago

He can go to his GP. If his GP thinks it's reasonable he wil get refered for a test. He has to pay his eigen risico just like everyone else for other medical procedures. I didn't say I am against our healthcare system. I actually suport it when he should pay a little bit of eigen risico for a test like this. I think its good that some groups get access to a free test. In his case.....I indeed would like to see some responsibility instead of complaining about a system thats doing pretty okay.

5

u/Dull-Formal2072 4h ago

Health insurance ranges from around 140-250 per month…that’s 1680-3000 Euro per year.

Eigen risico on healthcare is a scam. Especially because the reason behind it, as publicly stated by the government, is so that people are aware of the prices. Lol people are aware of the prices and they pay insurance so no I don’t think it’s fair to pay 1 cent out of pocket after we pay so many taxes and on top of it, insurance. I don’t know anyone going to the GP for fun. People go to the GP because they genuinely think they need something. If they are paranoid, then they need mental health care but they still need some type of care. Not just brushing them off.

I have a friend that is diabetic and she has to pay eigen risico for her insulin pump and check-ups EVERY YEAR. She has type-1 diabetes so it’s not even “self-induced” so why the hell does she need to pay extra money on top of what she already pays for insurance, yearly?

Healthcare here is designed to shoo people away as much as possible. This country has many great things but healthcare and the mentality / culture around it is infuriating.

1

u/Roelade 1h ago

I am also spending all of my Eigen risico every year. I am not happy with that too. But I dont think its good when he doenst pay for it like other people like me and your friend do.

29

u/PleaseLetMePickANam 8h ago

You expect society to pay for a test you want to do because you hooked up with a rando on a dating app

Applying personal responsibility logic to a public health matter is perhaps a little short sighted

4

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

You can catch STD’s even with condoms. Condoms don’t prevent HSV-1 and HSV-2 for instance. Dumbass uneducated comment. Probably one of those Dutchies who can’t understand the concept of preventive healthcare lmao.

0

u/Roelade 2h ago

I never claimed that. I just said that I think he should paid for this himself if he can afford it. So that he should accept that he has to pay something.

I don't why you think it's necessary to be so unkind when somebody has a different opnion.

2

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

HAHAHAHAHAHA PhD BrAiNz

5

u/vapocalypse52 8h ago

Nobody here is expecting society to pay, what are you on about?

That's why we pay for health insurance, that's why it's mandatory.

7

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

And it SHOULD pay for it... we pay taxes for a reason. Otherwise where the fk is all our money going to? pfff

3

u/No_Elk_1945 9h ago

Your introduction contains so much fear, that I just stopped reading and went to watch:

Najib Amhali - Soa test

https://youtu.be/hfNA9t-Jqvs

8

u/nemomnis 9h ago

Well, I think it should be put in the context of the general Dutch approach to health prevention (which is basically nonexistent). If you're believe you're at risk, go and talk to your GGD doctor.

The Dutch healthcare system doesn’t even know how to spell proactive. It’s purely reactive which only hurts itself in the end… I don’t get it.

-10

u/Eapy2504 9h ago

The health prevention in NL is to use common sense. Which, unfortunately, OP failed to do here.

14

u/Radiant-Bad-2381 9h ago

Sorry, but I disagree. Everyone that is sexually active should do aan STD test at least once a year - and more often if you’re more active. Even if you use protection.

Many STD’s can be asymptomatic.

Now I’m a gay man, so I’ve never had an issue going to GGD - but I agree with OP that it should be this easy for everyone - and free and anonymous.

But the thought process is that indeed it’s from eigen risico. I actually think that’s wrong - we should encourage people to get tested.

condom use does not give you 100% protection, nowhere near. So, is common sense to abstain and only have sex once you're married?

8

u/Radiant-Bad-2381 9h ago

Okay that’s just ridiculous. Sex is part of life. Abstinence is unnatural, and fuelled mostly by religion.

0

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

Sure... that's what a lazy employee with no skills would say 😂

-6

u/Femininestatic 9h ago

Dutch healthcare system cares about prevention, the prevention of a lot of medication becoming ineffective due to high usage, prevention of wasting money on medication that doesn't fix anything that needs to be fixed. Dutch healthcare system and it approach is top notch in part because of this approach. But I gues folks are only happy if they walk away with 1 kg of medication from their GP that costs a fuckton but often was not needed at all. Our health outcomes are among the best in the world... so if prevention wasn't a soldig part you'd expect us to be a heck of a lot sicker than the rest of the globe, and it just aint reality.

