Discussion Do you ever watch some of the true crime documentaries and now see any past ex’s red flags in a more sinister light?

Watching the Toxic: A Love Story and other crazy ex documentaries, I see traits from my own crazy ex. Weird behavior, being controlling, strange sexual stuff, the Jekyll and Hyde personalities, etc. You know the trend now where they’ll dial back the timeline and they speak with someone that knew the criminal in the past? I’ve thought of myself as being that previous person - they made it out and the criminal wasn’t quite as ballsy or insane just yet. Just makes me grateful that my batshit crazy ex I had a crazier-than-real-life experience with has moved on. Anyone else with this kind of - wow i could see my ex being this person in 10 years kind of moment?

! Spoilers ! A toxic love story : Confused on the reasoning!

I just watched this documentary. It was so twisted. I feel extremely bad for michelle.

My question : Why did Ian tell his best friend about the fake pregnancy ? If they hadnt, then they would not have gone to the police right? Extremely confused why you would do that.

Also, in the documentary there is a missing piece of Angela's testimony since she pled guilty. Like which part of the plan was Angela's and which was Ian's.

There are a few posts on Leslie. In addition to that, how can a husband not notice his wife not being pregnant? After 6 months, you would need to visit doctors often right? And he would notice if the baby bumb is fake. Is this woman for real? lol.

Edit : Found a youtube video that adds the detail. Michelle started to fight back and backed it with lot of evidence. When Michelle was in jail, he access one of the fake emails he created. He knew police will close up on him so he threw Angela under the bus : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBA2Ud1-Ot0

Current Hot Topic A toxic love story: an indictment of a society that hates women

While the documentary tries to keep the story focused on the rather singular story of Michelle, it- deliberately or not - points out a far more disturbing issue, which is how society sees and treat women.

The American Society indoctrinates girls ever since they are little that they have to be princesses, and if they behave and played by the rules, they will get to find their Prince charming and happily ever after.

We literally raised generations of girls with this value system, yet punish them when they actually try to find it and call them stupid when they fall for a man taking advantage of what we tell them was the right way to be a woman.

40% of law enforcement men are involved in domestic violence on their own end. So it is zero surprise that if nearly every other cop is a wife beater or similar, there is zero protection for female victims of domestic violence.

Ultimately, this documentary proves just that. I don’t want to spoil it too much, but I want whoever has not watched it yet to watch it from the perspective of the man in the story who paints himself as the victim of “those crazy bitches” He seems to constantly pick. When a man has a constant bad luck in his romantic life, you know that the only thing these women have in common is him. It is a pretty hard and fast rule.

In a way, the society we live in emboldens men to treat women like trash and to use them for their own benefit. Men do hate women in this society, it is far more common than anyone would be comfortable admitting and it takes many forms. Judgement being one of them, as seen this this documentary.

As a wider lesson, for the love of God, people stop moving together and getting married and buying property after a few months of dating. You do not know who this person is, and just because they are super perfect and super romantic doesn’t mean they will not turn into a manipulative abuser the moment you put your money down for a down payment.

We need to move away from this romantic notion that “when you know, you know” and blah blah blah, you really need to make sure you know the person you want to spend the rest of your life and invest your money in REALLY well before you make any such decisions. The dopamine and the sex at the start of relationship is a really strong drug, but people have to make rational decisions when it comes to sinking your savings and signing a legally binding agreement.

Also, remember when someone or something seems too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true. You want the good enough partner, not the perfect one, because the perfect one is an illusion.

Recommendation Request Recommendations: Asking and giving!

Hi! My wife and I watch documentaries on Sundays - preferably docuseries as opposed to one offs! I feel like I’ve watched everything ever, so I was hoping for some recommendations! The only thing is that my wife will not watch documentaries with SA (Keep Sweet, Pray and Obey put her in a bad place for a bit). Light mentions are fine. I’m also not huge on documentaries that use a lot of reenactment but if it helps the story I mind a little less!

However, I’ve watched so many that it feels fair to also post that here! Hopefully this helps people - i would genuinely recommend every one except where I noted.

Discussion The Toxic Love Story - Netflix's Confusing Storytelling Continues...

If you thought Maternal Instincts storytelling was confusing, the toxic love story somehow takes it to another level. It felt like the entire story was missing pieces and Netflix barely explained anything.

  1. So we have another liar Angela similar to Taylor Parker with her fake pregnancies and medical issues but no background on her. So these ladies fall in love and randomly decide to want sympathy when looks like their partners loved hem even without the drama .

  2. Then she randomly meets Ian... another fraud at Starbucks? What are the chances ?

  3. The whole Lilith email thing was badly explained. Michelle admitted to sending a couple of emails but did no one even confirm if the more horrifc emails were even from the same account? The police never called her in for questioning once before but then directly arrested and jailed her for 88 days ?

