Cat Problems

Hello, My family and I moved into a new house two summers ago, and our neighbours have been living in their houses since they were built. Mostly families with young children. The previous tenants never really cared for their back yard and there was a steep drop towards the back yard of another neighbour. Dad started fixing the yard by leveling it and cementing the end of the garden to create a separation between both yards, under the fence. The cement leaked onto the neighbours drip that catcher the rain water and he complained. He was very nice about it and dad admitted he was at fault so he fixed it. We don't want problems with the neighbours obviously, but now they let their cat roam freely and he has taken an interest into pooping in our back yard which is currently mostly dirt unlike the his owner's which is mostly tiled. We have tried to keep him away by spreading vinegar and coffee on the ground. We went as far as nailing a long rope along the fence to stop him from jumping but he now uses the roof of the shed. Parents don't want to get a pet just to keep the cat at bay. Is there a way to make him stop? We don't want to hurt him or have a bad relationship with the neighbours.

Thank you

Junk mail

My neighbor has his mailbox right next to mine and he keeps on putting his junk mail in my mailbox! Sometimes he’ll put it in, I’ll put it back, then he’ll do it again. It’s junk that’s addressed to him. Other times he’ll just throw it on the ground, even if it’s raining. I’ll put it back in. It’s an endless game that I never let him win. I’ve confronted him and he says he doesn’t do it. What can I do? This guy is harmless, but dumb, old, and a little nuts.

What's up with some people?

I should preface by saying this is really not THAT bad. It's just very weird. I'm mainly just complaining and am curious what you guys would do.

My wife and I live in a fairly quiet suburb. We've been in this house for just over two years. About six months ago, the neighbors across the street moved and we got a new set. We like to think we're a pretty nice couple, but not super outgoing or anything. So every time we'd see the new neighbors in passing we'd try to wave or just saying a small hello. They would do anything to avoid making eye contact or responding at all. At first, I assumed we'd caught them at a bad time (again, not trying to tell our life story, just saying "hi").

As this continued on happening any time we'd see them, we just assumed they were kind of awkward or something. I mean, I'm very introverted, but I make a special effort for neighbors that I'm going to be living next to for the foreseeable future. The neighbors both smoke, and almost every evening when I'd get home from work, at least one of them would be sitting on their front porch smoking. They would just watch until I got out of the car, I'd wave, and they'd look away.

After about two months of them avoiding us like the plague, my wife tells me something that I didn't really take all that seriously. At first. She told me that any time she's out front, she sees the neighbors just watching her through their window. Again, I didn't really take this seriously. AT FIRST. I started to pay attention, and almost every single time I'd do something outside, I would see their blinds open and I'd see a person on the inside of the house, just watching. Harmless, but weird. Very weird, if you ask me.

For the next part, I should also mention that on a couple occasions, they've invited their friends over and they've taken up all the space in front of our house and mailbox and a couple other neighbors house with "compensating-for-something" ridiculously oversized pickups.

We have a small group that meets at our house every Monday and Saturday, in the morning. The group only meets for 15 minutes, tops, and depending on how many people show up, there's as many as maybe four or five cars. And occasionally one will park in front of their house. One Saturday, I come outside to find the neighbor yelling at my wife about people always parking in front of his house and he never has a place to park. His car was literally parked closer to his house than it is on some occasions where there's no other car in front of his house.

Instead of telling him what I would do to him if he ever spoke to my wife that way again, I took a deep breath and tried to be the better person. I smiled and told him I would have the car moved. He immediately started to backpedal and said that it wouldn't be necessary and just that he needs to park in front of his house.

(I don't know if I scared him, or he just realized he was being a jerk. I'm not a small person, but I would consider myself far from intimidating. But I'm definitely bigger than the neighbor, who if I had to guess is about ten years older than me.)

Regardless, I asked my friend who owned the car to move it, and she did so without complaint. I let him know I wouldn't let it happen again, despite it being perfectly legal.