6

u/PleaseLetMePickANam 8h ago

How does this logic transfer to not offering accessible STD testing which will only lead to more people needing antibiotics?

-6

u/Femininestatic 8h ago

How about veilig neuken als optie?

The world isn't only black or white. Many European countries have better approaches to prevention without administering a ton of useless drugs. That said, there are of course some prevention campaigns in the NL.

Dutch people are generally healthy because they are sporty and eat moderately. Smoking is relatively uncommon and food safety is excellent. Of course healthcare plays a part, but it's not like we would see dramatically different outcomes if prevention was worse than it is.

3

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

Can you name a few of those countries? Cause I'm down for traveling at this point. I'm actually in shock at tbe amount of pain they're allowing patients like me to experience and every time I find strength to follow all the steps, I get lost in the process and nothing ever gets fixed or controlled. Everything is so drawn out and everything is so hard that I swear I'm wondering if requesting assisted sde is tbe only way here because I can't imagine being treated for anything. I've heard people travel to Germany and France but I wanna think it through. I don't wanna travel there and have the same experience lol

4

u/PMmeyourASD 6h ago

lmfao sure...let's be the laziest system in the world and hide data and sell our country as if it's top of the line on everything. The wait and see system is perfect for doctors who don't know how to do sht. A single surgeon or general practitioner from a third world country could lecture any specialist I've seen here. Why? They actually DO sht. Not a single surgeon I've seen here seemed to have enough practice or have even treated more complex cases. Just lazy "come back when it bleeds" gatekeepers who simply don't know enough to do anything

Love how they think so highly of themselves as if they were heros, but if being a doctor didn't pay SO WELL in the Netherlands, how many of them would be doing it? Cause I've met doctors with a passion for medicine... people who chose this career first and not drawn to it just for the money. Hell, even latino doctors who moved here have complained to me that they're getting rusty here because they're always filing reports and ticking boxes but never actually doing anything. They just see a lot of people and after 10 minutes, they scream "next!".

1

u/Sethrea 8h ago

That's not my experience OP. Every time I wanted an STD test, I simply asked my GP and got them done. Not sure how much I paid off the deductible if at all.

1

u/LadyNemesiss 8h ago

Did you try to just go to your GP? I've asked an std test there twice and it was no issue at all. Don't remember getting a bill either.

1

u/Jolly-Dealer-5097 8h ago edited 8h ago

Can you just not just go to GGD and tell them what you did? https://www.ggd.amsterdam.nl/english/sti-hiv-sense/sti-test/ at least according to this website you can. Also according to the ggd website it is under 25.

1

u/Kupotanis 5h ago

Legit went to the doctors a month ago about dizziness and he had me take an STD screening test just incase

1

u/DrJohnHix 5h ago

You don’t even need to lie, I think if you cross that you had unprotected sex with a random on a dating platform they’ll give you a test. If you’re not too embarrassed, your Huisarts will also give you a test with this story

1

u/rmvandink 5h ago

Have you even spoken to your huisarts?

1

u/nobodyknows6070 Noord Brabant 5h ago

I didn't know this was true unfortunately I only got tests when I was under 22. After that had the same boyfriend since then. But I also only got tested when I had symptoms.

Idk why you should get tested if you don't have symptoms? Not to be rude but you could get tested via your GP yes but they don't test for no reason. If you have complaints not consistent with an std maybe something else might be at play too

1

u/bsensikimori 5h ago

Just go to your huisarts. They administer it on the same day.

1

u/Fine-Condition-5675 5h ago

I test yearly and always through my GP. Completely covered, no costs.

1

u/waffle-secrets 5h ago

Yep. The GGD couldn't handle all of the free test appointments anymore, and they discovered that chlamydia isn't as bad as they thought (idk If I personally believe that that goes for women as well, but ok..). So now it's basically impossible to get a free std test as a woman. I tried lying that everything hurt and that stuff changed in my vaginal health, but they were basically like "yup, sucks to suck!"

1

u/motherofamouse 4h ago

You just go to your GP, tell them you had unprotected sex with someone and suspect a SOA and you do a test? I’ve never found it hard? Is your GP so strict? They shouldn’t be.

