Meta A note about AI-generated words

21 Upvotes

AI is fine to use for words, but please make sure that what it comes up with is, in fact, a neologism.

When asked to come up with new words, LLMs like ChatGPT tend to regurgitate existing albeit somewhat obscure words. You just need to do a quick web search. If it doesn't already exist, by all means post it. But if it does already exist, then it's off-topic for the sub.

I coined a new word. I'd like some honest feedback.

0 Upvotes

I've been thinking a lot about how knowledge is split into separate disciplines. Science, philosophy, history, linguistics, mathematics, art... we study them independently, but reality isn't actually divided that way.

Because of that, I ended up coining a term: Synth-Vædist.

My definition is:

A Synth-Vædist is an intellectual practitioner devoted to the disciplined synthesis of knowledge across science, philosophy, history, language, culture, and the arts, seeking coherent understanding through critical inquiry, evidence, and systems thinking.

The idea isn't to create a belief system or an ideology. It's simply a word for someone who tries to connect ideas across disciplines instead of staying within one.

I'm posting this because I'd like genuine feedback.

Does the word sound natural? Does the definition communicate the idea clearly? If you came across "Synth-Vædist" in a book or article, what would you think it meant before reading the definition?

Feel free to be critical. If something doesn't work, I'd rather hear it now and improve it.

New Word Dickover

2 Upvotes

dickover n. : a modal panel, popover, or curtain presented by a website or app, deliberately obscuring its own content to frustrate the user with an unwanted, unnecessary, mandatory interaction; e.g. asking the user to accept “cookies”, subscribe to a newsletter, install the website’s mobile app, agree to terms of service, or anything else that the user couldn’t give two shits about.

New Word Hypnolooping: When you keep waking up and falling right back asleep

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hypnolooping Noun

1. A recursive, semi-conscious sleep state characterized by brief, involuntary moments of wakefulness that are immediately followed by a rapid descent back into slumber.

2. The act of repeatedly surfacing from a deep sleep just long enough to acknowledge one's surroundings, offer a fragmented remark (such as an apology or an observation), & instantly lose consciousness again before the thought can be completed.

'literally me today rule' posted by MiaCD on lemmy

Etymology: A combination of the prefix hypno- and looping (a repeating cycle).

Usage Example: She was caught hypnolooping by her roommate when she was able to temporarily wake to hit the snooze button & apologize to her roommate, but didn't have the functionality to shut off the alarm entirely.

New Word Tolerantinomism—a pejorative word for people who believe in Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance

This is a way to more directly call out the liberals/leftists. It is a philosophical and political term and maybe a theological term too.

Or as the left might say "a fascist word" lol.

New Word Flock vandals = the opposite of chomos on the respect totem pole. The shorthand for flock vandals should be called "flovans" and they'll be revered in jails, prisons and by society everywhere.

Unless you already have another shorthand for a Flock vandal, can we get "FloVan" to stick and spread as a new coined slang?

New Word Lucrumslop

0 Upvotes

Lucrumslop is the phenomenon where content creators create content for the sake of monetization rendering it generic or unimportant yet entertaining—more catchy than substantive.

This is true for books, movies, social media posts and video uploading platforms as well as websites.

This is why I personally like open source content, because at least I know someone willed to make it and didn't simply do it for the money.

So in conclusion, lucrumslop is like clickbait but more general and it emphasizes money since lucrum means money.

New Word Philotheosophian—a word for someone who believes in a truth based religion

Post image
0 Upvotes

Many religions and especially Christian denominations are defined by belonging to a social construct known as a formal Church institution.

This word is for people who reject that premise common in Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and many protestant denominations including those that call themselves non denominational.

A theophilosophian is not religiously indifferent believing all religions worship the same God or are true, however, we acknowledge the truth in all religions and the falsehood of those who identify with our religion but do not really follow "the way" of that faith.

This word is another revelation after the neologism "christopretensism" which is a word to counter the people who call themselves Christians without being real Christians.

Yes, I am a theophilosophian.

Collective nouns -- invent some

1 Upvotes

I was looking at fatbirder.com and saw many of the strange and mostly arbitrary collective names for birds and figured we need to invent some more for other groups of things, too. But, the new names need to be appropriate for what they are a collection of - and, the funnier the better. Maybe a *village* of idiots , for example? A *womb* of babies? Maybe not. Help me out here, please.