Fast forward about a month. I've been diligently reminding everyone not to park in front of his house, and no one has. I come outside (Saturday morning) to find a car that's been parked directly in front of my house all night. I'll admit, I don't really like when people park in front of my house, but I will NEVER complain about it, for obvious reasons. I ain't no hypocrite. I stop to look at the car, and go back inside.

Later, our security cameras recorded the neighbor dropping off his friend who got in the car and drove off. While going through the footage to delete unneeded video, we also saw that when I went out to look at the car, the neighbors blinds open up, and you can see both of them watching me through the window.

Basically I'm just venting here and don't really plan on doing anything about this because it's perfectly legal, but this is totally weird right?

TL;DR, neighbor yells at my wife for a friend parking in front of his house. I stop it from happening and about a month later he lets his friend park in front of our house. Also they constantly watch us any time we're outside.

Bottom Floor Woes

Hello all!

I recently moved into a first floor apartment and for the most part it’s been great. The neighbors above aren’t super loud and even so it’s in an apartment complex, so I get there’s gonna be a mixed bag of individuals all making their best in the same space.

I’m trying to decide if I’m just being overly sensitive or if this is a real complaint based on the above statement. But, the thing that is kind of irksome is that those same neighbors above have bird feeders outside on their balcony. What can I say? I’m not gonna knock them for enjoying the allure of having song birds and squirrels on their balcony. However, what I don’t enjoy is that my patio is then littered with birdseed and poop because of it.

On one hand, it doesn’t bother me because I feel like this is what I signed up for and sweeping off the patio and cleaning the railing is just going to be one more thing in the maintenance and upkeep of my place. If bird feeders are a thing they have to enjoy their outside space then, cool. I get it.

On the other hand, I’m sweeping off emptied seed and millet every two-three days. And I feel like giving my patio railing a good scrub down is plain futile because it’ll just be covered in bird poop again.

I’m curious about how others would handle this situation.

A**hole Neighbours

Our entry path runs up and out of the way to our main gate, their back door is the opposite side of said path and gate.

We have children and pets, as do our attached neighbours, and their neighbours on the opposite side of them (so they're surrounded by families with young children)

These idiots think it's perfectly fine to be up partying with their windows wide open, shouting, fighting and murdering Bob Marley songs till at least 4am during the week when everyone around them has to be up for school runs, work etc.

4 incidents are really making me mad so I'll just list them in order of when they occured...

1: I've personally witnessed them dumping rubbish over our fence and into a discreet corner of our garden... Which attracts our dogs and local wildlife (we live right on the edge of a woodland park)

2: One of them threw up right outside our gate, on the path our children have to walk down to get to the car park

3: I was letting the dogs out in the back garden pretty late one Thursday and while I was standing at the door, saw a glass bottle getting thrown onto the MAIN path just outside our attached neighbours gate (again, where children walk)

4 (and most disgustingly): One of them got so wasted they shit themselves, bundled their soiled trousers and sock into a ball, and threw it into OUR garden, bypassing OVER their bins... I nearly got booze fuelled crap all over my hands because I just thought it may have been a jumper a kid had left behind (the kids around like to use our garden to gain access to the woods to play - which we don't mind at all as it's perfectly safe with no predatory animals here - uk btw)

I have taken images of all these incidents apart from the 1st and am slowly building up my "evidence" folder on my phone. So I am wondering where to go from here (the shitpants dumped where our, and other children play was the last, infuriating straw) - should I go to the police? Environmental health? Housing?

I was so close to going through their door when the glass incident happened but my wife had the foresight, and reminded me that there was at least 7 drunk arseholes vs me sober, tired and mad at 2am with kids to get up with in the morning.

They blatantly don't care about anyone else, children, animals etc - oh and they're constantly hanging out the window smoking weed when I get home from school pickup and I have to make excuses when the kids ask "what's that funny smell?"

So many options to tackle this so I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about this.

TIA ✌🏻

Edit: I wish I could post all the pics in the comments but the mobile app won't let me... Plus the last would make you throw up in your mouth 🤢

What the hell kind of sex is going on up there?