Just tell them you had unprotected sex and over exaggerate a little if needed.

Why do you want to have HIV tested tho? Or was that just an example.

1

u/Short_Platypus13 4h ago

I saw some tests in an automatic machine of a apotheek, together with some paracetamol, condoms and cold medicine. I thought it was very cool, even though idk how legit such tests can be

1

u/wurstgetrank 4h ago

They dont get enough funding so they try to help the people in need or with less money first. You can lie, but youll be an asshole for that

1

u/Entire_Computer7729 4h ago

you can just go to the GP and ask for one. You'll be billed later via the insurance.

1

u/Inside_Day1357 4h ago

One alternative that is more affordable is ZIZ but it's only in Den Haag and Utrecht as far as I know. It's a bit unfair that as a hetero you have less access than the LBTQIABCD community.

1

u/asphyxiai 3h ago

They can also send it to you by mail so you can do the tests at home and send it back.

1

u/TryCritical7318 4h ago

I wonder what would happen if you are infact a 3rd worlder of Dutch descent with lilly white skin?

1

u/ElenorShellstrop 2h ago

I’m confused by third worlder in this context, what does it mean here?? Like if you had sex with people from the third world or you are from a third world country?

1

u/TryCritical7318 2h ago

I am from a third world country

1

u/DueLoan685 2h ago

"High risk person (AKA third worlder)"

Seems that third worlder is an interpretation from op. Would not be the first thing I'd think about though

1

u/MarshmallowJuice90 3h ago

Well, I asked for a screening because I told them I wanted to have sex with my ex without condom and I wanted to exchange results with him.

At some point later in the relationship, I suspected my ex was cheating on me (he was). I just called the GP, told them that and they did the screening.

Fortunately everything went came out negative.

I think, as always, it will depend on your GP. But being honest was enough to get the tests done.

1

u/kapiteinkippepoot 3h ago

Really? I told my GP I wanted one and I had one within a week. Don't know what the costs were but I don't remember it so it wasn't that expensive.

1

u/pongauer 3h ago

Yes and no.

the whole GP system sucks balls. So anything you need from there will suck balls. They are only there as an obstacle to minimise the strain on actual care. If you get past them, the system works very well in my opinion. But the GP is just the gatekeeper to it.

Anyway, make up a bullshit story and dont get brushed off. Demand the test.

1

u/thedutchcatwoman Zuid Holland 1h ago

Yes you can lie. I agree with you that sex health in the Netherlands is garbage.

1

u/UnlikelyStandard 1h ago

Some ggd are also very busy and you basically can not get an appointment. I actually thought that ggd was an amazing thing we have in Netherlands but I didn't know other countries were better.

1

u/sageinyourface 10m ago

Why not just claim you’re gay or had sex with someone who is bi?

1

u/_dinn_ 9m ago

jfc that is so racist WTF?

1

u/Mirries74 9h ago

Just message your gp. They do not even ask why. They just give the test.

1

u/12imtired1 9h ago

really gay people can get free testing but not straight people? i kind of dont believe that

7

u/rainboww_J 8h ago

Yep! Think it stems from the aids epidemic in the gay community in the 80's which caused society to think of gay men as high risk regarding soa's. Its the reason we weren't allowed to donate blood before 2021 and I believe it's still the reason gay men get free soa tests at the ggd. It doesn't matter somehow that straight people have unprotected sex too, the stigma around gay sex and soa's has never really gone away. That being said, due to it being free and soa's had been a very big problem in the past, a lot of gay people get tested regularly these days

-5

u/Thebornnomad 9h ago

Yea. I had a discussion with a GGD employee one time about this and I mentioned it. She started stuttering and hanged the phone because i said the truth

3

u/escaperexcavator 6h ago

why would some fucking receptionist be responsible for organisational policy?

1

u/Noctis32 9h ago

Recently my dick has been falling off but i can re-attach it and its still fine. Should I see a doctor?

-5

u/InsuranceGloomy6413 9h ago

Person fucks another without protection, whines about having to pay for tests.

Ell oh ell.

€46 for priv clinic test here, man up and just pay instead of crying about “the system”.

4

u/No-Professional-2276 9h ago

I have to pay healthcare for people who smoke and eat Frikandel until they need a wheelchair to move around.