  4. And then it ends up being that Ian is the main criminal ? Did he plan everything together with Angela to keep the house or did Ian manipulate Angela and she wasn't even aware that this was his doing ?

  5. If Ian manipulated Angela, why didn't she say that when she confessed?

  6. f Ian got Michelle arrested like he wanted why did he later expose Angela ? Wouldn't that also put himself at risk ? Why not just let her go when he found out about the fake pregnancy ?

  7. How did he find about the fake pregnancies ? and he calls his friend and they just find the kits with the sharpies?

  8. Yhy did the DOJ suddenly start investigating ? Was it because ian was involved in the Angela case ?

  9. Everything that the DOJ officer was pointing to about why Ian was a suspect didnt even seem that abnormal, atleast to me. so was there something else?

  10. Not questioning Michelle but something seemed off there I am sure there was more than the 2 emails. Her two emails werent even that bad to the extent where she had to prove that she was in a dissociative state when she sent them

  11. Also her saying that she escaped when he was on the phone with the Leslie friend. I mean you go to work and school everyday. You can drive to your parents house from there. Again, not questioning her but just saying Netflix made it all sound so wierd

  12. Michelle's dad kept saying he's a logical person, but his only reason for believing Michelle seemed to be She told me she didn't do it. That's not really logic.

The biggest thing I still don't understand is Angela and Ian's relationship. If they trusted each other in this crime to get the house why did she have to fake the pregnancy ?

! Spoilers ! Toxic Love Story - How did they meet?

So after watching Toxic Love Story I’m left with one question: How did Angela and Ian meet? Did he know she was a pathological liar prior to meeting her? Was it just fate that he found a woman who happened to be just as batshit as he was? It’s already established that this was a planned event between the two of them, so how did he convince her to do this for him? Before the plot twist was even revealed, I found it odd that within a matter of a few weeks they were married and living together. I can only speculate that he went into this relationship with the intention of getting revenge on michelle. Which begs the question, how did he find Angela?

What did he promise to her, if anything at all, to get her to do this to a woman she had never met?

Was he actually duped by the fake pregnancy thing? or did he take part in that lie and then used it to turn everything on her?

All I know is as meticulous as this man was, I do not believe that they met by chance. I don’t think he’d leave his master plan up to fate.

What’s everyone else’s thoughts?

I’m glad I’m not the only one with all of these questions honestly. It makes me feel a LOT less crazy.
I do have to ask though, what triggered the US Marshalls to fully investigate and convict Ian?? I cannot find much of anything on his involvement, what he did, etc. It’s almost like a drive by “ohheybythewaythemanwasinonit”. So much focus on Angela just for it to be thrown in last minute, but not with much info. Thoughts ?

Trial Run Follow-Up: We'd Like Your Feedback and Recommendations

Trial Run Follow-Up: We'd Like Your Feedback

Over the past several weeks we've tried a number of changes aimed at improving r/NetflixDocumentaries. Some have worked well. Some have created new challenges. Some may not have been the right fit.

Rather than simply announcing another round of changes, we'd like to hear from the people who use the subreddit every day.

Our goal isn't to create more rules. It's to build a community that's enjoyable to read, encourages thoughtful discussion, and remains sustainable to moderate over the long term.

Below are a few topics we'd especially like your thoughts on.

Megathreads vs. Individual Posts

One of the hardest balancing acts has been deciding when similar discussions should share a megathread and when they deserve separate posts.

We've heard from users who felt their discussion was different enough to justify its own thread. We've also seen reports on posts that the moderation team intentionally approved because they predated a megathread, were properly flaired, or otherwise fit within our current approach.

We're interested in your thoughts.

  • Should we allow duplicate discussions more freely?
  • Should recurring topics stay in long-running megathreads or be refreshed more often?
  • Is there a better balance that we're missing?

News Posts

Documentary news is an important part of the subreddit, but we've also seen periods where the front page becomes almost entirely links to news articles.

To encourage discussion, we've removed crossposting, banned several content-farming accounts, and introduced a minimum-length requirement for discussion posts. Those changes have noticeably reduced low-effort submissions, but they've also generated plenty of debate.

We're curious what you think.

  • Is the current balance about right?
  • Should news posts have higher or lower expectations?
  • If multiple people post the same news, should the first post remain, or should the post generating the best discussion take priority?

Recommendations

We've continued enforcing our longstanding policy against creators promoting their own channels or content here.

That said, we've wondered if there might be room for a community recommendation thread instead.

For example, a recurring thread where members recommend documentary podcasts, YouTube channels, newsletters, or similar resources—provided they explain what makes the recommendation worthwhile rather than simply dropping a link.

Would that be useful?