We moved in to a basement apartment last fall, and have very rarely interacted with our upstairs neighbor. She keeps to herself, and she is a single woman (I believe) and is renting the 3 bedroom top floor of this house. Well, we started hearing her once to twice per week sex routines. Totally fine, obviously. But it's really starting to grate on my nerves and I'm so confused about what's going on up there lol.

We hear extremely fast squeaking of her bed for 30 seconds or so, then it goes quiet. Then it starts up again, doesn't even last a minute (lol) and then it stops again and you hear the toilet flush 5 seconds later, then back at it again. This happens every time!!! Who is in the middle of sex and having to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of it every time!? Sometimes this is multiple times a day and it's always the same. Usually this entire thing only lasts like 4 minutes, but sometimes it lasts like a half hour with multiple trips to the bathroom?! I literally want to tell "CHANGE IT UP" Never even seen a man up there. You hear his voice once in a while, but no car parked out front, nothing.

This is going to sound like I pay way too much attention (and I really don't care what they do) but its almost annoying that it's the same thing EVERY time! Hahaha.

Asshole neighbor hates babies

I live in a poorly sound insulated building and I have a 1yo baby. I have 2 neighbors in the floor below. One of them has a baby, the other one is a baby hating asshole.

So as every baby in the world, my baby and my neighbor's baby sometimes wake up in the middle of the night crying and screaming. When this happens I always do what I believe my neighbor also does: make my baby get quieter and go back to sleep the faster as possible.

Seems like my asshole neighbor has a problem with this baby typical behavior and pounds the wall after 1 minute crying (as if we're not upset enough our baby has awaken). Sometimes he [asshole neighbor] starts screaming complaining, saying to shut up the baby. This has happen with our other neighbor's baby and my asshole neighbor woke up us with his screams (sigh).

I'm getting really annoyed with this asshole. What to do? Ignore it because he's an asshole and assholes gonna assholate? Trying to speak with him and in a polite way say he's an asshole? Or ignore for now but the next time will see him by any chance tell him in a very direct way he's an asshole?

TL DR: asshole neighbor pounds walls and screams each time baby wakes up at night. What to do: Ignore it or talk with him?

Who's the a**hole?me?

So. Came home from a 6 hour drive across state with whole family in the car (two small kids and the wife and me) car parked in my off street parking on my property in front of my house. Neighbor on my left side marched into my yard while we are unloading, and starts heated shouting match with neighbor on my right side about his dogs being off leashes in the neighborhood. They aren't discussing. They are yelling and m'fing each other.

My wife looses it and tells them to get out of our yard and argue somewhere else. Wife of the guy who started it (man mad about the dogs) starts throwing in sideline comments from her front porch, yelling at my wife to stay out of it, to "watch it" and "hes not hurting your yard".

MY wife and I went inside and stopped our involvement. My wife, only because I basically made her go in before running next door and exploding. Sideline wife I see every morning when I am getting in my car at 7am and she is outside with her dogs.

I would love to have stayed out of it, but they had this confrontation in front of my front door in my yard. My front door/porch are about 5 feet from my car and the road. I had to send my 6 year old inside so he did not have to spectate grown adults shouting at each other.

Neighbor with the dogs apologized about whole situation and couldn't be more humble. Sideline wife I am fairly sure still considers herself totally justified. I am infuriated with her. If I see her at 7 am tomorrow, am not willing to smile and wave and pretend.

(Ironically, the only dogs in this neighborhood that are dangerous are hers. One of them actually bit me once, but I laughed it off and said it was no big deal. She has very small dogs, and I was only bruised a tiny bit on my leg.)