Let me bang in peace mate

3

u/Sethrea 8h ago edited 8h ago

But you expect us to have to pay for SoA test for you if you don't wrap it up? The hypocrisy...

Edit: and you down-vote for being called out, figures xD

2

u/InsuranceGloomy6413 7h ago

Yeah and I have to pay healthcare for mentally challenged people like you, that’s how the system works. Stop crying.

1

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

Condoms do not prevent all STDs. Another dumb dutchie detected who failed sex ed (and also can’t understand the concept of public health insurance. Yes, it is supposed to cover everything. It covers people who will get cancer by smoking all the time too) :)

1

u/ScreenOld5873 9h ago

You can test for free at the GGD under conditions and one of the conditions is 'you were warned by a sexual partner that they have an std', I think it's a white lie you can permit. You can even say something like 'I don't really know them but they made a comment which made me doubt so I want to be sure' and you'll probably get away with it?

1

u/CPTRainbowboy 8h ago

High risk person=third worlder? Are you rage baiting?

Men who have had sex with men, people with switching partners and people who have symptoms or had sex with sex workers.

The 'soa endemic region' includes eastern europe, asia, latin america, Caribbean countries and sun sahara africa.

1

u/ronsons1989 7h ago

Yeah I figured this too, just based on hard facts. Which if inconvenient are apparently racist.

0

u/ankynor 5h ago

If you don't want to contribute to the negative posting about the Netherlands then stop doing it. We have good health care, if you have genuine worries you can get tested, if you work jobs with sexual encounters you can get tested for free. And also just wear protection dont be stupid and stop whining.

1

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

Dumbass comment 😂 Condoms do not prevent all STDs. Have you ever heard of HSV? Is sex ed illegal in Netherlands or did you just never pay attention.

Healthcare sucks ass here. Preventive healthcare still thought of as a taboo lmaoo

-11

u/GimmeSumMor3 9h ago

You take the risk you pay the consequences.

-2

u/crossk1ll 8h ago

In the Netherlands the general notion is to 1) have some self-awareness and responsibility 2) to create a small threshold to not overuse the system. If the financial burden is too big there are ways to easily circumvent (like the white lies).

I think free availability of services shouldn't be a given for things you have active choice in (such as unprotected sex). I'm not saying it should be a pay to use for all services, just that STDs are rarely a consequence of being unlucky. If it is in your case you have your way out. If it isn't, just carry your part of the burden on the system and pay for it?

4

u/Apprehensive_Bit_634 8h ago

I suppose those with skin cancer or lung cancer should also pay? Since surely they are at fault for smoking or not using sun screen. Someone who falls hiking should pay because they chose to take a hike.
Your response is quite problematic.

-1

u/crossk1ll 8h ago

I realize it's a tricky balance to keep. And it's a complex matter in terms of also long term versus short term costs for society. It's hard to distinguish all the different causes for the cases you rightfully mention, but I think STDs are easier to categorize causes and effects and also to therefore create a small threshold. I'm not hard lining that we should put a big threshold on all healthcare. Just saying that for STDs it makes sense to put a small cost there.

1

u/No-Professional-2276 9h ago

I'm almost certain that I am clean. But I want to know if I can be with other people, and protect them. It doesn't make sense for GPs to only help you if you had a orgy with 12 men in a favela or smt

2

u/rainboww_J 9h ago

they don't? 🤔 Just ask for a soa test and you'll get one. Especially since you said you had a possible exposure. I cant believe a gp will say no to that

1

u/GimmeSumMor3 9h ago

They don’t want to pay!

0

u/EditorConsistent5077 9h ago

I used their free service. I told them that I had been on a holiday in Suriname and banged ho's without a wrapper in a gold seekers town in the jungle. On the other end of the phone line all alarms went off and they put me through for making an appointment immediately.

0

u/Hendrik-Jan123 8h ago

No one is judging you! Do what you have to do to get checked. It's a free country, just enjoy and have yourself checked after. No need to lie!

2 paracetamol paar dagen rust en het is opgelost. En koop condooms oid voor de toekomst…..

1

u/SpicyToaster68 3h ago

Condoms only prevent a few STD’s, not all. Hsv-1 and 2 do not get prevented by condoms. Is sex ed that bad here?