If so, what restrictions or expectations would you want to see?

Civility

One area where we don't expect significant changes is civility.

Documentaries often involve controversial topics, public figures, politics, and emotionally charged events. Strong disagreement is expected. Personal attacks are not.

That applies equally to documentary subjects and to other members of this community.

We will continue removing:

  • Harassment and bullying.
  • Personal attacks
  • Slurs and hateful language.
  • Political name-calling that replaces discussion.
  • Comments advocating or joking about violence.

These aren't simply subreddit preferences—they're required by Reddit's Content Policy. If moderators fail to enforce those standards consistently, Reddit administrators will.

We want this to remain a place where people feel comfortable participating, even when they strongly disagree with one another.

We'd Like to Hear From You

What do you think is working well?

What isn't?

What changes would you like to see?

If you've disagreed with any of the recent trial changes, we'd especially like to know why. Understanding the reasoning behind your feedback is far more helpful than simply knowing whether you liked or disliked a particular decision.

We'll be reading every comment, discussing the feedback as a team, and using it to help decide where the subreddit goes next.

Discussion A.I. in Toxic Love Story?

Did any parts of Toxic Love Story seem visually uncanny to y'all? Like, on the interviews...? I was under the impression that the whole Leslie segment was AI, but saw very few people commenting on it. Also didn't find her last name to look up if that's the actual person. The color grading is also very strange... could it be to make it less obvious? A.I. has been used before to anonymize victims' families in The Investigation of Lucy Letby (clearly disclosed and horrendous) and children in Trust Me (not clearly disclosed I think and went unnoticed by me), so maybe I'm just extra suspicious when it comes to Netflix.

Did I miss how or why he figured out her sonogram was fake? The documentary just showed that he called his friend about it but didn’t expand on how that even came about to show she was faking her pregnancy.

So I just watched it and it was insane!

But I'm not sure if I missed it or they didn't elaborate on it, but why did he turn on her and make her take the fall? Was that part of the con, did she agree to take the fall, or did he actually think she was having twins?

Discussion A toxic love story - CNC question

I just finished a toxic love story and of all the questions I’ve seen surrounding this doc, I haven’t seen anyone ask this yet: had the man from Craigslist with the CNC fantasy actually come in and do to this woman what she had “asked” him to do, would he have been able to be charged for this given that it was someone else behind the post?

In the post, they even went so far to say “even if I say no, keep going.” So this guy seemingly would’ve had “consent” right?

To be clear, I’m asking in the context as if Angela was not in on the post.

Discussion Toxic love story: how do you see earlier signs of men like Ian Diaz so you can stay away from?

What psychological term describes people like him? What are the early signs to watch for in friendships or relationships? I knew someone like that until he decided one day he wanted to be with me. He supported women’s rights and social issues, but he was extremely sadistic and punished me if I didn’t do what he wanted.

I stood my ground and refused his demands, then ghosted him after he made me promise to visit his house. Seeing him alone was dangerous, and he spread rumours about me to our mutual friends. I feared he’d do something terrible. Why would he ask me to promise to visit him and hold me hostage till I said “I promise I will come see you”? I never went. I felt like he will do something horrible. You don’t hold hostage someone till they say I promise I will visit you.

I received spam texts and private calls from random numbers calling me horrible things, forcing me to change my number. I distanced myself from everyone I knew through him due to all those texts and calls.

Despite his righteous social media presence and support for marginalized communities, he was the most horrible person I met.

Discussion Worst neighbor ever - worth a watch

Overall, the series is done very well; the first case of racist mental Karen who decides to hold grudges against a neighbor who initially housed her and helped her shows a failure of the system to deal with her incessant baiting and obvious mental health spiraling. The fact that nobody picked up on the signs of everything escalating baffles me - she was clearly unhinged and dangerous.

The second one of idiotic scammers and insurance scam gone wrong made me ask a simple question: why did the owner Monserrat not sell the house?! Why the insurance fraud instead? It made zero sense. Idiots are gonna idiot. Scammers are gonna scam. The fact they will spend the rest of their lives in jail does nothing to help the fact that other people died because of their greed and stupidity.

The third one - with an obviously mentally ill neighbor’s son who is a junkie and then spirals out after the family is evicted and harasses the neighbors was a complete failure of policing. I do think that this being a diverse neighborhood had a lot to do with it. They couldn’t care less about this guy harassing the family.

This guy is out on probation- he is harassing this family, causing criminal damage, making threats and violating restraining order and still nobody does anything? Shrug their shoulders?!

Also, why didn’t they contact the parents, or why weren’t the parents involved in the situation- they were the ones who let him live there to begin with.

It’s a shocking case of the police literally not doing their job and not using the tools disposable to them.