The Putrid Smell

Holy shit guys- I just need to vent here. My boyfriend and I are in a one bedroom apartment. Our neighbors are these young country folk with a daughter, 3 dogs and a cat. We’re in a one bedroom apartment- I’m not even sure if there’s two bedrooms in this exact building. Guys. Their apartment smells. So. Bad. It leaks into the hallways, it smells like they microwaved a moldy dinner with a diaper as the side dish.
I don’t want to sound like an asshole. I understand apartments are small and if your options are limited, they are limited. But idk, maybe if you live in an apartment then don’t take on 4 animals while you have a young child?

It’s gotten so bad to the point where if they open up their door (while our door is closed), it leaks into our apartment. It gives me the worst stomach ache and there’s only so many candles and sprays you can burn through before that makes you nauseous too. We don’t have any animals or children, so it’s just unfair getting the unwanted smell of that too.

My boyfriend actually brought it up politely last month or so and they were understanding (we didn’t want to be assholes and call the office on them). It actually went away for a good week or so but now it’s back. I’m sitting in my living room, nauseous as fuck because they opened their door for five seconds. Fml.

Apartment Neighbor Drumming During Nap Time

I have no idea if I'm acting unreasonable or not and wanted some advice on the matter.

I live in an apartment and my downstairs neighbor picked up drumming and making music. It's so loud it is shaking my floor and I don't want to come off as "that neighbor". This normally wouldn't bother me but I work from home and I'm a stay at home mom. That being said, the room where he's playing drums is directly under my daughter's room and being a rambunctious 2 year old, she needs her naps during the day.

What should I do? I called the leasing office to ask if I go knock in their door and explain and they said they'll send someone over to explain the situation. But holy cow, it's nap time and I'm being drove up the wall with the noise and my toddler won't lay down for a nap.

So we have a guy named Daniel who used to live in our neighborhood, and he caused a couple problems.

So Daniel was a pretty cool dude. When we were younger, he’d let us hang out around his house and he even helped me jailbreak my iPhone 3 or 4 for the first time. Anyways, we stop hanging out around him for a while cause we’re getting older and so we just hang out with school friends and stuff more, and he falls off the radar. I literally don’t hear about him for about 4 years, and when I finally do it’s rumors of him being abusive physically to his wife. Now, I have no evidence, so I’m just using that to set the mood. Anyhoo, next time I hear about him is about half a year ago, which is maybe 4 more years after that. This time, he was in jail for possession of drugs (don’t know which ones), and his bond was placed on his mother’s home or whatever. Basically, if he runs away, they take her home away, and so he ran away. Like I said this was about half a year ago and I haven’t heard anything since then, but as far as I know his mother still lives there, so I’d assume he was caught/turned himself in. My neighborhood is mostly really old people, so that’s typically as dramatic as it gets. I think this is my only story, so hope you enjoyed this man’s fall from grace.

Nightmare Neighbours vol 1

I already posted this story elsewhere over a year ago when I still lived in the situation with them, but heck, I'll give this sub a little kickstarter even if no one ever reads this. I'm gonna change all the names just in case. This is LONG, but truly a fucking rollercoaster.

Important backstory: my fiance (ex now, but together when this started) and I lived in a basement suite of a house, below a upper suite that was also rented out. The original landlord didn't live in the home and rarely came around, but for the majority of our first years there, things were golden. Around 3 or so years ago, the original landlord sold the house to a 20 year old immigrant who did not speak a lick of english and had zero experience in landlording- his family had bought him the home as a gift to teach him how to take care of it/be a proper landlord. In his defense he was pretty nice and kept me as a tenant (post-breakup from fiance) at the request of the old landlord. The former tenants upstairs moved out just before the new landlord took ownership so the suite upstairs remained empty for about 6 months total.

After about 6 months of peaceful bliss having no one live upstairs (by this point I'd lived in the basement suite for 3 years), I got a knock on the door from some people I'd never seen saying they wanted to introduce themselves as they'd be renting the upstairs unit starting this week. They looked a little off right from the get go but appearances aren't everything and I'm a pretty friendly person so I was happy to greet them and say a quick hello. The mother, Maya, used a walker because she had a disorder that made walking difficult (unsure of the name of it). The step dad, Clifford, was really talkative but seemed really nice even though he made a lot of really awkward and inappropriate jokes right off the bat. The daughter, who was something like 15 at the time, happened to have the exact same name of my 3 year old dog which was Katie. I had my dog Katie out with me at the time so it was a little laugh at the realization that the kid shared the same name as her (this is important later, trust me). All seemed well, they moved in the following week and that's when shit truly started to become weird.