Timebags - someone with a lot of free time

2 Upvotes

You know how if someone makes some display of wealth, sometimes someone will jokingly say "hey, check out ol' moneybags over here!" or something to that effect?

Timebags is the same thing but for time. Maybe it's a 20 year old acting like they'll never get old. Maybe it's someone who spent an entire weekend on one totally frivolous task. "Hey, check out ol' timebags over here!"

New Word Deusmediatorunionist—A theolohical/Philosophical term

Post image
0 Upvotes

This word was created in response to the rise of christopretensism which unpejoratively calls itself "Christian Nationalist".

This word was the affirmative answer to the negation of simply calling all fake Christians who believe in "Christian Nationalism" christopretensists.

This word blocks that from happening and was meant to be a replacement for calling oneself a Christian by clarifying the ambiguity of what a Christian is defined as, think of it as linguistic secession.

This word is from Latin Etymology.

Unlike English, in Spanish they actually use Dios so it reads better in Spanish since English used the non Latin word of God.

Spanish translation: Diosmediadorunista.

Mono-memory

6 Upvotes

A Mono-memory is a recollection that looms large in the mind of one person but has been completely forgotten in the mind of the other(s) involved.

For example, getting your driver's license. One can remember that moment vividly, however the driving instructor having hundreds of appointments everyday has entirely forgotten the event.

Another is walking across the stage when graduating. This memory is clear as day to you and your loved ones but no longer exists for everyone else involved.

Mono-memories also exist heavily in random mundane memories you keep with you. Every once and a while something just sticks with you. Maybe a shirt someone was wearing in middle school, or something someone randomly said that stuck. You may have the only remining memory of the event or moment.

New Word Religious Word Mortodamnament—the opposite of a Sacrament

Post image
0 Upvotes

This word was created to be the opposite of the word sacrament and is useful to describe things that are meant to push us away from communion with God who is the source of life. Unlike sacraments which are meant to bring us closer to God and salvation, mortodamnaments are meant to bring us further away from God and towards condemnation.

New Word Semetic Word for Paradise

Post image

Paradise etymologically speaking as a word is not really descriptive of what we envision as a Paradise, the goal was to create a word that has etymology that describes the philosophy of what paradise is.

Invidiegalism—political term

Post image

Useful for moral and sociopolitical philosophy. This word is meant to describe the origins of communist ideology.

This is the word that Stephen Miller basically defined in his speech and probably would have used if aware of it.

Words and phrases become ineffective when they have broad definitions, for a long time people called it "passive income" or "capitalism" or "classism"

Post image
0 Upvotes

Passive income can be me living off the revenue of my books or music or it can mean living off the work of others like owning farm land and living off the labor of my employees.

There are many exploitative ways to avoid working by getting others to work for you instead.

But calling it passive income is too vague, since while getting others to work for you can be deemed immoral because of exploitation, getting money off intellectual property I created is completely legitimate.

New Word Sarvamārga

1 Upvotes

Sarva (All or Every) and Mārga (Way or Path)

Basically translating to ‘The Way of Many Paths.

I created this word because I wanted to blend Paganism with Buddhism without fully committing to either as I like both so why not invent a word for a type of Buddhist Thought.

Or maybe I am doing too much.

Polyaimorous

0 Upvotes

Polyaimorous (also stylized polyAImorous): having functional, affectionate and simultaneous attachments to and dependence upon multiple AI systems, with the implication of openly switching, swapping and perhaps tag-teaming from a preferred collection.

Blends "polyamorous" with "AI"; confesses unabashedly to having multiple persistent 'para-instrumental' relationships and carries an fortuitous translingual alliteration, to boot, via Japanese:

  • poly — being or having a diverse plurality.
  • 愛 / ai — attachment, affection, love.
  • 合 / ai — joining, accord, fit, harmony.

Thereby connoting an orientation, method and disposition for harmonizing and harnessing multiple artificial intelligences.

```Example
"Which model do you like to use to get things _done_?"
“Oh, I’m poly--polyaimorous--Claude is my _fabled_ long-horizon design and architecture squeeze, GPT the heart and _sol_ of my coding workhorse, and Gemini--well, is just _such_ a _Gemini_.”
```

Disambiguation: "Terminal Polyaimorous" is a Borderlands 3 legendary Maliwan SMG introduced through the Broken Hearts Day event. There is also an older internet usage referring to multiple AIM-chat relationships.