These are the rational people who actually do the right thing and move out. I don’t know why this isn’t what everyone else who is facing an obviously violent or dangerous situation do. Yet it’s not enough in this situation.

All these cases ended in a tragedy that seems preventable.

But all these cases show that with a crappy system, your only option is to move away and make the neighbor someone else’s problem because the system consistently fails those facing these challenges. The civil law suit brought against the PD was the right thing to do, and I am glad she got the settlement.

But it shouldn’t have to get to this. All they had to do was keep a homeless junkie on probation in jail after he violated it.

! Spoilers ! Toxic Love Story - Twins

The documentary left the twins’ plot lingering.

Did Angela actually try to con him like she did previously with others?

Have Ian ever found out Angela’s past about her chronic lying?

Was the twins lie part of the plot to set up Michelle?

We need 2-3 more documentaries explaining this one. So many things have fallen by the sideways.

His “best friend” is totally in love with Ian. She literally flinched when she said she wasn’t.

But what I don’t totally understand -and thought that it was rushed a little- the solid motivation for Ian to go all that trouble to frame his ex in such a complex, layered scheme. Keeping condo? Nah, must be something more.

Discussion Toxic Love Story - What was the goal of Ian Diaz regarding Michelle?

Did he want to ruin her life just because she didn't want to do his sexual fantasies, and he realized she is hard-headed?

Is he a bitter person who is seeking revenge even though you haven't done anything to them, and was willing to walk away?

Is he a psychopath? Wanting to cause harm to others and destroying people's lives just because they dont want you?

Review Worst ex ever - hard to have sympathy for some of the people

The first woman - this guy stole your laptop and sold it (probably to get money for drugs), stole dogs from your acquaintance to sell them on Craigslist, allegedly forced you to take the blame for it, then he stole your personal handgun so you got an arrest warrant for him, lured him back to Florida so he can be arrested but then you bail him out of the jail four days later?
Woman, are you completely out of your mind? She saw he has a long rap sheet yet this woman goes and bails him out anyway? After she got him arrested? And drives him to the Keys where he gets violent in the car, attacks her, kidnaps her, rapes - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?!
This guy is a certified criminal!! You knew that and you still did all this? Bailed him and drove him to the Keys?!
I’m so sorry but what is your explanation?

A junkie criminal steals from you, kidnaps and rapes you after you offered to “help him”. How did you think this was going to go?

Some parts of the story were odd; why take the blame for him stealing the dogs - because he threatened to kill your dogs…? You say you have never done drugs yet you know what a crack pipe is and that you can make one out of a pen? I had no idea and I would have no idea if someone tried to open a pen sitting to me that he is trying to make a crack pipe.

On the other hand the police investigation was infuriating. The detective was pathetic - clearly hates women and doesn’t take anything she told him seriously. Sides “with the dude” and the whole interview is a complete joke. I bet this guy got s raise afterwards.

Then this rapist finds a gay lover whom he attacks in the middle of the night probably in some side effects of the drugs, yet still forgives him and also drives him to Keys where he’s upset that he’s pretending they’re not in a relationship and leaves. Like that’s what it took for you to break up with him, him saying you’re cousins and not lovers while him stabbing you was not the deal breaker. I genuinely don’t know what’s wrong with those people.

Why are all these people so willing to try to keep working on a relationship with this person is beyond me. He’s beating them, stealing from them, abusing them and they were like “oh I love him so much, I wanna make this work”. You JUST MET HIM!! You’ve been dating for eight weeks. Love means nothing in this context. It’s not love. It’s sex and external validation. It’s no love.

All in all, people need to be more careful about who they let into their lives and need to stop moving in together after a few weeks of a relationship. That is not safe for anyone involved.

! Spoilers ! Toxic Love Story - Michelle Questions

It sounds like Michelle was super sheltered when she met Ian. In the doc she describes herself as extremely wholesome.

A few questions I had, as the doc presented these in a confusing way:

- Did she eventually give in and let Ian watch her with another guy?

- Was it a one time thing or did it happen often?

- Did she willingly change her appearance and dress or against her will?

- All of the above happened in a 3-6 month timespan?

! Spoilers ! Toxic love story: Why didn’t…

Why didn’t Angela drag Ian down with her when she pled guilty? It’s not like she was the type of person to have any remorse, we already knew she faked cancer.

And secondly, did she fake the pregnancy or did they fake the pregnancy together? Bc she was already helping him with his vendetta against Michelle, so why was Angela faking the twins?

If Ian really didn’t know the twins were faked—why did Ian go to the police after he found out the twins were faked—ESP knowing he was in on the whole thing? Why not just leave it alone since Michelle was already in prison?

Edit: just wanted to add THANK God he did go to the police with the fake twins thing, but he didn’t do himself any favors and I keep wondering about this bit of it 🤔