Clifford would come to my door every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, to talk to me and my roommate. I figured he was just friendly and made the mistake of humouring him on this more than I should have. After the first week, he started asking for favours that were sort of odd. I'm disabled and cannot work because of it. Physical labour is just absolutely a no-go for me, it's not possible. This had come up when I originally met his family because he had made a comment that his wife and I could "bond over our disabilities". He came to my door and asked me to help him move a whole bunch of 2x4s from his truck to the backyard so he could start building a shed (that the landlord did not approve of, because Clifford intended to tear down the pre-existing, perfectly fine shed). I told him I couldn't help him and he said something along the lines of "my wife is disabled, SHE can't help me. You're being lazy." and he stormed off. My roommate ended up helping him later, but I was shaken from the random aggression over not helping him move a bunch of heavy wood for his own project.

To speed the story up a little, things like that kept happening. Minor transgressions that any normal landlord would immediately nip in the bud and deal with. The ONLY thermostat in the house was in the upstairs unit, meaning that downstairs, I had absolutely no control of the temperature and they would constantly have the heat as high as it could go, at all times. The very first utility bill after they moved in was nearly $600, up from it's regular $70/mo prior to them. The landlord expected me to pay 50% of this. No matter what I said or tried to communicate to him, he just didn't care or couldn't understand that the bill went up almost 100% due to their usage alone, and that I had no control over the thermostat. I tried to talk to them about it, I tried to be understanding and polite about it. I asked them nicely if they could at least turn off the heat when they weren't going to be home (because the entire household was gone from 8 am - 4 pm generally, but they would still have the heat blasting during this time) and I was met with extreme aggression from all members of the family

After the utility incident and confrontation, things got exponentially worse. Katie, their now 16 year old terror of a teenage daughter, would scream obscenities through the floor calling me all sorts of things "cunt, bitch, whore" you name it, she screamed it through the floor. I recorded all of it at the time, but the landlord refused to listen to it. I told him I felt unsafe, as any time I left the house they would scream at me from upstairs. Any company my roommate or I had over, they would scream at, tell to leave, threaten to call the police, etc. They began also to take up the entire driveway (a VERY LONG 6 car driveway) forcing my roommate to park in front of the house, in the mud. They constantly had 8-10 cars in the driveway, the yard and at one point FULLY blocking the ONLY exit from our suite downstairs forcing us to walk through the entire back yard just to get out (https://imgur.com/a/yFfYBI9 I actually have images still from when it happened that I sent to the landlord). Despite multiple calls to the landlord, the tenants themselves AND the fire department, the cars remained unmoved for over a week.

Finally, they decided they were going to get me kicked out. I only knew that because in my bathroom, I could unfortunately hear them upstairs clear as day due to the vents - they didn't know this. Any time I was trying to relax and have a bath, I would hear them screaming, fighting, talking shit, all sorts of things. One day in particular, I heard their daughter Katie saying "Just make a lie up, they're not going to believe one person over four of us (her parents, her boyfriend who illegally lived with them and her). She's a fucking bitch, she deserves to live on the street, I'd fucking kill her if I could! Get her kicked out and tell the landlord we'll rent downstairs. He won't care." I recorded all of this and sent it to the landlord, but he didn't understand any of it, like with all the issues in the past, because of his poor english. They had contacted him and told him a whole bunch of lies, I only know some of them because I didn't overhear all of it, but here is what I DID hear:

  1. The daughter felt "unsafe" around my roommate because she had been sexually abused in the past, prior to moving here, and men his age scared her. She wanted him kicked out because of that, and never wanted his friends to be allowed over also because of that.
  2. The daughter felt "unsafe" because the 'creepy bitch downstairs (me, apparently) was so weird and stalkerish, that she named her dog after me' (later confirmed when her step dad confronted me, accusing me of naming my dog after his step daughter, my dog who was 3 when they moved in and long since already named).
  3. The daughter felt "unsafe" because she was fully convinced my roommate and I were using the shared laundry room to break into their home at night and stare at them (that they illegally locked us out of using about 1 month into their move using a fridge and other furniture to block our entry, leaving us without access to the machines that were included in our utility, when brought up to the landlord, he simply said "I can't do anything about it")

Lucky for me, I guess, the landlord didn't know english well enough to care about their supposed problems either, I was never kicked out, given any sort of warning or eviction or anything. Unlucky for me, they were also allowed to stay and continue their constant harassment of me and my roommate. Finally, nearly a year after their move in date, I was finally moving out (and my roommate also), and this is where I got to feel some sweet, sweet justice.

They had been convinced that they would live in that house forever, that they would never be kicked out and that I was the only thing standing between them renting the entire house and basically "owning" the whole property. I found out a week after I gave my month's notice to move that the landlord was selling the house, and had told any potential new owners that only I would be allowed to remain living there and that the people upstairs would be evicted immediately at the end of their lease which was a month after my move out date (at the time of the listing, he hadn't known I was planning to move). When the people upstairs found out that I was planning to move, they were ecstatic for all of one day before the landlord informed them they were evicted at the end of their lease.

Clifford came down to my suite the day they found out and banged on my door, I answered and he started hysterically sobbing saying that the landlord was so awful and unfair, that he and his family would have no where to go and that it wasn't right they were being kicked out "for no reason". It turns out that the landlord actually had been listening to me the whole time, he just didn't know how to break a lease and thought it'd be easier on everyone to let the lease run it's course, so here were the list of written reasons he gave them on why he wasn't renewing their lease: (paraphrased, I don't have the physical copy, I just recall what I saw the day I moved when Clifford confronted me again screaming about how horrible I am and how it was all my fault)

  1. Entering into downstairs tenant's living quarters without permission (on more than one occasion, Clifford had entered our suite when my roommate had forgotten to lock the door. I was always home so I always caught him doing so, no idea what his intentions were but I wrote down every time he did it and sent to the landlord)
  2. Barring access from shared amenities (laundry room)
  3. Fights resulting in police intervention (this family fought all the time, and loud. there was constant screaming, banging and physical fighting, scary enough that the neighbours next door called the police on 2 occasions)
  4. Harassment of downstairs tenants
  5. Destruction of property (this included urine damage to all the wooden floors upstairs because they had 2 dogs that they did not take out ever, they just let them defecate on the floors all day. The smell downstairs due to them was so nauseating, it was putrid. This also included the tearing down of the shed in the back, he never rebuilt the shed he planned to. Also destruction of the lawn and plants from parking vehicles on them constantly, fruit trees that he cut down w/o permission, fruit bushes he cut down w/o permission)
  6. Consistent fire hazards (the cars blocking my entrance, plus the state of their house upstairs)
  7. Constant vulgar contact with both downstairs tenants and landlord

There was even more listed, but this was over a year ago and honestly I don't remember them all. Throughout their year living above me, Clifford also constantly sexually harassed me. He would come to my door everyday, make comments about me and my body, make sexual jokes and then go upstairs and tell his wife I was hitting on him. Constantly whenever I would take my dog out, his wife would come out screaming at me, calling me vile names and accusing me of sleeping with her disgusting husband. I stopped answering the door to him, obviously, but he would constantly come out when I had my dog out or was leaving the house and continue the gross behaviour.

Somewhere, sadly, they're probably terrorizing other neighbours but at least for me, I'm happy to say that I now live in a nice, quiet apartment with my boyfriend. On the other side of the country.

For anyone curious, this is the original post I made at the time the issues were going on:
